Happy 2016! Wishing each of you a joyful, fulfilling, and—of course—stylish new year! Fashion-wise, one of my resolutions is to take better & proper care of my clothing, shoes, and bags. I’ve been researching and experimenting with products for the past few months, and am eager to continue and eventually share my learnings!
This was one of my last outfits in California before returning to the cold reality of winter in Boston. The skirt was on clearance at White House Black Market, which continues to impress me with the quality on certain items. My friend who does quite a bit of sewing scrutinized this piece, and was surprised by the use of horsehair braid along the hem (for fullness), in addition to the heavier material, full lining, plus side pockets at this price point. I paired it simply with one of my go-to turtlenecks, which have gotten more wears this season than I can count.
We rung in the new year helping good friends host a party, with the same group at the same place for 3 years in a row now! I figured why not live it up a little and ended up going with the makeup look & dress from this post. The original neckline was quite low so I put on the dress, threaded a needle, and stitched together the V until Nick’s bulging eyes receded back a bit. Here’s some pics I dug out from NYE of 2014, 2015, and now 2016…must remember to continue this photo op in the years to come!
After wearing this dress for a solid 8+ hours, I can confirm it has continuously good hold at the tummy area…I was gorging on snacks all night but the very stretchy, thicker material kept my food baby in check. It’s still fully avail. in my “antique gold” color and just got restocked in the blush pink/gold “opalescent,” which was my first choice but had been sold out for ages (would be gorge for a bachelorette or girls night)! For fellow shorties, the neckline will hit lower than on the model, but is very easy to safety pin or hand-stitch up.
While on Nordies’ site, I noticed their big half-yearly sale is currently going on until Jan 3rd. You can shop the sale here and filter by size & price after selecting a category. Here’s a few picks I came across, still available in small or petite sizes:
– Ellen Tracy belted down coat w/ faux fur trim, very reminiscent of my J.Crew one but comes in a pretty olive in addition to black. Nearly 50% off and starts in size Petite P.
– Skinny cargo-style pants – under $30, starting in size 00. 27″ inseam may fit like regular ankle jeans on petite ladies.
– Lucy Paris lace dress in navy, now 40% off. Runs small and narrow (see my review)
– Infinity scarves in 2 cute plaids for 50% off – now under $12
– TOMS classic slip-ons in a tweedy gray, starting in sz 5 for 30% off. I find their slip-ons to be very comfy for running errands with no breaking-in needed.
I saw a pretty necklace recently with layered pearls and crystals, and figured it was easy enough to recreate. I found a thin rope pearl necklace and wrapped it around three times so that it sat shorter than my Ann Taylor crystal piece. Speaking of AT, my white twill trench is now online in a versatile navy blue! See my original review here and it styled again here – the quality is really lovely, and I imagine the darker color is much lower maintenance for those scared of white. I kept seeing the navy as a tease in the stock photo, but it never appeared to be available for sale until now (and is 40% off).
Hi Jean. Love your blog. I'm not petite but I love translating your looks to my regular sized frame. Thanks for all of your effort and I'm looking forward to reading your blog in 2016!
The outfit with the pink skirt is beautiful. It is very Carrie Bradshaw! x

Great look!
What do you think of the layered pearlized chain bobble necklace at AT? (http://www.anntaylor.com/layered-pearlized-chain-bobble-necklace/396479?skuId=20264024&prodId;=396479&defaultColor;=3019) I think I've seen something similar on you? This one looks kinda look – do you think it's petite-appropriate?
I love that pink skirt on you, and I agree that WHBM has really great quality for their pieces. I only shop there on sale, though, because otherwise the prices are just a bit much for me.
Love the New Years look!

Thanks for the reply Jean! ^-^ The jacket definitely looks very structured, so after all these years, has it lost its shape (especially the way the lapels fall)?
Hi Jean! Love your blog! hope you'll feature coats on sale 🙂 Thanks!
Thank you for always keeping us posted on the latest sales. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. 🙂
Awesome look!

Why are the prices différent on the Ann Taylor web site?! I rushes over there only to be left confused.
Jean, do you actually own the AT jumsuit? I always have a problem with jumpsuits engulfing me (I'm only 5'1" and 95 lbs). Does this one it hit in the right places?
Hi! This post was shot using a canon 6D camera and 85mm 1.2 lens
I know what you mean about necklaces not sitting the way you want due to chest slopes, etc. Happy to hear you have still been enjoying some wears out of it though : )
Thank you! No bumpit, just bobby pins like shown at the end of my recent hair curling tutorial!
Hi Lina! I've worn mine for many years now so I'd say yes, personally. I do want to reiterate from my initial review that the jacket has noticeable padding on the shoulders which gives it a stronger look, which not everyone might love as much.
Happy 2016 Jean! That pink skirt is stunning!
So cute! I am obsessed with that pink skirt.
First lf all I would love to say happy new year, secondly I really loved your new year's eve dress. And lastly this look is spectacular, love it.

Laughing at the part about Nick, hahaha! Thanks for the info on the deals!
HI! I love your posts! I was eyeing those M. Gemi heels in gold and missed the opportunity to get them in a 35.5! Ann Taylor has a very similar online only version called the Lucille peep toe heel that is now 40% off. I snatched these up and found them to be of very good quality and much less expensive (especially right now!). Thanks for all of your inspiration!

Hi Jean,
Just wondering what camera gear you use for you photos? Happy new year!
Lovee this midi skirt. Such a lovely shade of pink!

What gorgeous lighting! It seems as though golden hour can be very finnicky, sometimes if I shoot too early, the lighting doesn't come out as soft as I'd like it, like in your photos!
Excited to see what the new year brings to Extra Petite! (:

Love the skirt!!
Kisses from http://www.poshnessary.com ❤
"…stitched together the V until Nick's bulging eyes receded back a bit." I laughed out loud at that one!
I bought the layered AT pearl and crystal necklace featured in one of your posts in December. I love it but have discovered that it won't fit quite the same way on me as it does on you. It seems a little higher at the top and the bottom strand hangs more in a V because of, er, my bosom, which is decidedly bigger than yours (although not huge). Still, I love it and have already received compliments on it. It also helped me to realize that I can do the exact same thing that you've done in this post here; I have several strands of pearls that I can use to create a layered necklace.
Anyway, I always look forward to seeing your next post and you are a great inspiration to me! Have a wonderful 2016!
Such an pretty outfit!! <3

Quick Question
Hi Jean,
Happy New Years to you!
I've been eyeing the BlankNYC faux leather jacket for over 2 months now. As a student on a budget, I like to buy things that last in terms of quality and style. Would you consider this jacket a classic that I could wear for years to come? Thanks!
-Lina
I love the pink skirt with the stripes. Such a cute look!
