5 Staple Pieces, 10+ Combos

how to style a striped sweater

Last month I shared a few closet staples and wanted to continue on that theme with more of my frequently-worn pieces! The items that made the cut for today’s post can all be mixed and matched across different seasons and occasions, simply through layering and changing up shoes and accessories. Scroll down for a few of the outfit combos with these 5 pieces!

5 Closet Staples

For fit reference, I’m about 5′ tall, 32 bust – 24 waist – 33 hips.

  • Black skinny jeans
  • Black turtleneck
    • Mine is H&M (old). Similar at J.Crew or Express with a lower mock-neck.
1. Classic Sweater + Jeans

See the first side-by-side photo above. Dress it up with heels, dress it down with sneakers or flats!

2. Winterize with Boots + a Coat

For cold weather, swap in ankle boots and layer on a long coat.

3. Chic layers

Bundling up further with a scarf in a monochromatic color scheme as the coat. Black pants + black booties also help elongate this chic layered look!

4. All Black + Pop of Color or Print

Add interest to a sleek all-black look with a striped sweater tied over your shoulders or waist, plus a pop of color with accessories.

Gucci mules 35.5 (my review; also love these affordable loafers in 5.5), EP bracelethoops, Celine bag

5. Trio of Neutrals

Each of these pieces and colors are so classic and versatile, you can’t go wrong with mix & matching them.

6. All Black + Long Coat

Black on black serves as a simple yet chic canvas to be easily dressed up or down. I swapped slingback pumps (polished) for combat boots (edgy) to go from work to weekend.

LOVE striped sweaters and T-shirts for the Spring, but I’ve heard some people say that petites shouldn’t wear horizontal stripes because they can make you look shorter . . . but it seems as though most of those I’ve seen do in fact have the stripes going across and not diagonally. What are your thoughts? I, too, am 5 ft.

Hi Barbara, I personally don’t follow that rule at all! I love horizontal stripes and you can always pair it with more elongating bottoms

I’ve been eyeing the Sezane sweater and was looking for a dupe on Amazon. This link deceptively shows a photo of you in the Sezane sweater! I haven’t purchased clothes on Amazon yet, and am wary of some unknown brands.

    Hi,
Just discovered your blog through this post since I’ve been consicering the Leontine jumper but unsure of the size: XXS or XS. All the posts I’ve read say go with my usual size but where I live the smallest size is almost always XS (and sometimes I go with S depending on fit) so I was very confused when I say these as an XXS! I’m the same height as you and about the same measurements so this really helped. Did you order just 1 size of the Leontine or try mutiple? If so, how were the differences between the fits?
    Thank you!

Hi Minna, so glad you’re here! I ordered xxs and xs because I wanted a slouchy, slightly oversized fit. Xxs is always my usual size and that fit best in this sweater. I am about 5 feet tall, 95 lbs if that helps!

    Hi Jean,

Thanks for the post. For the topshop jean, L30 looks cropped on you. For someone 5’2, 110 pound, go with W25 or W26? L30 or L32? Thank you!

Hi Zoe, I would personally prefer it to be a tad more cropped so I’d still suggest sticking with L30. For waist – i’m not sure it depends on what size you usually wear with denim. I wear 24 in most brands and I took a 25 here, but a 24 may have worked too.

Hi Jean. Thanks for your outfit ideas. I am 5’0” and the same size as you. Can you share photos of your closet and how you store all of your clothes, shoes, purses, and jackets?

Hi there! I’ve done two blog posts on wardrobe storage, which I’ll link here:

Clothing Storage & Organization // Shoes & Handbags

I wrote these posts while living in my old condo, but my shoes and purses are still in the same book case, my sweaters are folded in the same under bed drawers, and my clothes are all hung in a closet arranged by color to make getting dressed easier!

Hi Jean. I’m also interested in sizing for the Sézane sweater. How does it compare to the EP sweater? I love my new EP sweater and skirt set.

Hi Becky, so glad to hear you’re loving your EP set!! The EP set and the Sezane sweater are pretty different in style and fit. The Sezane sweater is wider, longer and more oversized in cut
