Feminine Details // Scallop Cardigan + Blush Shift Dress

petite fashion blog professional work wear ideas

Talbots scallop cardigan sz petite P on sale! (3 colors) c/o, LOFT shift dress, Ann Taylor necklace + pumps (updated version), KJP cuff bracelet, Cuyana tassel bag c/o (my review)

This simple look might be one of my favorite pairings to date – it combines so many pretty little details in one comfortable outfit! For this in-between-size stage of pregnancy (during which it just looks like I over-indulged at lunch), I’ve been digging through my closet for looser shift and swing dresses. I didn’t find too many, as I apparently loved everything fitted / high waisted, but this forgiving old shift dress was a happy rediscovery!

Talbots is currently running a rare 25% off site-wide, with no code needed (UPDATE: new customers can try code NEW25 to get free shipping on top of that!). This scalloped cardigan caught my eye in a catalogue and it did not disappoint in-person! It’s an elegant, classic piece that can be styled like a sweater jacket. It’s lighter in weight but the knit is tightly woven, and does not feel like the type of fabric that would easily snag or pill. It’s also machine washable, although I’d do so only on the gentle cycle and in a large mesh bag (this one’s my favorite for delicates – good size and quality) and skip the machine dryer.

Talbots apparel sizing sadly only starts at 0-2p / Petite P so extra petite ladies will likely need alterations. However I have had luck with some casual-fit knits, like with this sweater! Another work piece that I have tried on and would recommend is their Pique Aberdeen blazer in ivory (use code HURRY for extra 25% off through tonight). A 0 petite will be loose on someone my size (so I recommend sticking with your true size) but the quality, weight and detailing on it are very nice.

I also always recommend checking out their sale shoes! Online sizing starts at sz 5, and they always have a host of fun colors and prints (pom-pom block heels, anyone?) in styles with lower heel heights.

I’ve been a loyal watcher for yeeeears (love you) but this is my first comment. You mentioned the Pique Aberdeen blazer and at first it didn’t look like much on the website at Talbots. I was in the shop this weekend and checked it out on your suggestion. I instantly fell in love with it (the buttons!!). I wore it to a women’s networking event tonight and got tons of compliments. Thanks so much!

Aw yay!! Thank you for taking the time to leave a first comment : ) I’ve learned over the years that Talbots has some select great pieces, but their catalogue shots don’t often do them justice. I’m sure you looked incredibly sharp at your networking event!

Hi Jean, do you mind sharing what are the measurements for armhole and shoulder width of the scallop cardigan that you got?

    Posted 3.4.18 Reply
    • Jean | Extra Petite wrote:

Hi there – the petite P measures 12.25″ across the shoulders (measured it from the back side) and it was a little tough to get an accurate armhole measurement, but I got approximately 16.5″ around. The material is knit and stretchy. Hope that helps!

    Jean,
Thank you for your posts, as always you look great. I’m in desperate need for a one piece swimsuit as my spring vacation is coming up. I would be really grateful if you could suggest a modest one piece!

Hi there – I haven’t tried on swimsuits in a very long time, but I know Modcloth and Boden tend to have colorful and cute one pieces that are also more modestly cut in the leg and rear end! (I am unsure about Boden sizing though) I also love LOFT swimsuits but they don’t have a huge selection.

Jean – Thanks for the nudge to check out Talbots! I just picked up their Capri Sandals in Sand, which are a huge upgrade from the plastic sandals I lived in last spring/summer/fall. Just a tip, I used NEW25 promo code for 25% off + free shipping!

Thank you for all of your wonderful suggestions and inspiration! I’d love to see more work wear, including some higher end suiting options. I’d like to invest in some very nice suits and would be really interested to see your top picks.

Theory was my absolutely favorite when I worked in a more business formal environment. They are pricier but make gorgeous lightweight wool stretch suiting in minimalist cuts that won’t go out of style. I will be doing a post with them soon so stay tuned!

Simple and feminine look. Love the scalloped cardigan, it adds such a fun element to your entire outfit. I have the exact opposite of your wardrobe. I have so many swing/shift dresses and probably only have a pair or two of tighter clothing – a shirt or top but not even dresses. Hmmm….

    Jean,
I’ve contemplated leaving a post for quite some time, and finally decided to do so. I just wanted to thank you for your inspiration. I am a busy professional working (petite) mom, and for several years, fell into a fashion ‘funk’. Since I’ve been following your posts, I have now found motivation is taking care of myself again and honestly feel more put-together now and fashion forward–moreso than I even did in my 20’s. Thank you for sharing your style and grace. I now have a closet that I am proud of, and a new outlook on myself.
