Martie Pants

jcrew martie petite pants valentino rockstud nude

I love a good versatile ankle pant, especially one that fits without any alterations! I also greatly appreciate the range of colors these come in, so work-appropriate doesn’t have to mean boring. J.Crew bottoms have always run big on me but this particular Martie style in 00p fits like a glove, better than any ankle pant I’ve tried off the rack. I would say this style definitely runs small compared to other American brands as well as J.Crew’s other bottoms. Looking at these photos I might prefer my ankle pants to be a tad longer, so FYI those who are even a little taller than me (I’m 5 feet tall, and these have a 24″ inseam) may want to try the regular sizing.

My WHBM convertible sweater from this blog post quickly became a go-to piece this winter, as you guys are probably tired of seeing on Snapchat by now. It’s hard to make a thick warm sweater feel sultry, but the off-shoulder style here does just that. I wore this same outfit with the cowl neck pulled up covering my shoulders and my nude pointed flats (which now come in real leather & more colors!) for business casual meetings, and swapped the shoes and yanked down one shoulder for a speedy transition into drinks with friends. Here’s another way I’ve styled these pants warmly with a cardigan and my big scarf as a wrap:

H&M; polka dot cardigan (old; similar in 2 colors), ASOS wrap, Baublebar necklace

Measurements of a 00p: 13″ across waist, 16.5″ across hips, 8.5″ rise, 24″ inseam, 5.25″ across ankle opening. 55% wool, 20% viscose, 19% poly, 6% elastane. Listed as dry clean, but I’m going to try washing gently at home and keeping out of the machine dryer for sure. Please note that as both my off-shoulder sweater and pants have wool content and are unlined, they may be itchy on sensitive skin – I also removed the inner sweater tags immediately.

Banana Republic slim ankle pants are still my favorite for the unbeatable comfy and stretchy 4-season fabric, but these Marties are great for adding a little wool texture and pretty color into your wardrobe. I just went to check out BR’s site and saw they are phasing out the pants I have, which led to a mini panic-attack and impulse to call local stores and order 5 backup pairs. After some digging I see they actually introduced “the new Sloanfit slim ankle pant,” described as Your favorite ankle pant in figure-sculpting stretch is now even better. We redesigned the pockets and waist for a smoother front, and shortened the inseam to hit at just the right spot.” Intriguing! I did find the inseam to be a little long on the original and the waist a little loose pre-shrinking, so am super curious about the new version. Going to wait for more colors to be introduced, but please share if you’ve tried them on!

Your blog has been so helpful especially since I started my first job post-college! I appreciate all the details (i.e. measurements, reviews, sale tips) that you provide for your readers! I am the same size as you and have always had a hard time finding clothes that fit especially pants.

What are your favorite pants for work?

I'm petite too (5'2'') and have tried BR, Jcrew, etc and the only ankle pant I have found that fits me well (inseam and length) is Old Navy actually! They are a lot cheaper ($35 vs about $90) and machine washable so they shrink a little bit too. Tons of colors, fun prints for spring – I have 9 pairs! (There's also almost always a promotion at Old Navy too so sometimes you can get them for $25!!) Here's the link:

My feet are 8'86", and are pretty wide at the toes cause my toes are more or less of the same length (not a triangle shape type of a foor). Now I understand why Jenn d'orsays from Sole Society in size 5 were unbearably snug for me while it was good for you. And with JCrew's Miri I could hardly even squeeze my feet in size 5 and they pinched badly as if I would need at least one full size bigger

I would appreciate it immensely if you shared your experience and sizing with Cole Haan, JCrew, Ann Taylor and Banana Republic.

In my country the smallest size I can get is still big for me. I have to buy my shoes online from the States ….and still can't figure the sizing(

Hello – there's lots of choices so it really is personal preference. There are TONS of fakes online which are hard to authenticate, so for true peace of mind I'd suggest buying direct at the Hermes store. There they can tell you about all the options and colors that they currently have in stock. I have several widths and wear them all fairly regularly, so it depends on if you want a wider statement belt or a slimmer more discreet one. The length isn't as important because they shorten it for free, at least they used to when I bought this.

My feet are different in length – one is about 8.5" and the other is about 8.75." Foot width matters too for fit. Let me know if you have sizing questions based on that about shoes in any specific brand!

I think it really depends on personal preference, since stores sell pants intended to hit at a variety of lengths (above ankle, ankle, below ankle, etc). My personal favorite is right below the ankle before the foot curves, however sometimes I like a little higher to show off ankle-strap shoes.

That's probably why I got a pair of the Sloan ankle pants on sale a couple of weeks ago for $16.60! I was dumbfounded but snapped them up because you raved about them so much. I got the regular sizing so had to have them shortened a little bit, but they did it for free! I've already worn them, and I do love them, although it's hard to get used to not having pockets in the front.

Oh my gosh, how did I JUST discover your blog?? I love how detailed you are about the sizing–it's super helpful to me since I'm barely over 5'0". I really like those pants and just might have to pop in to J. Crew to try them on for myself. Ankle pants that fit off the rack? What is this dream?

Just purchased the new Sloan pants from BR and I would say their description is accurate. I definitely notice the shorter inseam and more snug fit around the waist (I had my old sloans taken in a little at the waist and these fit better). However it seems that the pant leg has been narrowed as well. I have very skinny calves so dress pants are almost never tight on me, but these fit fairly snugly even below the knee. Also it seems that the different colors vary a bit in terms of fit. I bought the gray and they fit great, but I tried on black and red in the same size (0p) and the fit seemed different (more fabric around the waist but tighter in the leg). The sales associate told me it's normal for the pants to vary slightly from color to color so I would definitely recommend trying in store if possible. I'm very happy with the ones I picked up!

I tried on the new sloans at BR the other day and I like them better than the old ones. They are slimmer at the waist/hips (fit better on me but not my wide-hipped friend) and about an inch shorter. I used to get the regular sizes instead of the petite sizes so that I could shrink them in the wash and they would be a regular pant length, but now that they are shorter, I can wear the regular pant length without shrinking them. (: They changed the front pockets to be a little below the waistband instead of right under it and has two pockets instead of one. The green and khaki colored ones out right now are a different material that I personally don't like. They look and feel less polished.

Hi Jean, I see you wear Hermes belt a lot with your outfits. Never purchased anything from Hermes before. How do I order the classic H buckle belt? I'm a true size 25 jeans (AG, jbrand, BR 0P). What size belt should I get (60,65, 70, 75)? And what diameter/width (32mm)? TIA!

    Hi Jean!

I was wondering if you had any advice/suggestions for a petite to regular size conversion. The 2P martie fits perfectly on me, but I wanted to get another pair that would be longer. Based on the Jcrew size chart it seems like the regular 0 is the most similar fit to the 2P. Thanks!
