Exploring Paia, Hawaii // Cognac sandals + scalloped skirt

cute spring summer vacation break outfit petite

Aloha from Maui! It’s my first time visiting, and I have to say, those on the West coast are lucky to be just a direct flight away from this beautiful island! We’ve researched a lot of the popular tourist activities here, but do let us know if there’s any local favorites or spots off the beaten path that you’d recommend. We’re splitting our stay between an apartment rental and the more typical resorts, in hopes of seeing the island from multiple perspectives. I’ve been snapping daily videos on my Instagram stories (each are viewable for 24 hours), so join me there!

Our adorable apartment is about a 10-minute walk from Paia town center, so we’ve enjoyed strolling in and out for eats and to check out the boutiques. The Sole Society Savannah sandals that I’ve mentioned several times finally arrived, in time to come exploring with me on this trip! Like I had hoped, the low and stable block heels were comfortable for walking around, and these did not require breaking-in on me. The cognac is a true medium brown, and the new taupe color just got stocked today (small sizes have been going quickly on this style)! Depending on your skin tone, it might be a more flattering neutral.

Size-wise, I’m usually between a 5 and 5.5 and ordered both to try on. I honestly didn’t feel too much of a difference, so kept the 5s and would say these are true to size. The leather straps should stretch a little with wear to your feet width. One thing I noticed about these is they have a tiny bit of a “bumper” in the front where the harder stacked sole exceeds the insoles, which can help protect the leather at the front from scuffing off (I always, always stub my toes and ruin the tips of my shoes!).

I’m partnering with Sole Society to also share some new arrival accessories, including this straw hat and tassel clutch which are cute for vacation outfits. This Palisades clutch (comes in 4 colors) is made of a thick, woven material with additional patterned detail made of balled yarn on the front side only. It’s also listed as a case for your tablet or a makeup pouch! Note it’s a soft clutch, so your items inside are what will give it some structure. I decided to really play up the chartreuse color by pairing it with my bright scalloped skirt (waist runs small, FYI!) and lemon print blouse.

Okay it's true everyone loves guriguri, but I don't like it that much. Everyone also loves to stop at Krispy Kreme, and I'm not a fan of that either. I'd like to try the bakery in Makawao though which is another local must do.

I've been interested in Wailuku and Makawao lately. There are a few cool looking historic inn type places on the island. Highlights of the past for me include day trip to Molokai or Lanai via ferry although I'm not sure you can still do that, whale watching off Lahaina (seasonal), and volunteering on a service trip into Haleakala. Road to Hana of course is a must do. I'm curious about where Georgia Okeeffe stayed out there on her trip to the islands. I'd also like to check out the Kahanu (?) garden where there is a breadfruit collection. I'm looking forward to reading about your trip in the latest posts! Your hair looks AMAZING. I would love some tips on how to get a good cut. I keep getting overtexturized, and have pretty much accepted I'll be wearing ponytails and investing in hats for a long time.

    Hi Jean,

Need your help ASAP!!! I've never purchased from ASOS and am about to purchase an ASOS petite dress from Poshmark. In your opinion, do they run true to size or do they run a bit small like H&M;? Or does it fit more like Banana Republic petite? I'm a size 4 sometimes 6 at H&M; and a size 2P at Banana Republic. I'm trying to comparing sizing because the dress I'm looking at is an ASOS 4 petite and the seller said it's slim fitting. I'm not sure what that mean. I'd really appreciate your opinion. 🙂

Thank you so much for this wonderful list! Went to Tamura's and Ululani's (yum!), and will definitely be saving some of your other suggestions for next time!

Hi Lauren – the straps are not roomy, but I feel like they will stretch a bit with wear since real leather usually does.

You're a pro for doing the flight with a toddler! I'm envious of 9 hours though…couldn't find anything less than 12 or 13 from Boston. I definitely feel the same way about there being SO much to do here that will have to be enjoyed on a second trip. Did the road this week and had Mama's earlier. Hope you and your family have an amazing trip : )

All of those sound so fun! We really wanted to do Haleakala but it didn't work out this time…more for next visit, I suppose!
