As we enter coat season, I wanted to share a few different ways I style and tie the belts on both my trench coats and wool coats! In addition to being a stylish finishing touch to an outfit, these tying methods are practical for keeping your sash belt from falling off, and also help create some waist definition when wearing your coats open. I’ve included photos of the completed knots below, but I’d recommend referring to my video tutorial over on Instagram!

1. Back Tie: the Back Knot
When wearing my coats open, I love securing the belt in the back using this clean and simple knot. It’s also great for cinching some of the material on the backside to create a little shape, as I shared in this before and after post. I’ve trained myself to do this tie behind my back, but if you’re just learning this, you can tie it while your coat is hanging up on a hanger or over the back of your chair, before putting on the coat.
2. Back Tie: the Side Knots
This is the easiest and most fail-proof option that anyone can do! I love this if I am wearing my coat open and want to quickly secure the sash belt so it doesn’t fall off or get lost.
3. Front Tie: the Hand Knot
A nice and clean knot for when I don’t want the feminine feel of a bow or a half loop tie. I shared this one last year and use it regularly! Please refer to this post for a step-by-step and video tutorial.
Great tips! The double wrap for the sash belt is my favorite. It really elevates the whole look and makes the coat fit perfectly.”
Hi Jean!
I’ve been using the front knot you showed us last year on my EP coat and love it. I am going to try the two side knots on some other wool and trench coats. I love that they wouldn’t untie if you sat down! Thanks so much, looking great as usual!!
Thank you April, always appreciate you kind notes!
