Ann Taylor Spring Arrivals – 50% off and free ship!

modcloth navy mustard yellow spring work outfit

J.Crew mustard top (very similar on sale), Modcloth cardigan sz S, Chicwish trench
Ann Taylor skirt c/o (same print, new color) & tote, Manolo heels, Baublebar necklace

This is another way I’ve styled this floral skirt, last blogged about here – I love the hints of mustard and gray within the print so brought them out using other pieces. The color I’m wearing is sold out but it comes in another color in the same textured fabric (FYI, I got mine taken in but my friend has the same one and was able to shrink it down ~1 size in the machine dryer). Right now Ann Taylor is having an amazing sale with 50% off site-wide and free shipping on everything! Use code CYBER50 through Monday night, online only. I’ve done a big sale round-up below on some items in my wardrobe that are still available, as well as my top suggestions from recent fitting room try-ons!
professional office outfit ann taylor petites manolo blahnik BB
Their latest collection is full of navy, cream, and yellow in prints like big gingham and pineapple – all colors and patterns after my own heart. I noticed in the fitting room that all the pieces easily mix and match due to the simplified color scheme of mainly three colors.

ann taylor petites spring sale gingham pineapples

ann taylor sleeveless sweater fringe shell pineapple shorts

sweater in xs regular, pineapple shorts in 0 regular (loose on me – petites avail. online)

fringe sweater shell – available in both cream and navy, starting in xxs online. A thickly knit, gorgeous quality shell in an elegant A-line silhouette. Lots of textural details that actually wrap all the way around the back (love it when no shortcuts are taken on details!). This wouldn’t have caught my eye online but it looked very petite-friendly and well-made in person so I had to try it on. A regular XS fit me well so it may be cropped on taller ladies. If you like this slightly flared silhouette, there is also a tweed version with fringe in cream that comes in both regular and petite!
– pineapple city shorts – when I was browsing last week, the AT employees were snapping up these new arrivals shorts for themselves. There was no petites in store (online only) so I couldn’t really gauge the sizing.
ann taylor spring striped sweater jacket

striped cardigan jacket xs regular, J.Brand jeans sz 24, BP flats sz 5.5

– striped sweater jacket – classic little cardigan jacket reminiscent of Chanel styling. Love the boucle-like texture and details including tortoise buttons, pockets, and the rolled mustard edging. Only complaint is it’s only partially lined. This is another piece I found available in regular sizing only, but the shrunken and cropped fit makes it petite-friendly. I’m trying on an xs here and the shoulders were a touch wide, but it comes in one size smaller (xxs) online. The shoulders have a little padding inside to give the sweater knit some structure.

^Love how it looks draped over the shoulders too!

ann taylor petites peplum sweater gingham scarf reviews

peplum knit shell (3 colors) – classic shell that is both stretchy and comfortable. The peplum flare is very slight, making it still appropriate for business wear. As shown below, the V neck also works well layered over button-ups if you want to wear this to a dressier setting.

Layered over my Banana Republic striped shirt, also on sale (reviewed here)

And here are a few other pieces that I either own, or caught my eye online:

– gingham shorts in navy or mustard – I love a good pair of tailored shorts that can be dressed up or down. I got a pair of these in my usual size and they were a touch loose, but I was able to shrink them a bit in my machine dryer (please note these are tagged dry clean only so machine wash at your own risk). Material is a nice 100% cotton with some stretch, and I love the angled pockets. The petite has a modest 3.5″ inseam and the higher waist is lengthening on short legs, in my opinion!

– blush piped dress now on final sale, for a steal at under $50 – see my review here and it re-styled here. Love this classic sheath which is good quality all-around with thorough piping detail. I did get the hips of mine slimmed by a tailor.

– classic cotton striped tee – I found one in my usual size to try on and it was snug and a little short, so I’d suggest sizing up or perhaps try regular sizing! Both navy and the brick red (looks just like my J.Crew striped turtleneck) are easy basics to pair with.

