Neutrals and Orange

Blazer: Theory sz 00  Skirt: H&M; sz 2, $24.95 (similar in wool jersey)
Blouse: Gap Shirred Shoulder Top sz XSP (petites sold out, check in-store for reg. sizes)
Shoes: Aldo (old, similar in Natural) Earrings: from NYC

Just a quick outfit from yesterday incorporating favorite basics, old and new. Seeing these photos, I note room for improvement. Next time I’ll trade the formal blazer for a slouchy crewneck pullover, and swap the stiff updo for loose waves. As for the shoes – sigh, I love seeing sky high, sculpted heel, or platform heels on fellow bloggers, but I have no idea how they go about daily life in such. I’m always taking public transit or dodging brick sidewalk cracks, so no fab shoes for me.

Gap has really hit it out of the park with their poly blouses this season. I avoid manly button-up dress shirts like the plague, but feminine, drapey ones in a peachy nude? Yes, please!

This weekend I also had the pleasure of seeing the Raw Edge Henley Shirt in “new bisque.” I thought the olive one was nice (see my fitting-room review), but the “new bisque” blew me away. In person, it looked ten times better than in the stock photo. The shoulder epaulet and raw edge detail made it look much more expensive than a Gap blouse. If you can wear a sz S – XXL, then lucky you, because it’s only $24.99 online, while still full price at my local store when I tried to buy the XS.

Hi! Late post response to this but I am obsessed with getting a nude blouse. Any advice on where to look now?

    Thanks!

Thank you sweetie!! I will try to find the best weight and measurement for me.

PS: I think black is the best color for your hair, you look so elegant!

I am also curious about which kind of job u are doing now?
    Business? Science? fashion?

I think you look like the white-collar lady from wall street.

  3. @Leona Oo, I knew it before I even clicked on the link! I saw that in person and thought it looked very nice. The navy is a classic and I'm glad you picked it up! Gap really needs to work on their stock photos online. Almost all the blouses look much better in-person than in the pics!

@Ria Aw! If it doesn't look natural up top, maybe some teasing in the crown may help before you lay the hair down on the velcro? : )

@Anonymous I'm sorry for the late response!! I see the sale is over now : / But to echo what Petite-ish says, I always just add an extra item and then return it at my local store. Like she mentioned, you can order something from Banana or Old Navy as well if those stores are closer to you to make the return trip.

@Petite-ish LOL "grand puba" haven't heard that one before! ; )

@Anonymous For a safe combo, i would do brown tights with brown boots or gray tights with gray or brown boots. I was thinking herringbone patterned tights would also be so cute! For a more colorful combo (but riskier) I'd try olive or navy tights with the orange. Have fun experimenting!

@ElleHa! The taupe Chanel gets jealous…she is stored away forever, left to envy her caviar counterparts and this cheapy H&M; bag : )

@Anonymous Hi there, I haven't measured my thigh, but I want to point out that it's important not to set weight goals based on others measurements. We each have a body weight and shape that is natural and healthy for us, and being healthy is the most important. I always suggest just eating healthy, getting in your exercise, and learning to embrace whatever weight/shape your body ends up to be : )

I actually really like this outfit, the orange is a nice contrast to the more neutral pieces. And you can't have too many "nude" blouses but then again I am guilty of the same inclinations.

p.s. noticed that you really like your h&m; bag – do the chanel's get jealous? 😀

  12. You know, I actually wouldn't change the outfit itself. Downsizing the earrings a bit and wearing a bold necklace with the orange in it would balance things – the only issue I see is that the skirt is very bold and the top and blazer are very light and neutral.

Great color scheme! Have you worn the orange mini with your chambray shirt? Bet that would look great as well. I bought the Raw Edge Henley shirt in both olive and new bisque (got this one for only $19.99 during their last sale). Love both colors and especially the details but I felt the XS was still cut wider and a bit more drapier than I prefer. I was planning on returning but your comments on the new bisque have me reconsidering, lol.

  14. I hear you on the shoes Jean, I really wish I could wear amazing shoes and not just classic pratical ones but I can't even walk in heels on pavement for more than 1/2 an hour, so that's just not going to work!

I was going to ask if you've done a softer updo – would love to see you with curls! I'm also loving these buttoned shirts this season, I think the fact that they are not so structured and don't have that funny darting that never fits me is what makes them so appealing!

i actually really love this outfit combination on you! the red wool mini is super cute and perfect when paired with neutrals. and i agree that Gap has really done an amazing job with their items this season — I just wish they had petites in store as my store has very limited selection in regular sizes and everything's sold out online!

Hi, Thank you for the tip Jean. How would you wear this skirt in the winter? (What colour tights and heels/boots combination would you wear it with?) Thanks!

  20. I love this skirt! I'm like you, I avoid button up shirts too – until the ones I purchased at Loft and Ann Taylor and then it was like I couldn't have enough. They are so feminine and flowy and so much more comfortable than a stiff button up that I want as many as I can get my hands on, but have to hold back! 🙂

  21. The wool skirt looks really nice on you. I tried it on the other day and sadly, it was a tad short on me. I am going to stop by Gap tonight and see if I can find that blouse in store. Thanks for the heads up, Jean!

Effortlessly chic work outfit you have put together there. Yes! I always don't understand how people could put on great heels, stilettos even for work. I do think you have nice shoes for work too! I've to wear ugly work heels coz I need to walk a long way to take a bus. Fortunately, the hubby isn't in town now and so I use his car to commute to places I'm familiar with.

    Hey Jean!!

I finally have a night to catch up on some blogs…although, it is 9:50…I should be getting ready for bed. I have been thinking of all you ladies! I just saw your first MANGO challenge post! Love the first dress Nick chose. :p Love the booties and trench you chose to pair it with! 🙂

That orange is such a great color for fall! It is still blazing here, so wool is not an option right now! :p I would love to see this with the pullover!

You can always add a filler item to your cart to make it $50 (and the item can be from any of the gap family of stores i.e. Banana, Old Navy, Piperlime) and then return the item you don't want! Jean is the grand puba of good deals so she probably also has something for you…

  32. Jean, I love this skirt on you. Unfortunately I found it to be very itchy despite the lining when trying it on this weekend, so I decided to pass. Now I'm having second thoughts 🙂
