A Week of Outfits Vol. 16: Early Fall

fall 2023 work outfits for petite women

I wasn’t ready for it just yet, but it’s officially sweater and jacket weather here in Boston! I’m transitioning some favorite pieces from summer (like these linen blend pants and silk slip skirt) by pairing them with more Fall-weight fabrics and knits.

Most of these looks also feature my mini Edited Pieces reversible belt, which just got fully restocked in both colors! Since I get this question often, I reach for my original 30mm wide belt more with denim (or loose pants that need a functional belt to make the waist fit tighter), and I prefer the narrower 17mm wide Mini belt as a subtle accent piece with skirts, dresses, or trousers.

Wide leg crops + monochromatic layers

As mentioned in a recent post, I had already been a longtime fan of J.Crew’s Sydney pant style in their cotton fabric, but this latest version in a 4-season fabric is just *chef’s kiss. The fabric feels high quality, is smooth and comfy for wearing all day, and the fit is great on me with no waist gap (runs smaller than Ann Taylor pants). My waist is 25″ and I can do 00P in this for a snug waist fit, or 0P for some more room at the waist.

Slip skirt + Looser knit top

Although I mentioned in this post that I wear my The Drop slip skirt more since the poly fabric is thicker and lower maintenance, I’ve yet to find a color as gorgeous as this Champagne silk on the Quince one. It’s elegant and soft paired with cream, and also beautiful with earthier Fall tones like taupe, deeper browns, olive, and navy.

Crop Bomber Jacket + Trousers

AF trousers 25 short (similar better stocked), Zara jacket sz kids 11/12 (womens options here & here), AT heels 5.5, Cafune bag c/o

This jacket might be my favorite kids department find to date! I hope some of you were able to grab this from my Instagram stories last week when it was fully stocked. I’ve been hunting for this particular crop bomber style, and had to do kids in order to get a length this cropped. I also love this jacket with jeans and Adidas sneakers, or this black mini skirt (0 Petite fits me perfectly).

Sweater Jacket + Breezy Pants

If you’re in a warmer climate, these breezy pants would still be great for Fall paired with a lightweight knit. If the linen-blend fabric on the Z supply pants feel too summery for you, I’ve also worn this same outfit but with my Amazon trousers in Khaki thin fabric.

Plaid blazer + trouser jeans

This outfit is a repeat from a few months back since I love the look and clean lines so much. These exact trouser jeans seem sold out in Petites, but another similar pair that I tried on in Petite sizing with good reviews are these J.Crew trouser jeans which have a slightly wider leg fit.

Hi Jean, these transitional outfits are so cute! I love the J Crew sweater jacket, but was wondering – is the hardware on the jacket metal or plastic?

Thank you Mia! I just grabbed my jacket to check and they seem like a lightweight metal, but I’m not 100% certain even looking closely at it

Hello, I am looking for a belt to wear with a dress for an upcoming wedding. The dress is a blousy top with pleated skirt in Navy blue. I am 5’1 with a short torso. Dress needs something for more polish. Thank you

Hi Joanne, with navy I’d recommend a slim style similar to our EP mini belt – I would personally do the black side since I love black with navy for a dressier look!

What are your thoughts on Quince vs. Everlane pieces in terms of quality, fit, value, etc.?

I’ve found my sweaters from both places to be pretty good in quality, but Everlane definitely provides more original designs while Quince will come out with a similar style a few seasons later. The fit can vary greatly based on the type of piece and whether it’s more fitted or oversized in style.

Jean, long time reader here but infrequent commenter. 🙂 I adore your blog and am loving all the posts with the J Crew Striped cardigan with gold buttons. Alas, I don’t have easy access to J.Crew. Any chance there is a dupe you could recommend? maybe off Amazon or Temu or any other retailer? thanks for considering!

Hi Katie, thank you so much for following along! Sadly I don’t have a personal recommendation for a specific one available internationally, but I think this is a pretty popular style I’ve seen on international bloggers too. I’ve also seen some people feature Amazon dupes but I haven’t tried any of them myself

Like most of us, I’ve briefly followed many fashion bloggers, YTers, TikTokkers, LTKers, etc. but usually end up quitting after a bit. There are only two that I now follow; you are one.

While I first subbed b/c I’m a fellow petite (abt 1 size up from you usually),, I stick around because you dress so well. I love how you address your main topic (petites) but also compare brands, sizing, fit and fabrics (the right fabric is so important). I consider it a personal win when you feature a garment I already own, and appreciate the new ones you review.

Your clothing choices are so classy, and your neutral color palette spot-on for my taste. As a busy working mom yourself, I appreciate the time you must carve out for this.

    TY, TY, TY.

Thank you so much for your kind note and for following along! I’m sincerely appreciative of your feedback and that you took the time to read the blog and share such an uplifting comment. People don’t engage on blog posts very much anymore, so reading your comment is very encouraging! xx