– navy gingham sheath dress – this is an online exclusive so I haven’t tried it on, but I’ve seen this material in-person on the skirt version and it’s a beautiful quality, thick textured fabric. The higher waistline looks promising on shorter figures, and the cut looks very versatile for layering (ie. simple white button-up underneath, cropped navy or mustard cardigan over). I also love the skirt option (fully lined, invisible zip) which looks and feels more expensive than it is.

– shoes & bags: my favorites of theirs from this season are the neutral pink bow pumps (see on me) and the low block-heeled sandals (see on me). I haven’t yet seen this crossbody / clutch bag in-person, but the combo of suede and gold chain looks pretty and luxe in all three colors!

striped wrap top – haven’t tried this one on either, but it looks like a combo of two of my favorite things: crossover drape and blue shirting stripes. I would style it by tucking the front part in, maybe into higher-waisted bottoms.

Happy shopping! I’d love to hear if you pick anything up from this sale!

First, I'm a 45 yr old that used to be fashion savvy! Felt like I started getting frumpy as I've gained a few pounds. Finding your blog has been just what I needed to get back in the fashion game again – though I'm a 6 now and not a 2. After seeing this post I ordered the yellow striped cardigan jacket. Are you wearing black jeans with it? I didn't realize the stripe was navy and I'm not sure if I can mix the jacket with black pants and am stuck with what else to wear it. Thanks so much!!!

I'm in the UK but I managed to find a pair that fit in a normal adult range – it helps that slightly bigger glasses are in at the moment so it doesn't look weird. Some of the teen ranges have plainer glasses that are fine (eg plain black plastic) or look for the smallest fit in adult ranges (mine are 50/16 and anything bigger looked ridiculous).

I love the color combos here, but the modcloth sweater looks very casual compared the the fabric of the skirt. Would you suggest it as work appropriate?

you'll have to go to a designer/high-end shop to get glasses with a smaller than 50 or 51 mm width (the width of each lens). I just went to a high end shop and was easily able to find tons of cute glasses with 47 or 48 mm widths. Places like lenscrafters, etc, really only cater to the masses or push glasses that are too big/wide. good luck.

Hi Jean! Thanks so much for replying! I also pull out some hair with my fingers, but as the day goes on, my ponytail starts to sag and my poof disappears as well. Do you have that issue when you put your hair up?

Hi there – if you watch my video tutorials (ie. for the hair bun that I filmed a few months ago) I show how I simply pull out some hair with my fingers to create that poof. I don't like using the bumpit anymore and I feel teasing often is damaging on my hair.

Hi there – I think the first step is just getting very comfortable about your body type and height so that those types of comments, when they do occur (because they will always occur, unfortunately!) , truly will not bother you and you truly won't feel like life is not fair because of height. After that I think the best way is to just immediately change the subject after comments like that are made, and people who are tactful should realize you don't enjoy those types of comments and that you don't find height to be funny or cute to joke about.

Hi KB – it just comes with years of shopping and knowing what types of silhouettes and styles work from various brands. For example, something simple like looking for pieces that seem a little awkwardly short or cropped on the online models oftentimes ends up fitting me well.

Hi Jean! I've been following your blog for years, but this is my first time commenting! How do you get the top of your hair to look so voluminous? Do you still use the Asian bump-it, or do you simply backcomb and then tug some hair out? Thanks so much!

Hi Jean, thank you for sharing this sale? please excuse the following question that I am about to ask since it is not related to this post. How would you handle people (coworker, friends, client…) that make comments about your height. Honestly, I sometimes get tired of those comments , I mean it's not like us petite females choose to be short right ? this is when you can say life is not fair. So far I just don't say anything back even though I want to tell them: "stop, I don't appreciate your comment " . I wonder how you and fellow petite gals here deal with issue like this. I wonder if there is a classy way to make those commenters realize they are not being considerate without showing that you are annoyed by their comments? thanks Jean

Jean, can you please write a post on how you spot great pieces? Most of the things you model I'd never pick out (I usually shop online), but they look nothing short of amazing on you and they way you mix and match. Is this an inborn ability/sense of style or can it be somehow developed?
