Accessories of Fall: Neutral ankle boots + plaid scarf

what to wear in the fall_casual style 2017

Sole Society ankle boots c/o sz 5, plaid blanket scarf c/o (also sold here), wool hat c/o (has an olive tint to it), Caslon tunic top xxs petite (also styled here), Topshop jeans (Jamie ankle style) sz 25 x 30

I’m jumping the gun a bit with these cool-weather pieces, but once Fall rolls around this will my weekend formula. Wrap me up in a slouchy tunic and a soft blanket scarf, and suddenly chillier temperatures seem a lot more tolerable!

Some of you might remember my Sole Society “River” boots from last year (see how I styled them here and here) – I’m happy to report that they’re back, in a whole array of neutral colors! These are a classic bootie with a lower, 2″ stacked heel and flattering almond-shaped toe (front toe area runs on the narrow side, so go half size up if you’d like more room there). They look adorable with ankle-length or cuffed-up jeans, and the top opening doesn’t gap too much at my ankles like some other booties do.

These booties were comfortable out of the box with no breaking-in needed for me. There’s a functional zipper along the inners for easy on & off, and a decorative zipper along the back. Mine are the “taupe” color, and I’d also recommend the “mushroom” which actually looks more similar in-person than the stock photos make it seem. The taupe has a warmer brown tint, whereas the mushroom is just a little cooler with some gray in it. I didn’t keep the latter color, but wanted to show it below for comparison’s sake!

If you’re looking for a true camel-colored bootie, I also tried on the Vixen bootie in New Camel (with a walkable, 1.75″ stacked heel) and would recommend it! Fit felt true to size – a size 5 was a good fit on me with thin footie socks.

Sole Society also makes a few of my favorite scarves from years past – they’re cozy and rectangular-shaped instead of square, so are easier to manage and style with less bulk! This windowpane one is a mix of warm tan and taupe, with hints of burgundy and navy that will go nicely with much of my existing wardrobe.

I’m an older petite gal, but love your classic style. I ordered and just rec’d the Sole Society booties featured in your post. 1/2 sized up as recommended and they fit perfectly! Absolutely love them. Also love scarves you feature, but find the sizes often drown me. Depending on the scarf, I’ve taken to cutting them in half lengthwise, stitching them, then fringing the ends for less bulk. Works for me!

Thank you for the reviews. I ordered these and can’t wait to try them on. I went up half a size up since you mentioned is a bit narrow.

    Hi Jean!
I love your blog and your sense of style. I am also 5 ft. tall but a bit curvier than you. My problem is with jeans. I love skinny jeans but by the time I hem them they have lost the narrowest part of the bottom. Does that make sense? Do you have them taken in at the sides as well or do you not have this problem because your jeans are a smaller size?

Hi Olga! I definitely know what you mean. You can have your tailor (or DIY) taper the lower part of the ankles, which I know some women do. The best solution though is to find jeans that don’t need hemming, though I know that’s easier said than done! Have you tried LOFT petite jeans in their curvy or modern fit? Or have you tried shorter “cropped” styles instead of ankle/full length, since those usually work on me as regular jeans!

    Hi Jean,

Love your blog. You mentioned that you have the Caslon tunic in the pink smoke color. How are you planning on styling it? I’m trying to figure out a scarf like you did for the olive one.

    Posted 9.9.17 Reply
    • Jean | Extra Petite wrote:

Hi Jacki! I’d wear it with a softer patterned scarf like a lightweight floral one but in fall colors. I saw some at H&M recently in shades of pink, beige, and navy that would be very pretty. In addition to regular blue jeans, I also liked the pink smoke tunic with white or olive jeans!

Hi Coreen – unfortunately my jeans are an older color from a few years ago, but they are a mid to dark blue color. I’ve tried on several of Topshop’s current “jamie ankle” jeans and the fit is the same as mine from before – just make sure you look for the ones that say ankle and not super high rise!

    Hi Jean,

I love your blog. It inspires me to look presentable and pulled together at work! I have a question for winter workwear. How do you wear boots with office appropriate pants? I mostly wear ankle pants, and as a shorter person I feel pretty frumpy with full-length pants with a similar cut. It’s hard not to feel like I’m wearing someone’s mom’s clothing…

In the winter I mostly wear boots, and while my boots are dressy enough for the office, pairing them with denim feels too casual. But wearing boots with my ankle pants feels too …equestrian. Do you ever wear boots with your office attire? How do you keep it office appropriate and un-equestrian??

OMG! I agree so much with your boots comment. I never wear boots at work, I wear pumps and my feet are always cold during winter. Jean, I would love to see some outfits paired with boots or a shoe that covers the entire foot.

Hi Leslie and Isabelle! I’m not sure what kind of dress code is at your offices, since it can differ quite a bit from industry to industry. At my former workplaces, I never saw anyone wear boots with ankle pants. I did see the occasional ankle bootie worn under trousers or dress pants with a leg opening big enough to cover most of the boot, or either ankle or below-the-knee boots worn with a skirt and dark tights. I think the above are the only ways I can picture boots being appropriate in an office setting – but correct me if I’m wrong!

Isabelle – If you work in a professional setting, I think tights (with your usual flats or pumps) might have to be your answer!

Hi Jean! How do these Sole Society boots compare to Sam Edelman’s Petty boots?

Hi Kate! I have a pair of the Petty booties and just based on photos, it looks like the Petty booties have a much lower shaft height than these Sole Society booties. The shaft of the Petty bootie hits below the ankle bone and I think are very flattering because you get that sliver of ankle skin between your jeans and your shoes. Otherwise, the line goes from boot to jean and sometimes you have to stick your jeans into the booties which I’m not super into. On the other hand, the Sole Society booties appear to have a pointier toe than the Petty, which I prefer. I also prefer the higher heel on the Sole Society bootie but the Petty is extremely walkable for long distances and long periods of time. Hope this helps!

Dear Jean. What a wonderful outfit. I am a huge fan of booties and these look both beautiful and comfortable. I have to search elsewhere though, having the smallest feet imaginable. Still, I do fancy them. As for the scarf: thanks for the ‘less bulk’ tip regarding scarfs. Good to know for petites! Love, Lieske
