Boston friends, I’ll be hosting an event at Ann Taylor’s 18 Newbury Street location, this Friday August 19th from 1-3PM! It’s just steps away from the Arlington MBTA green line station, so come pop in on your lunch break and say hello! It’s for their Friends & Family event so you’ll get 40% off your purchase, and there will be sips and small bites. This promo is also available online through this weekend!
I tried on several of AT’s new arrivals and will share some reviews soon. As a heads up for fellow drape blouse fanatics, this top comes in five different colors/patterns including a spotted soft pink one. Sadly my favorite colorway is one of the only ones not available in petites, so I have some sleeve shortening to do (fyi, the neckline also hits higher on the petites version). Tip for a reviewer who said the neckline clasp doesn’t stay in place: use a pair of tweezers and clamp the clasp down a bit to make the opening smaller.
I also wanted to share another look that I wore recently in hot Shanghai, featuring this crochet skirt for the umpteenth time. Pencil skirts are undoubtedly one of my favorite shapes to wear, but some tweaking is usually necessary to get a close and customized fit on different body types.
As you guys may remember from this post, I added back darts to make the waist taper in more on this crochet piece. Similarly with the tweed Ann Taylor skirt above, I detached the lining from the outer and made very similar darts on the back waist so it’d sit higher up on my waistline. I don’t mind a looser hip area on pencils since it can give off the illusion of more curves on my straighter-cut figure!
Wow great outfit. we can also wear it with hijab.
How fun! I wish I lived in Boston! Loving both of the outfits you showcased.

Hi, Jean! I was browsing the H&M; sales section when I noticed a skirt that's similar to your (beautiful) crocheted skirt. Thought your readers might be interested before it sells out entirely: http://www.hm.com/us/product/46986?article=46986-E
That skirt never gets old! I kind of regret not springing for it myself because you make it look so great. I also love love love the first monochromatic outfit. Perfection. I'd like to try that more in the future. I think it may be a huge trend if it's not already. I am basically exactly the same size and shape as you (which is why I started following your blog so many years ago), and I couldn't agree with you more that a looser hip is not a bad thing. In garment design these days there seems to be such an emphasis on minimizing the hip area. I wish someone would make things to emphasize the hips!
Love that skirt in the first photo! Pencil skirts are also my favorite to wear. Hope it was a good event!

You have a great eye for pairing clothes for petite. I am slightly shorter than you and struggle with getting the right clothes that fit from European brands (haven't explored Asos). Wish you would do an event in Paris one day..
LOVE that lace skirt !!! xo, Emily

By the way, how do you keep white skirts and pants clean if you're going to sit down in lots of places?
I just get really anxious about it.
I ordered the tweed skirt last week and waiting for it to come in he mail. Thought it would be a great for work. I'm tempted to order the blouse now.
Jean, I love the first outfit with the silk wrap blouse and AT pencil skirt! I am looking forward to shopping when the AT website comes back online. I wish I lived in Boston but I'm in LA. Hope your event goes well!
