Summer date night style in ASOS petites

ASOS scuba lantern skirt 0 regular (runs small; also in petite), ASOS blouse 00p,
Saint Laurent bag (review), Steve Madden heels 5.5, Quay sunglasses (older style)

Statement sleeves have been riding the trend wave for some time now – they’re one of the more wearable trends, in my opinion, and can easily spruce up a plain outfit! This lightweight blouse has a double ruffle at the sleeves and a playful, swingy silhouette that floats when you move. For a summer date or party look, I paired it with this scuba skirt in coordinating colors. For work wear, I’d style it un-tucked over high-waisted pants, but with a camisole layered underneath and tucked in for extra coverage.

Today’s post is in partnership with ASOS, one of my go-to brands for trendier pieces that fit without alterations. Their petites collection runs small compared to most American brands, and I occasionally even prefer their regular sizing, like with this skirt!

I tried this skirt on in both regular and petites, and the regular US 0 is pretty snug on me throughout the elongated-style waist. The petite version, in comparison, is a touch smaller and shorter in length. The skirt is in a medium-weight, unlined scuba fabric and is stretchy with a back zipper. Size US 0 regular measures 11.5″ across the waist when un-stretched, and is 17″ long.

I post about ASOS quite a bit, but here are a few tips if you’ve never shopped there before:

– The brand is UK-based, but offers free shipping on orders over $40 and free returns for many international countries. Returns are quick and easy with an included USPS label and a self-sealing shipping bag. They have a pretty good deal where for $19 a year, you get unlimited 2-day international shipping on all orders (and of course I take advantage of this deal, but be warned – it can be a little too convenient!)

– I make frequent use of the video feature on each item page, where you can see the garments modeled “in action” from a 360 angle. They also use petite models for many of the petite items, which makes a big difference in knowing what to expect with the fit!

– ASOS offers an intense range of sizing, including swimsuits starting at bra sizes 30A to 30I (yes, I), maternity and petite maternity, tall, fuller bust, the list goes on.

I’m usually all about tucking blouses into skirts (to highlight the waistline), but experimented both ways here and the un-tucked look is growing on me! The shorter blouse doesn’t cut into the leg line as much, and the swing shape melds with the skirt to create a continuously flowing A-line. See the photo directly above vs. below – would you do tucked or un-tucked?

Thank you to ASOS for partnering on this post.

I love your outfit! I regularly shop at ASOS and absolutely love their petite line. The dresses fit me perfectly, it's really a dream come true if you consider most brands in Europe only have regular sizing!

Thank you for your input, Thao! I've gotten so used to dressing in certain formulaic ways that work for me, it feels good to stray and experiment once in a while (even if it's with a tiny change like tucking!).

Hi there – thank you for your kind comment! I would recommend searching pinterest for dress alterations tutorials. I've found that platform to be so helpful with step-by-step photo instructions on basically every simple type of alteration. For a shift dress without much stretch, remember shifts are meant to be straighter cut by design so I wouldn't take just the waist in too much. When I alter shift dresses, I usually start at the armpits and slim it along both sides all the way down to the hem. Good luck!

That flowey top is really cute! I think I like it better untucked than tucked, just for the flow effect.

I know how you feel about wanting to accentuate your waist line, and I LOVE how it looks on you! It's especially hard trying to dress for our "body type" – but I think untucking shows a different level of confidence that's really nice too! I'm not ready to go for untucking myself yet, but hope to be able to do so soon 🙂 Love both looks Jean!

Hi Jean! i love your posts and have gotten a lot of inspiration from your outfits! I am just as slim as you and have trouble finding clothing that fit well without having alterations done. But some i have to alter myself. Do you have any tips for altering shift dresses (particularly taking in the waist) where the fabric has no stretch? That would be helpful. thank you!

Your really cute ASOS outfit coordinates so well with the backdrop! It's such a fun and feminine look! It is because of you that I've bought a lot of great articles of clothing from ASOS over the years, so thank you for always styling their clothes so beautifully!! I really love the tucked looked as it really helps to showcase the ruffled sleeves and pattern on the skirt!

Asos Petite jeans are really nice, fitting similar to the Topshop Jamie. I like the ridley jean in clean black. Use your Topshop sizing for these. Skirts I generally size up because the waist measurements are quite small. The top is really cute
