As some of you know I used to heavily favor skirts, but have enjoyed experimenting more and more with pants in various silhouettes lately! One of my all time favorite cuts that I’ve mentioned several times is still the Madison pant at Ann Taylor which has a classic high rise, gently flaring trouser leg, and an inseam that works on me with my standard high heels. For something a little different (and that’s slightly shorter in length, which works with my lower heels), I recently discovered these very flattering sailor flare trousers for a twist on traditional suiting.
Sailor Flare Trousers
You can’t tell in photos, but these are made of a stretchy medium weight knit twill that’s very comfortable but still looks professional. The stretch material hugs the curves (the rear view gets a thumbs up too – see photo at bottom) yet are not too fitted on me. I also love how these are styled with black booties in the stock image! Edit regarding color: These photos were taken in overcast conditions, and I would say the true color falls in between the online stock photos and in my photos.
The waist sizing on both the Madison and Sailor style pants are TTS for Ann Taylor, so if you typically need to alter the waist of bottoms from the brand, then that may still apply here. Due to the stretch of the sailor trousers, though, I found them to fit a tad better than typical AT pants. Measurements of size 00 petite: 12.75″ across the waist, 9″ rise, 28.5″ inseam.
Azra suede pumps
I’m thrilled to share these pumps were just fully restocked, in both black and a new taupe color! I originally got these last year and they are easily my go-to everyday black pumps. The sculpted, straight across front and deep side V cut are flattering on the legs, and help elevate an everyday shoe with a slightly more modern cut. Fit is TTS – I took my usual size 5 for Ann Taylor pumps.
Hutton Blazer in Stretch Twill
I wanted to point out this blazer as it’s actually the exact same material as the bottoms and can work together as a petite pant suit. It’s not marketed as coordinates, though, and the buttons are in a different style (tortoise on the blazer versus black with gold edges on the pants). This jacket has stretch and fits me fairly slim-fit throughout the shoulder and sleeves, but the torso has a few inches of room at my waist. One quick fix that my tailor used to do for single-button blazers is shift the button over 1,” rather than having to open up the lining to take in the torso along the back darts or two sides. Measurements of size 00 petite: 14″ across the shoulders, 15″ across the waist, 22.5″ sleeve length, 24″ length. Both the jacket and pants are listed as machine washable!
If you missed my recent AT try-ons post, several of the sale finds I shared have sizes that popped back in stock. Both pieces below are now stocked in xxs / 00 petite again and on sale with code MYSTERY.
Thank you to Ann Taylor for partnering on this post.
Such a great suit look! You look so good! Love the dark olive color.

Hi Jean
Your purse is beautiful. What is the brand and details? Also, could you do a post about your purse collection and what designers/styles you would recommend for someone just starting a luxury collection? What purses to wear for work/date night/casual/for travel/everyday, etc. Love your posts, especially all the details you include. Thank you!
Thank you! This one is an Hermes kelly size 28 and definitely an “investment piece.” For very first luxury pieces it all depends on what you would wear the most with your everyday outfits and lifestyle. For me it’d be a Chanel classic flap or YSL wallet on chain if we’re speaking more elevated bags, or the Goyard St Louis tote if we’re including more casual bags (that one is probably my most used accessory, ever!).
Hi Jean!
Yet another amazing outfit. Thanks for giving us petites daily inspiration. I never knew I could find and create so many outfits that actually fit me until I found your blog. Been a big fan before, during and after Nori – your family really is the cutest. Thank you for sharing your world with us.
Now, is the black low-key turtle neck a body suit or just a regular tucked in turtle neck? I’ve been trying to find more tops to go with my pants/skirts that aren’t too heavy but not so thin it’s see-through. Thanks in advance!
Hi Hillary, thank you for your kind message! The black top is just a tucked in turtleneck but I am continuously on the search for a good black turtleneck bodysuit! I think such a bodysuit is a key wardrobe staple, but it’s hard to find the right fit since torso lengths are not one length fits all.
I am loving this look! Boss babe glam and you are totally rocking it!

