Chartreuse has become one of my favorite colors over the years. It's similar to classic mustard yellow, but has twinges of green and neon, making it very current. At first I didn't know what to do with two chartreuse sweaters, but soon realized how fun they were doubled up. There's something I love about layering pieces in same exact shade (see it here with emerald green) - It's like mom's favorite twinset, reinvented.

I've received some questions from readers on how to pair brighter or fluorescent yellow. If the color has a true fluorescent tint, I'd suggest toning it down with neutrals (taupe, white, camel, browns), or going full-on bold with a complementing print. If it's just a brighter yellow, I'd experiment with earthy pairings like deep red, olive, and leopard print. Here are some past outfits incorporating my favorite color (click images to visit post):

I had the hardest time styling these ankle boots with colored tights, but was inspired by a page out of a J.Crew catalog showing heathered-gray tights and cognac booties. I think this combo works nicely, as long as the rest of the outfit isn't too busy. I kept my blouse, skirt, and bag in the same monochromatic scheme as the booties, to not battle the bright yellow or heathered pattern.

This was actually the last outfit in my "style in a suitcase" series, but I forgot to snap photos while in California. I happily re-wore it on a mild weekend here in Boston.
Readers - Are you a fan of doubling up on the same color?

I do double on some colors at times. I try to give some contrast by adding accessories. Otherwise, without them, it would look too heavy. Accessories add a nice balance to things.
ReplyDeleteI like the monochrome look with different shades of the same color (i.e. white with cream, pastel blue plus navy, etc.) Also, that dolman sweater + mini skirt outfit is one of my favorites of yours, ever! If I get around to making a pinterest page, that's going to be one of the first images I pin :)
ReplyDeleteI really like the tights with the ankle boots – perfect.
ReplyDeleteI love how you interpreted the monochromatic look for your sweater and cardigan, I'll have to try it sometime! Personally I love using colors within the same family to create an ombre look, for example a peachy pink blouse and some bright red skinnies tied together with a gray cardigan and some neutral accessories.

That last picture of you is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI don`t usually double up on the same color, because I never like how it looks in the end. The matches I have are often not good enough.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to say though that this is a beautiful color!
I want to have something yellow-ish or even bright yellow in my wardrobe. Zara has blazer with interesting zippers going around that I am looking at actually. Just can`t bring myself to spend the $$$ yet.
All the outfit here so perfectly. nice bright for spring..happy weekend
ReplyDeleteYou look absolutely amazing. This is a great outfit, and I love the photographs!

I love this color on you Jean! I have a loft skirt in the same color and paired it with a chambray shirt, pearls and a neutral print leopard cardigan. It's really a versatile color and so fresh. Thanks for showing us another way to wear this amazing color!
ReplyDeletei love all the pairings you've shown here. i didn't think the mustard/chartreuse color could be so versatile but i see that it can be. thanks for all the great ideas. :)
ReplyDeleteLove all these colors together! The double chartreuse, cognac, gray and tan. You look great!

Wow the photographs are stunning! Everything pops, props to the photographer & the modeling!
ReplyDeleteI'm a little afraid to wear that color but it looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Wish they would re-release that gorgeous zip up!
ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon your blog a month or so ago while trying to figure out ridiculous sizing for a pair of shoes and since, have surreptitiously read every single post (while hiding my desktop at work)! ;) I noticed you've mentioned some negative commenting so I just thought I'd write you a quick hello and let you know how much I love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteLove this outfit Jean! I used to think that "yellow" looks bad on Asian skin tones but I'm a lot more open to experimenting with different colors now. I have the same cardigan and wears it to work all the time! I feel like it makes me look old though...maybe it's just how I style it with boring work bottoms....
ReplyDeleteI love chartreuse with grey and I'm also a big fan of doubling up on the same color or close shades.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!

I actually haven't been familiar with chartreuse color but it looks lovely on you! I don't think I've doubled up on color myself (unless it's black color) but you styled the outfit very well!

These photos are gorgeous!!! :) And I am a recent convert of the doubling up on the same color trend (loving red on red and black on black). Chartreuse is a great color on you and I really like how you styled this outfit. :)
ReplyDeletelove the colour, looks great on you...

This color is so flattering on you, Jean! I love how you styled it with the gray tights--they pair so nicely with the chartreuse.

ReplyDeleteYou definitely succeeded in styling everything together. I love that you have chosen a graffitied wall as your backdrop.
Always so brave and edgy and willing to push the envelope! I'm always so scared to pair pieces of the same color because in my mind they have to match EXACTLY. But as you showed us here, one can definitely pull it off if the pieces are close enough. :-)
ReplyDeleteI double on colors all the time, black on black, purple on purple, looks good when rest of the outfit is in contrast colors.
ReplyDeleteYour outfit looks good on you, but not sure if everyone can carry heather gray tights with cognac boots.
Hi Jean,
ReplyDeleteI was on maternity leave and was about to go back to work in a month when I chanced upon your blog. I was looking for fresh ideas on dressing up at work. Having kids is not an excuse to dress sloppily. Just want to say hi and commend your site for giving me an inspiration to look my best.
I found your blog while doing research on Chanel WOC and 2.55. Your content is very thoughtfully presented and useful, and I love your style and your frugal sensibilities!!
ReplyDeleteTopic suggestions: First, jewelry, both costume and investment pieces. Second, style icons/sources for inspiration. I like the clothes on The Good Wife, and the stylist actually maintains a blog on the show's website. Unfortunately the clothes are not frugal-friendly, they seem to come from flagship Saks' fourth floor. And, I like to watch Selling NY because the female brokers are always wearing interesting necklaces.
Miscellaneous NY-specific shopping tip: my parents live on Long Island, and when I used to live in NY in the aughts, I found that it was much easier to find small sizes (of brands like Theory) on sale at the Saks and Bloomingdales at the Walt Whitman Mall, relative to the Manhattan stores, where the small sizes seem to sell out quickly!
You look lovely! Love how youve paired the same colors and still kept it interesting!
ReplyDeletePairing with the same colored tops works so well! And those ankle boots are so adorable and chic. :)
ReplyDeleteFound a cute alternative cardigan in "lime" at F21 for a bargain!

Aw this is so cute chartreuse is one my favorite colors. And I don't really double up on colors because I'm afraid that it might be too much. Hey this looks lovely on you so I might try it out!
