If you’re still on the lookout for a party outfit that won’t break the bank, check my recent try-on post for a few restocks, including this popular navy kimono dress that’s now fully available in petites! Express has been hitting all the holiday texture notes with velvet, satin, and faux fur so I’ve been waiting for an elegant sequin piece to come into the mix.
This one is a simple but classic sequin slip dress with adjustable shoulder straps and a figure grazing silhouette. It’s currently 50% off making it a very good price for a sequin dress, and will arrive in time for New Year’s Eve festivities (so hard to believe 2020 is around the corner)! To winterize this little piece, I added tights, a faux fur jacket as a middle insulating layer, and topped it off with a jewel toned boucle coat.
I also tried on the second color in this dress, which is actually quite accurately described as a garnet red. Fit-wise, note this is a slip style dress (no zipper closure) and is straighter cut throughout the torso and not fitted at the waist (see upper right photo for how this dress falls on me with no belt). If you’d like to add more waist definition, one of my go-to tricks around the holidays is a yard of velvet sash ribbon from the fabric or craft store as a makeshift belt!
Another party piece I tried on and would recommend is the sexy yet elegant Ruched mesh sheath dress. This one is a little hard to describe with a ruched stretch mesh overlay that sit over a stretchy black under layer. I personally thought it looked best with the shoulder straps sitting in a deep V shape on top of the shoulders (versus fully off the shoulder). The fabrics on this dress are very light in weight (not a thick bandage style dress) and it’s comfortable and not restricting due to both layers having a lot of stretch. I tried on both the xxs regular and petite, and much preferred the length of the regular sizing (hits at the bottom of my kneecap) to help balance out the fitted silhouette.
Thank you to Express for partnering on this post.
Love all the holiday inspo! Sticking to my fashion challenge, I’m updating an old jewel tone maxi dress by layering a thrifted sheer black long sleeve mesh top underneath that I may bedazzle if I have time. Probably will wear same dress to all events, like tiffany haddish. If I do my hair and throw on some makeup can I get away with tevas? Hmm.
Jean. You are as glamorous as a movie star! LOVE the sequin dress. The red one looks fabulous on your skin. And I’m amazed you didn’t have to shorten it at all. It hits the knee perfectly. Love, Val
Hope you’re having the most wonderful holiday season, dear Val! xx
Ahh that sequined dress is gorgeous <3 🙂 I love the coat that you paired it with!
