Confident in Classics

There are always new trends to dabble in each season, but sometimes you just want to reach for timeless pieces in classic color combinations! Banana Republic has been one of my go-to stores for such looks, so I’m excited to partner with them for their Fall “Turn It Up” campaign. Turning it up doesn’t have to mean loud and bold. It can mean letting confidence come through as your best accessory. For me, something as simple as figure-flattering clothes can make a huge difference in feeling confident, which is why I dedicate so much of this blog towards fit and proportions.

This Melton wool trench (currently on sale!) comes in both regular and petites, and is one of those pieces that just flatter the right places and won’t go out of style anytime soon. The collar has good structure for standing up to create a lengthened neckline, and the belt and double back vents create a slightly hourglass silhouette. A higher-waisted, belted short jacket is great for pairing with trousers or jeans to maintain a long and lean leg line.

Layered over this thicker ribbed sweater, the jacket is a pretty close fit on me and the sleeves also hit right at my wrists. I’m wearing an xxs regular in the sweater and it’s a casual fit, on the slimmer side without the neck being too tight (my usual struggle with turtlenecks!). Like in my last post, I’m wearing three neutral colors here so added a print or two like these leopard pumps to make the look more cohesive.

These navy sloan pants continue to be probably my most-worn pair! Please note I have machine washed and dried them (against the dry clean only instructions) for a slightly shrunken fit. Reading through the reviews, it seems that the fit might have changed once again, although I hope not as I loved the last updated one. If anyone has tried on a pair recently, please share your thoughts!

There is a big event going on right now with temporary markdowns on several fall pieces like blazers, jackets and sweaters. Here are a few versatile ones still available in petite sizing:

I laid out a new pair of just-ordered 00P Sloan ankle pants against my older 00P Sloan, and the new ones are indeed a different fit… wider through the leg and about an inch longer. Like you, I loved the previous update and am sad that the fit is different now! Not as great for petites, as it creates a less-slimming and less-flattering leg silhouette.

When unbelted & unbuckled-how do you deal with the straps? Let them hang or remove altogether?

Important Question: This was my first belted coat purchase & I love it in camel:) but when you choose to wear this coat (or any belted coat) unbuttoned & unbelted, do you let the straps fall or can you remove the belt altogether?

I bought a pair of Sloan fit khakis and they fit perfectly length-wise and through the legs, but the rear and upper thigh area are pretty roomy. :

I really enjoy the classic look in this post. I've found lately that I'm between a 0P and a 2P in the Banana Republic pants, but that a 0 Regular ends up fitting better at the top. I ordered a 0 Regular Short, so let's hope that does the trick!

I've also washed my Banana Republic Sloan pants and they come out fine. I only wish they offer the pants in even more neutral colors or patterns. Loving the trench…am now considering getting it.

I've been following your blog for a bit now and love all of your posts and recommendations. I don't wear petites but love your style. Ok the Sloane pants from Banana. Since June I've only been able to wear pants at work and the Sloan ones are the only ones that fit the best however when I went to buy new ones (I previously owned two pairs) they seemed a bit more snug than the ones I previously bought. I also noticed that out of the three new pairs I bought each fit a bit differently.

Also how have you dealt with the clasp enclosure? It tends to stick out and look weird under a more fitted shirt.

Also great belt…where did you get it from?

    Sorry for the long post.

    Thanks!!

    Best,
    Dina

I noticed the change in the Sloan fit too! A few years ago I bought several pairs for work–they fit perfectly. It seems like a totally different cut now, just with the same name!