You’re always sooo chic and classy, Jean <3 π In love with this look, especially the shoes!

I just received these pants and they are stunning. I am exchanging for the next size up as the 00P is very flattering but maybe a tad too fitted for the corporate world on me. For reference I am 5β3 107lbs with thicker thighs. I may take to tailor and drop the hem a little bit as they do run shorter with 3 inch heels as Jean described. I wear a 00P in the Madison and found these to be smaller in the waist and more fitted. The color is a dark olive. Order them you wonβt regret it!
Aren’t they amazing? So happy to hear your review as well and thank you for sharing the tidbit about the fit relative to the Madison and the length info. I did see someone in the online reviews mentioning they were going to get the hem dropped too – a great tailor service that is a little lesser known!
I’d love to see how more of these look with shoes you can walk 2 mi to/from the train plus more all around a sprawling office campus for 10+ hours. Beautiful posts, as always!
Hi Kristen! To be honest I’ve never been in a situation where I would need to walk nearly that much in professional wear haha. Flats would obviously be key and I think either cropped wide leg or slim leg ankle cut pants would work best with flat shoes or boots (not longer boot cut pants like these!).
The pants and jacket are elegant, wearable, affordable and great color. Love this look. And congratulations on your new bag !
Thank you! I’m happy you love the look!
What a beautiful suit!
What is the black shirt you are wearing UNDER the green twill blazer? Looking for tight basics to wear under blazers for work. Thanks!
Hi Amy! It’s an old turtleneck from Ann Taylor. They don’t have anything similar available at the moment but I own one that is similar from H&M.
Hi Jean, love your sunglasses (as well as your entire blog!). Can I ask which sunglasses these are? Thanks so much! Your style is so classic and helpful for petites like myself.
Hi Sophie, thank you! They are Celine Audrey. they also make a baby audrey style that fits better on a smaller face but I loved the oversized look of these.
Thank you!
Obsessed with this green suit!

Wow! You look gorgeous! Love the suit and the buttons on the pants!
Also, just wanted to say, thank you for your blog! You didn’t have to, but it means a lot to me that there are women willing to talk about postpartum depression and pregnancy. So thank you! I think you don’t just look beautiful, but YOU are also beautiful. π
Thank you for taking the time to share your encouraging words! Much love to you xx
Okay, never mind, I slowed down and read through your post and read that you mentioned the color looks different in person. Delete my previous comments. Sorry!
You look so wonderful elegant in this suit!

That is so chic on you! What color are your trousers? The green Sailor Flare trousers in Lustrous Olive look very olive-y but yours looks like…Panton’s Eden (I googled common shades of green to get something descriptive) on my monitors at least.
Also, what kind of blouse/sweater do you have on or is it a shell?
Finally, did you alter the pockets in the back, like cut them out? Yours are subtle though it could b the angle. I got the Madison’s in the light grey (it’s like hatched black but from afar it’s a grey) and the pockets are extremely visible through the fabric and it makes me a bit self-conscious because it’s like a VPL. That’s one critique of the pants.
Thanks for a great post π
Hi Christina, I’m questioning my description of the color now! I keep looking at it in different lights, and in direct sunlight it does look more olive. I did not edit mine to look differently, but it was overcast out and lighting conditions will always make a difference. It is more olive than Panton’s Eden.
The shirt underneath is an old Ann Taylor turtleneck tee. Also I did not alter the pockets. The back pocket lining is very thin and doesn’t show through the outer fabric, at least in my opinion!
So visually stunning. Cant believe they arent marketing it as suiting. The color reminds me of this linen version I saw recently: https://www.etsy.com/listing/538525456/linen-suit-green-linen-pants-linen?ref=shop_home_active_20&frs=1&crt=1
That petite suit: the color, the flaterring lines… looks gorgeous on you!
Hi
I am interested in this petite suit as its very hard to find a good fit for petite women.
Can you advise where or which website to order from
