Last Halloween Nori was two months old, so of course I was more excited than she was to do our first costumes as a family of three! I DIY’d our sushi family Halloween costumes last minute and it could not have been easier. Per popular request I’m sharing some material sources, printouts and instructions for each of our outfits. The salmon nigiri pillow is easy to adapt in size and make bigger for either an older little one or even for yourself!
PS – For Fixer Upper fans, here’s another easy DIY costume idea we did in years past!
1. Nigiri Sushi Costume
Materials
- All white outfit. For infants, we used this stretchy white swaddle and knit cap
- Wide elastic black belt or wide stripe of black fabric as the “seaweed” band
- Orange t-shirt
- White or lighter colored felt
- Small rectangular pillow or folded up towel to wrap the orange t-shirt around
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Safety pins or velcro
How To
- Wrap the orange shirt around the folded towel or small pillow, and safety pin the back side of the shirt to ensure it stays securely around the towel. The wrapped pillow should be smaller than your baby and lightweight enough to attach to your little one’s belly or back.
- Cut out strips of lighter colored felt and glue them onto the top of the t-shirt like marbling on salmon nigiri.
- Put on the white outfit. For infants: Swaddle baby cozily and put on a white cap.
- Place the wrapped pillow on your child’s belly or back (for toddlers and older kids) and secure it in place with the elastic belt or black fabric / sash. If the belt is too big, secure it tighter using a strip of velcro or large safety pins.
2. Soy Sauce costume
Materials
- Black skirted apron (this one is very similar to the one I wore)
- Soy Sauce Logos (click for a printable PDF Nick made)
- Black felt or construction paper to mount the logos on
- Plain black outfit to wear underneath
- Cereal box or cardstock to create a “crown”
- Red felt or construction paper to cover the crown
- Staples or hot glue gun
- Safety pins
How To – Apron
- Print out the soy sauce logos PDF linked above in landscape orientation, and cut them out.
- Glue the printouts onto black felt to make it sturdier, then safety pin the felt pieces onto your apron. I cut my black felt pieces to be larger than the printouts in order to leave room to pin.
How To – Hat
- Unfold the cereal box and cut two strips along the length of the box. Either hot glue or staple the ends together to make a crown that fits comfortably on top of your head.
- Wrap red felt or construction paper around the cardboard crown and either hot glue or staple to secure it.
- Lastly, if you’d like to add the little tabs on each side, you can cut out two triangles from the red felt, and hot glue one to each side of your cardboard crown.
3. Sushi Chef costume
Materials
- Sushi chef top
- Black pants + sneakers
- Plain black chef’s cap
How To
There really isn’t any DIY for this costume, though instead of a chef’s cap you could certainly make a plain black headband to wear using similar steps as the soy sauce cap above and simply cover it in black felt. Last year we realized after the fact that Nick’s headband says “Ninja”… oops!
We’re in need of inspo for this year, so please share some of your favorite family Halloween costumes!
PS – Here’s a Pinterest-friendly image if you want to save this idea!
I love your cute and creative idea! Thank you kindly for sharing step by step instructions! You guys look great in these pics! You totally inspired me to do a soup dumpling family costume with my newborn and husband! 🙂 I dressed up as vinegar but pretty much copied your soy sauce idea verbatim, so thank you!!
Do you have the soy sauce in an svg file?

So so cute! It looks better than the costumes you buy at the store! I like Peter, Wendy, and Tinkerbell for this year. Or if you want to keep the food going Burger King, Wendy’s, and a little Grimace.
This is one of the most adorable and creative family costumes I’ve seen! Your family is adorable as always!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! So kind of you to share and to include the pdf. I actually went to the craft store earlier this week and bought supplies to make these costumes after being inspired by your Instagram post! (We have a 6 mo old). How I was planning to recreate it was definitely more complicated in lots of ways, so thanks for the guidance! I am going to adjust because your way is so much better 🙂 Love your blog. Have a Happy Halloween!
Okay, this is just adorable! Such a fun idea for a family with a baby. While the child is a bit young for trick-or-treating, this would be great for a party. Thanks for sharing:)
