As part 2 of my Fall Capsule wardrobe posts, I wanted to share easy outfit combinations using the capsule items for a variety of occasions! These outfits cover dress codes from casual to office to travel, and I threw in a few for dinner / going out since that category is usually trickier for me!
Below is a summary of this year’s capsule picks, and this blog post goes more in depth about the sizing, fabric and fit of the items. I’ll also be adding videos here of the different capsule looks styled on me!

Fall Capsule outfit Ideas

The elevated casual category is where my style typically falls these days! A pair of full length straight jeans with ballet flats or sneakers, plus a mock neck tee and longer top layer (trench or cardigan) has been my comfortable, practical everyday formula.

For several of the looks in this post, you’ll notice a white tee rimming the collar under a pullover sweatshirt. This is great for adding a little interest to a simple outfit, as well as color contrast – especially if the color of the sweater is close to your skin tone and might look a little drab. Another bonus is the cotton under layer helps extend the number of wears between washing your sweaters!

In the Fall / Winter, I tend to wear my gray jeans more than blue and also like them as a softer alternative to black. Aside from these Madewell ones, Levi’s “Well Worn – Black” is a great charcoal option and comes in their Ribcage style (24 x 27 fits full length on me) as well as the Wedgie Straight which fits like a slim ankle length jean on me (size up if you don’t like them snug).

Do you have a favorite look amongst these ideas?
Hi, I love the trouser outfits! What color are you wearing in the photos? The link went to ‘nomad taupe’, but in your pics it looks lighter. Thanks and love your blog!
Hi, Jean! I ordered the Adidas Spezial. I love these sneakers! I have a narrow heel and they tend to slip when I tried them on. I haven’t been able to find if they come in wide and medium, or just the one width. Can you provide suggestions, please? I’m willing to try heel inserts, but I have no idea which brand is best. Thank you for all of your petite fashion ideas!
Hi Amber, I’ve only seen them come in one width, and regretfully don’t have any recommendations for heel inserts that prevent slipping out! The heel inserts that I use are only to lift the heel up so that the ankle doesn’t rub, and I don’t think that would help. I have seen some brands on Amazon make heel inserts that are more like a U shape that go around the back of your heels – maybe those would help?
Love how this shows so many options for mixing and matching! Can you please link the skirts you used too?
Hi Kate! Actually I’m only working with the slip dress in this post and layering over it, instead of using a separate skirt.
However, Quince does make a slip skirt in the same color and sizes as their silk dress, and it looks the same as the dress does in my outfits here!
Love this! all of this! thank you for the inspiration. I could use a lot of it now.
Hi Shannon! So glad it’s helpful : )
Hi Jean! I have always loved your leggings looks. Leggings work for me because they are comfy and have a streamlined look with my oversized shirts that I like to wear for comfort. I am small/petite but do not love the feel of tight fitting tops so I often lean toward slim leg pants and oversized (or not firm fitting) tops. Though I will wear a slim fitted top under a blazer/cardi/coat – as you have shared above. My one caveat is that I prefer my tops to cover my butt and front. So I try to find longer tops for the coverage, but that are also body-skimming. Do you have any recommendations for such tops? I recall seeing them in some of your previous posts but haven’t had luck finding them in the search option. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Stacia! I was just looking at Old Navy for such tops (search “tunic” in their search box). I’m not sure about your height / sizing, but they have several options that even come in in petite sizing.
I also like looking for “curved hem” tops from various retailers since just the middle curved part of the hem is the longest, providing coverage where we want it without looking too truncating!
