We’re in our final stretch of summer before school starts, and have been keeping the kids busy exploring our own city! I wanted to round up my recent, mom-friendly outfits with practical flat shoes I’ve worn around town. These outfits feature two of my most-loved jeans on repeat – both denim styles come in multiple inseams and work great with flats (I’m 5 ft). And on the topic of flats, I’ve also been wearing these Amazon braided sandals a ton as my comfy “beat around” shoes and do several miles in them a day!
1. Abercrombie Ankle Jeans (5 inseams)
For a slimmer cut denim, I recently shared a review and comparison of these jeans which you can read here. These have been one of my most worn jeans all year since they’re slender without being too skinny, and the length works for me with almost any shoe type – sneakers, sandals, heels, booties, and flats!
I adore this Madewell vest above and am eying the black one for more year-round year! Unfortunately there’s very few sizes left in white, but I found similar white options at Mango – one in Teen sizing (petite friendly) and one in women’s.
See the jeans on me with white sneakers or with a blazer for smart casual wear.

This sweater jacket also deserves another mention – the 100% cotton quality is as good as vintage J.Crew, and the knit fabric weight is nice and substantial. While I wear the adorable striped one the most, the solid black is a great alternative to my AF boucle jacket for days when I want a similar look but a more casual and relaxed feel!
Also I’m so glad many of you were able to take advantage of the little kids’ Disney sweater dress restock! As you can tell from these pics, these are Nori’s daily uniform and bring her so much joy : ) The sweater dress portion is 100% cotton, and the tulle is also lined in cotton which sets this apart for comfort and quality, especially at this price point. I’ve washed them dozens of times inside-out in a large mesh laundry bag, and air dry. I took advantage of the sale and picked some up for friends’ gifts, too!
2. Madewell Wide-Leg Jean (4 inseams)
These jeans have made many appearances on here already, but I just love the wide crop silhouette and how they work with flat shoes! I’m we aring the “Cresslow” wash below in the cropped length, and have this full length version on my wishlist – it looks so good!
Petite sizing is running low in my exact pair, but the similar cropped J.Crew version of these jeans is well stocked in several cute washes and on sale.

$1 Sundays at the Children’s Museum
I also wanted to recap a few of our usual family-friendly activities around Boston. This post shares some of our favorite playgrounds with splash pads, and this post has some of our laid-back weekend itineraries with the kids.
Another favorite mini outing is heading to the Boston Children’s Museum, which has $1 admissions on Sundays (til further notice). You just need to go to the museum website and buy the tickets in advance for any Sunday afternoon time slot.
Martin’s Park has a good playground a short walk from the museum, and we like to pack a picnic lunch and sit on the waterfront “bleachers” overlooking the Boston Harbor, or go to BarTaco which is very allergy-friendly with a kids menu. If you eat dairy, the giant Hood milk bottle right in front of the Children’s Museum is a cute spot to grab hot dogs, grilled cheese and soft serve ice cream!
what if your a petite plus? 5 ft 160 lbs. hour class figure
Hi Joanne! I’m not sure if AF has your size but they’ve been one of the best I’ve found for 5 feet tall and have a fairly broad range of waist sizes, plus “curve” cut jeans for hourglass figures
I’ve learned so much from your blog. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you, I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed!
Jean, I doubt we will run into each other, but I am moving to your city today! Thanks for the preview of my new home and for helping me plan what to wear when I get there (LOL)!
Welcome to Boston and good luck with your move! I’m so glad you’ve found my posts to be a helpful intro 🙂
Hi Jean! Love these outfits! I’ve been thinking about snagging up a Naghedi bag. Do you prefer the mini over the petite size St Barths (as I seen the petite shown in other posts) or any pros/cons of the different sizes? Appreciate any feedback!
Hi Colleen! Definitely the mini is my most used Naghedi size, and it comes with a crossbody strap which I used recently for travel. The petite size that you’ve seen in a few posts was actually a gift for my daughter that we received and is more kid-sized.
Finally extra petite…length shorter than Petite. The length is so important to me in pants, Jean’s…are all too long. Been waiting for this…shorter length. extra petite! shortening takes the look away from the style.
Yes I’m very happy to see one brand now offering this and hope more will follow suit!
