Casual classics in Hong Kong

Hello from Hong Kong! Nick and I are here for a few short days visiting family, snapping our way around the city as we explore. This is one of my super casual tourist outfits for strolling around, comprised of simple yet classic pieces. The denim jacket around the waist not only serves as a backup layer for places with chilly AC blasting, but also adds interest to the outfit, and bonus – protects the bottom of white jeans from getting dirty when you sit down!
j brand white jeans outfit thierry lasry lively tortoise sunglassesSince white jeans have proven to be so versatile in my wardrobe year-round, I wanted another pair (my basic white skinnies have been these Article of Society ones) but with distressing. I love a thicker white denim, skinny fit and with minimal sheerness. I probably tried on no less than a dozen options, and found two styles at Nordstrom that were good quality and fit the bill. As a bonus, they are both ankle or cropped styles so no hemming even needed!

The material on these J.Brands has that thicker denim with good “hold” that I look for in higher-end denim. The distressing is almost patched on and feels sturdy, not like my knees will bust through it after just a few wears. Other potentially petite-friendly similar white jeans include these J.Brand distressed skinny jeans in a 27″ inseam and these AG The Legging cutoffs with a 27.5″ inseam, both of which I haven’t tried personally.

The other style I tried on and liked were these Hudson ankle jeans. A few notable differences between these and the J.Brand ones: In comparison, Hudson’s length is about an inch longer, bottoms are frayed hem, there are slightly more distressing patches throughout the jeans, the rise is a little higher at mid-rise, and the back pockets are bigger.

Leaving you guys with a little story from behind the scenes of this post…while shooting this outfit yesterday amongst throngs of people on a busy street of Hong Kong, a ruggedly handsome British man approached us to introduce himself (also a Nick!). I’ve been so into my Soludos shoes lately, so imagine my gleeful reaction when he said he’s the founder of the brand! He was staying at our hotel and just happened to spot their striped espadrilles on my feet. We ended up chatting for quite a bit about the styles and my fit & comfort feedback which Nick said he appreciates hearing – love a company that listens to customers with open ears!

Just a regular bra, but I safety-pinned the bra straps to the camisole straps. It's a Calvin Klein wireless bra I mentioned in a prior post.

Hi Nicole – stripes are almost like a neutral, so I suggest not overthinking it! You could wear them with almost any outfit made of solid colors (like jeans + a tee) or even if you're wearing other patterns that don't conflict with the stripes. The bow tie just tucks under my jeans, but I wouldn't worry about concealing them since they look cute when exposed.

I got the xs for a slouchier fit, also because the cotton shrinks a little in the machine dryer. The neckline is lower cut as the sizing goes up.

Hi Jean! This is probably the oddest question, but may I ask what bra (brand and style) you were wearing in the ig pic where you were standing in a dress with a glass of wine? Thanks!

Love the outfit and the story! I've been eyeing both pairs of Soludos you have. Just struggling in size as I don't have any available locally to try in store.

Question for you regarding the striped Soludos. I'm struggling in what I would wear them with. I find that you have made them seem very versatile, but wasn't sure if you had a rule of thumb of pairing the stripes with particular outfits. Also, how do you conceal the bow/tie when wearing them with jeans?

    Thanks,
    Nicole
