On Nick: Banana Republic cardigan S c/o on sale!, traveler pants 31×30, Chippewa boots
Over the past few years, it’s been a special tradition for Nick and I to travel somewhere festive in December. Nothing rivals the magic of London during Christmas – we were so smitten that we went twice! Although we’d love to take Nori someday, we didn’t quite have the energy this month to tackle an international trip with a baby. We opted for a weekend road trip instead to Hudson, NY, and would love recommendations for any New England towns that are especially charming during the holidays!
Hudson was a quiet, slow-paced town (that’s partly gentrified), but the main street was lined with boutiques in festive decor. There’s a motorcycle shop that serves coffee & gourmet waffles inside, a tea library and chocolate shop, a specialty cheese store, and an antiques store with a bar and Malaysian food! We don’t get out much as new parents, so I asked my parents to help babysit while I treated Nick to a leisurely afternoon of window shopping and munching along Warren Street.
Banana Republic is having 50% off your purchase right now, except for new arrivals like my sweater which are 20% off. If you’re looking for skinny jeans that are cropped enough to wear with ankle booties, these are a classic option in medium weight dark denim. They come in petite, regular, and tall, and I love that the length is more cropped than most ankle jeans and hits right above my booties. The inseam on size 24P is 25.5″ and I’m about 5 feet tall, for reference. My sweater comes in 4 colors and is in regular sizing, but it’s a shrunken-fit style that’s also very petite-friendly! It’s medium-to-thicker weight, and the cable knit has a smooth, tightly woven finish to it that doesn’t seem prone to snags or pilling.
For men’s staples, be sure to check out Nick’s gift guide for fit photos of both a camel coat and a more casual wool bomber jacket from Banana Republic that are both included in this sale!
Thank you to Banana Republic for partnering on this post.
Hi Jean, the “BANANA REPUBLIC ANKLE JEANS” link doesn’t work. If needed I can send you a screenshot showing which link. Thx.
Hi Jean, the Boston Globe just did an article on Dec 4th: “Five festive New England towns to get you in the holiday spirit”. The one in NH sounds the cutest with a Christmas Inn! Wishing you and your family a happy holidays!
Love this sweater! I got the cream and the navy. Thanks!
As for cute New England towns to visit, come to Newburyport! About an hour (or so) from Boston, right where the Merrimac River meets the Atlantic. I can show you around – we have a lot of cute resale and boutiques.
Great post, Jean! Loved your recommendations and replies to questions. Keep up the good work!
Love this couple look <3 🙂 You two are always the sweetest!

Love! Ordered jeans & sweater today!
Hi Sara, I hope you love them! xx
Hi Jean! Would you recommend these jeans over your Everlane ones or H&M petite jeans? The BR ones seem a bit roomy in the leg and the back pocket placement seems low. Is that accurate? I’m looking for a true high waist skinny/very skinny fit jean and am struggling to pull the trigger, although maybe I’ll have to order from several places and return. Maybe you’ll do a “comparison” post for reasonably priced jeans in the future? 🙂
Hi there – tough call, as they are pretty different in my opinion and it depends on where you want the length to hit unless you plan on hemming them. The BR ones I’m wearing here are mid rise and slim leg versus very skinny, and more cropped. I haven’t tried H&M jeans recently, but the ones I have from last year were more of a thinner stretchier material (but material always differs from style to style) and length came below my ankles. The Everlane mid rise ones are higher in rise than the BR pair I’m wearing here (also labeled mid rise) and the length is longer, again to below my ankle. If you want a true high waist jean that’s also very skinny, J.Brand is still my favorite – I know they’re pricey and you said reasonably priced, but I have just a few pairs that I wear on heavy rotation which helps with the cost.
I will definitely try J. Brand when I get a little less porky around the middle :)(which is why I’m looking for reasonably priced options right now). I used to wear AGs and loved them. Thanks for the detailed feedback Jean!
Looks like these jeans are sold out in Petite in every size except 28. Bummer! As a Petite 25 I have occasionally had luck with hemming Regular size 24 but I’m not sure about Banana Republic. Any thoughts or info on restocking?
Hi Casey – I just looked this morning and a couple more sizes were back in stock, so I’d check in the mornings if you’re interested! If you’re a regular 24 in jeans I would stick to the same … I take the same size in regular and petites when it comes to denim.
Thank you! I went to check this morning and they don’t have any left in petites and have pulled it from the petite denim listings. It’s only available in tall and regular now. I already ordered in regular 24 and 25 and hope one will work for me (I am also just a few months postpartum so things are a little bit in flux in the size department). I will keep checking back, as I know this time of year is a tricky one!
Yes it’s hard to get away when you have a kid so thank goodness for grandparents, right?! I have never been to Hudson but sounds like a nice and beautiful place. I am so glad you and Nick were able to get out and enjoy some time together. Cute winter white sweater and BR definitely makes the best ones!
