New workwear option: The Limited petites

the limited leopard camel The Limited 1- button blazer (BOGO free) and leopard skirt c/o, Kate Spade heels (similar)

I’ve received many questions regarding The Limited Petite line, so am excited to finally talk a bit about their new offering. The Limited introduced petite sizing last month in many of their core items as well as seasonal pieces. I learned that their core “Collection” suiting line uses the same fabrics and colors season after season, so you can mix-and-match pieces over time (why more businesswear brands don’t do this is beyond me!). These coordinates are also currently on promo for buy-1-get-1 free. I chose this Collection blazer in a versatile light camel shade, plus filled a gap in my wardrobe for a leopard pencil skirt. It’s been tricky to find a print that isn’t too far on the wild side – the coloring on this one is just right for multi-season wear, and the length helps keep it professional.
the limited leopard3
Sizing for the petites line ranges from 00P / XXSP (which appear to be going fast) to 12P for certain items like suiting and skirts, and 0P / XSP to 12P for items like blouses and dresses. I found the sizing to be consistent with that of other American workwear brands, so would suggest ordering your usual size.

For fit reference, below is the skirt and Collection blazer before any styling or adjustments. The jacket fit well for a professional suit on my 5 foot tall frame, especially in the shoulder width, button placement (right at my natural waist), and length (right at the hips). The back view is also flattering. The sleeves hit about an inch past my wrists.

The skirt, as expected for me in this size, sat lower on my hips. Since I have a longer torso and want to lengthen my leg line, I had the skirt taken in 2″ down the back center zipper, which effectively raised the waistline and brought up the hem to hit above my knees. I wore both pieces for full days of work and am happy to report the materials are comfortable and don’t wrinkle.

Measurements, for reference:
Jacket in 00P: 13.5″ across shoulders, 15″ across armpits, 14″ across waist, 23″ sleeve length, 20″ torso length. Two working pockets, fully lined.
Skirt in 00P: 13″ across waist, 17″ across hips, 19.5″ length. Black waistband and black-trimmed working pockets. Material is a slightly embossed textured fabric. Fully lined with invisible back zipper closure.

Currently petite sizing is online-only and cannot be returned to stores, but The Limited is offering free return shipping for all petite merchandise.

I saw that they added petites…I was bummed out they ran out of small sizes on a lot of items I wanted. So glad they expanded because it just adds one more place I can shop for work…I hate being so limited !

Thank you so much for letting us all know, Jean! We have Limited store in our little town and I hope they will stock on petite sizing too. And thank you for keeping your blog so down to earth. Out of several blogs that I started following a few months ago (and some are considered to hang on top charts of fashion blogging), your is the only one (no exaggeration!) I am really excited about when the new post comes on.

I have been very surprised with the quality of The Limited in the past. A few years ago, I bought a pair of basic black work pants there for the crazy discounted price of $15. It was an emergency, so I had to buy something but didn't want to waste money. (Someone had spilled coffee on me!) (*That is a lie. I spilled coffee on myself.) I thought I would just throw them away after, because surely they were so cheap they would fall apart. Nope! They are still in rotation, no matter how badly I treat them. I will definitely be checking out The Limited Petites!

I love the leopard pencil skirt, as well as your pop of metallic with the heels! Gorgeous combo 🙂

I had no idea The Limited added a petites line until this post! I'm in the market for some new work-friendly pencil skirts and will definitely be giving The Limited a try – it's been years since I've bought anything from them because their regular sizing was always a little too big. Hooray for petites!

I worked at The Limited for about 5 years in high school and on college breaks and can attest to the quality! As I write this I'm wearing black collection pants that I bought maybe 4 years ago and they still look great (partially, I think, because I don't over dry clean them). I also have a pair of exact stretch pants that I've had for 6 years that are just starting to wear out! The exact stretch ankle pants are also great for petites 🙂 Definitely give them a try if you never have or haven't in a long time!

Cool! Would you say the petite sizing is similar to banana republic petite sizing? can you compare? thank you!

  • Anonymous March 6, 2014 at 1:43 pm

Very nice and effortless look. Just a little surprised to see that the pencil skirt on the limited website, is actually bronze-ish leopard instead of the more black-n-white leopard print in your picture, which I personally prefer and think it more work appropriate. Too bad I have to pass this one (I've been collecting pencil skirt lately!) but your pictures look really good.

The quality of the pieces looks really nice! I wrote a post about The Limited's petite selection last week. A company spokeswoman said they plan to offer a petite range permanently and hope to eventually sell them in stores as well. Great news for petites! Thanks for your post!

i think the blazer is a little large on you in the bust area. will you be tailoring it or leaving as is for a casual blazer look?

  • Chantelle March 6, 2014 at 11:24 pm

I'm so glad you keep us informed on all the new pieces in the petite world! I sometimes JUST make it (I'm slightly over 5'4"), but find the petite sizing is perfect for my body because I'm skinny and it usually fits much smaller than regular sizes.

The striped lining on the sleeves is a nice touch. I take it the sleeves are vented and buttoned? That makes DIY shortening near impossible…

I love the skirt on you and think that length is very elegant and slimming: I personally think that length is very sophisticated as opposed to "cute" in a shorter length.

The skirt looks killer on you!

So when are you gonna do a post on boyfriend jeans? With this trend possibly dethroning the skinny jean, I'm very curious to know if you had any luck finding the right pair. I've yet to find a petite blogger that has pulled off this look without compromising height. I'm thinking that maybe the trick is to find a cropped pair that tapers? What are your thoughts?

