Chicago Weekend: Urban Outfitters Motel Romper

urban outfitters motel romper chicago-2

Motel Suri Romper sz XS (free shipping & returns),  Hermes belt
Steve Madden heels, (lower version for less – my mom, aunt & cousin own & love these)

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! We ended up getting last Friday off at work as a surprise, so went on a last-minute trip to Chicago for fun with friends. It just so happened to be a final Grateful Dead concert or something and almost everything was booked, so special thanks to the Dana Hotel & Spa for accommodating us on short notice! We especially loved the rooftop bar with fire pits to warm up around.

I posted this romper on Instagram months ago when I was debating over keeping it. My style is more conservative, thus I wasn’t sure how much bang for the buck I’d get out of a piece like this. However I loved the black & white pattern, the long sleeves to balance out the shorts, the pockets, and the feminine wrap-style neckline. It was my first time trying the British brand Motel, and the fit was surprisingly petite-friendly! I’m so glad I ended up keeping this, as I’ve worn it about a dozen times already since with either low sandals for daytime, or high heels for dinner and dancing.

Fit wise, I’m wearing a size XS regular here with just a few adjustments…
The proportions of the torso and shorts are actually great for someone with a shorter stature. On me, you can see the shorts look noticeably less short and risque than on the model. The V-neck is deep, though, so for those who want more coverage, you can add a safety pin at the neckline like I did here. The waist has an elasticized part with clasp button and was pretty fitted on me. This resulted in a flattering silhouette with a cinched waistline against the blousier top and shorts. The sleeves were a few inches too long for me and was probably the only sign of it being a regular sizing piece. I’ve been wearing them folded up at the cuffs and pushed up in lieu of getting alterations.

Measurements of an XS: 15″ from top of shoulder to waistline, and approximately 30″ total length. The waistband when unstretched is 12″ across, and the sturdy wide elastic stretches to about 15″ across. Sleeves are about 23″ long.

Another thing I’m loving about rompers is that no brainpower is needed at all about how to style or put together the outfit. On the flip side, do be warned that extra time is needed for going to the bathroom while wearing a conjoined piece ; )urban outfitters motel romper chicago I’ve kept my eyes peeled over the past few months for a sale on this to share about, but no such luck – it already sold out once at full price and just got restocked in XS, so if you’re looking for a fun summer piece, don’t miss out!

Can you let us know where you got the black clutch bag? I've been searching for a black clutch and you don't mention where you purchased any of the black ones that are in your photos. Would love to know! Thanks!

At a start-up company, it's not unusual to work on holidays. Regardless, I'm not sure why this needs to be a point of contention.

Hi there – I don't think the Stecy heels are comfortable per se, but I wear them quite a bit out in the city without issues. At the end of the day they are a 4" high, thin-strapped stiletto so I suggest wearing in moderation as with any other similar heels! I don't have toe spillage here because the front strap is on the narrower side and holds my foot in. As for the lower heel BP sandal, I don't own them myself but bought them for my mom and cousin because they prefer not to wear heels over 3.5." I tried them on and found them to be comfortable and true to size. Hope that helps!

This is a rather hilarious thread. As a physician, I'd like to add that the "squiggliness" is her vastus medialis. Since she put her weight on the left in that picture, this is supposed to contract. It may be less apparent on people who don't work out but it's normal.

I'm not sure if my comment went through, so I'm going to ask it here again. Do you have both the higher and lower heel Madden shoes? Any problems, comfort-wise, walking around in the higher-heeled Madden? What size did you purchase the shoes and are they true to size? Also, I find that I always have a problem with toe-spillage when the heel is too high– any tips? Thanks, Jean!

Snaps on the bottom would be such a great idea! Adult brands should definitely borrow that aspect from children's wear : )

I browse Anthropologie and BHLDN a lot, and decided to hop on over to their sister store UO for a change. I haven't shopped there in a really long time, but the free shipping & free returns (must be a new policy for them) made it easy to try!

You look beautiful in this romper. I too ordered this a few months ago but it didn't look quite so good on me! I returned it (and had the confirmation of return email) but was never refunded, which I'm very disappointed by having ordered it direct from Motel.

Not to be rude, because I think you're such a beautiful girl, but in the second picture, your left thigh looks squiggly. Maybe that's why they think you photoshopped. :/

The detailing on that romper is gorgeous but I'm just sooo iffy on rompers in general! I hate that they've gotten so popular this summer! Haha, well I guess it's just another version of a co-ord. It definitely looks great on you.

I love this print! What made you venture outside your usual stores to find this piece? I wish it came in a dress or separate – the bathroom situation dissuades me from rompers! (Or, it would be great to have snaps on the bottom like a onesie hahaha… been spending too much time with my kid.)

Looks so good on you! I'm a little hesitant about the length of rompers because it's always so awkward when you accidentally get one that's a little too short, and sitting down causes a little too much cinching in, um, your privates hahaha

Hello! Mine was adult XS. I got measurements from PPS for both the kids 13/14 and the adults large (pasted for ya below) and would've preferred the kids one based on that! It just wasn't in stock at the time. I had to move the belt loops up on mine as they hit lower than my natural waist.

    Kids Knee Length Robe 13./14
    Length From HPS 35
    Length From HPS 36
    Length From HPS 37
    Sleeve Length 18.5
    Sleeve Bottom 9.75

    # Kimono Knee length Robe Adult XS:
    Length From HPS 35
    Center Back Length 33
    Chest Width 18
    Bottom Width 21
    Sleeve Length 19.5
    Sleeve Bottom Width 10.25

I definitely prefer the romper on you than on the model. If all I had seen was the model shot, I wouldn't even consider it. Having seen it on you, I'd probably give it a chance now. It looks way more fun.