  • jf March 9, 2014 at 12:40 pm

It is about time they started carrying petites!

I love how you paired such an unconventional work wear print into something wearable to the office. This has certainly given me ideas. However, out of curiosity, is the front of the skirt meant to be a bit puffed up or is this before it was tailored? Just wondering as I notice your pencil skirts tend to be a lot more fitted. Having said that, maybe the puff up front will help me hide my tummy especially after lunch!

Elza, thank you for the kind words! I'm honored to be on your regular reading list. I do hope The Limited starts offering this sizing in-store so the items can be tried on with ease. And yes, thank you again for letting me know about the ebay seller…unfortunately ebay makes it so that there's little photo owners can do, but I very much appreciated your concern and email!

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:42 pm

Funny how some things work out! I have to agree – I have a pair of their trousers (also purchased for $15 or less) from half a decade ago and they are really the only pair of trousers I reach for.

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:44 pm

Ellie, great to hear about the longevity of their pieces. I'm hoping this blazer will last as long as your pants did!

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:44 pm

I have recently and have been pretty happy!

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:46 pm

For this blazer and skirt, yes comparable, except for the BR Sloan fit which I feel runs half to one size smaller than their other stuff. I have not tried the pants however, so unfortunately can't attest to the sizing!

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:47 pm

Thank you! I have to admit though that my lighting may alter the colors a bit and in reality it may be closer to what you see on the website. I am sure the right leopard color scheme will come along for you : )

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:49 pm

Hmm…I don't plan on altering since bust size is an area that has fluctuated quite a bit for me over the years (and even due to a thin vs padded bra), so I don't mind if it's not very fitted. For someone else with that concern I wonder if it can be taken in along the bust dart.

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:50 pm

Thank you, Linda! I don't do either…it may just be sun damage, actually.

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:50 pm

Hi sharon! Unfortunately it was from a few seasons ago from the BR factory, however they have been known to bring back several popular designs over the years. i'll keep my eyes peeled this summer for something similar!

  • Jean March 10, 2014 at 11:51 pm

I think it might just be the angle or pose : ) The skirt is flat in the front and shouldn't puff up.

  • Kellie The Shoe Diva March 12, 2014 at 6:59 am

I love the pop of red on the all-neutral outfit! I really enjoy dropping by your blog. I'm not petite, but I love how you embraced your body type and how you help other girls love themselves, too. Very inspiring.

I like the skirt matching with the blouse…very pretty colour combo..

  • Caroline March 13, 2014 at 12:11 pm

I was inspired by your post and ordered the skirt! I own half a dozen pencil skirts from The Limited and this will probably be my favorite. Aside from the new petite sizing it seems like the quality of their items keeps going up! The skirt fabric has a good amount of weight and is slightly textured, while the lining is soft yet substantial. The trim around the waist and pockets is a nice stiff material, and the hardware in the back is of very good quality. I'm 5'2" 115 lbs with a curvy build, and the size 2p fits me perfectly. Prior to the petite sizing I wore the regular size 2 which came down to my knees; this hits a few inches above which is much more flattering. I also ordered the Sateen Pencil Pants in 2p and was also impressed with the quality and how well they fit (I own two other pairs of their pencil pants, as well as some of their longer pants, and the material and hardware on these seems even better than usual). Maybe it's time to finally try their blazers. 🙂

  • Jean March 14, 2014 at 1:17 am

So glad to hear the leopard skirt worked for you, Caroline! The material/trim was hard for me to describe and I think you nailed it. I keep on hearing nothing but positive comments on the quality so hope that's here to stay.

  • Jean March 14, 2014 at 1:19 am

Hi there – I have tried so many styles and think they key is the look for straight cut jeans versus actual 'boyfriend' style. I really love Gap's "real straight" cut which fits on a petite frame similar to how boyfriend cuts fit on others. They offer a petite length online if you have a shorter inseam, so it takes minimal rolling to get the slightly cuffed up look. I tried a few different rolls and just at the top of the ankle looks the most flattering (in my past few blog posts I had it rolled up once too many so it's a little truncating). Good luck shopping!

So, I'm going to be particularly finicky, but in case you felt like learning something about big cats, this is more of a cheetah print than leopard. It looks great, and I honestly find it to be even more versatile than leopard.

  • Anonymous July 30, 2014 at 8:01 am

Thank you for posting a review of petite items at The Limited. I read every one of your entries, and most of the time, it's a file-away-for-later scenario for me. I am finally in a need of a suit and found myself at The Limited where they are having great end of season sales. (The sales clerk also told me that in Aug, they will be having their suit sale!) Last week when I went online, there were hardly any petite sizes in stock, but last night, I found their petite suiting available in all sizes. I ordered the Collection Slanted Pocket Jacket ($63.20) 00P and the Collection Wide Band Pencil Skirt ($35.94) 00P & 0P. Both in navy. I'm really excited to see how they fit and hope they work out due to the great pricing. In the meantime, I was so pleased I could reference your post to get an idea of fit and quality. Please keep up the good work here on ExtraPetite. You continually post relevant and helpful content. You have also help me embrace my size especially when it comes to the workplace and looking like an adult!

  • Jean August 1, 2014 at 10:00 pm

Thank you for your kind comment! I really hope at least a few of the items ordered work out for you. It's been nice to have one more option for petite suiting other than the usual Banana Republic and AT/LOFT!
