Textures and stripes at Lou & Grey Natick

Lou & Grey stripe popover in petite c/o, Gap jeans (old), Hermes belt, KennaT jacket (old)
Halogen Marlie heels (color sold out – similar), Coach bag from eBay (avail. new)

Fellow LOFT fans might’ve noticed a new label this year – Lou & Grey is the latest addition to the Ann Inc. family, and can be found in select LOFT stores and online. The brand is all about casual, laid-back pieces and loungewear for a “comfortably confident” lifestyle. They opened their first standalone boutique in the Natick mall (a black hole of shopping btw, for any Bostonians who haven’t yet been), and offers curated books and independent artisan goods in addition to clothes. Nick and I popped in yesterday, and I quickly lost him nose-deep in the bartending books…
lou & grey striped topSizing runs similar to AT/LOFT and petites can be found online. I’m wearing the textured popover in my usual size there (xxs petite), and it’s like a marled sweatshirt in a boxier cut, true to the 80’s-inspired “popover” style. The texture is really interesting up close, with little hints of tweed and nautical-esque rope pattern. My favorite piece in the collection is unfortunately sold out in petites, but if you can wear regular sizing, check out this cute and versatile moto jacket. It’s made of the same textured “specklestripe” material I’m wearing here but in a more shapely cut, has great reviews, and is a whopping 60% off today with code FLASH (ends 10/27 morning). Please read the reviews on the jacket sizing as some shoppers have indicated it runs big.

I also tried on this colorblock pocket dress in petites, which was super comfy. It’s like a long tee shirt that you can doze off in, but can be dressed up a bit with booties and a scarf for running errands. Side note – I got this plaid scarf during the last LOFT sale as a free shipping filler, and ended up loving it. The fringe only runs along one length of the scarf, which adds the right amount of stringy detailing without looking like a mop.

For pieces that are very basic in cut or style, texture is key for elevating the look. One item that I really liked in-person (but petites is online-only) was a fluid, lightweight blouse with unexpected comfy ribbed cuffs at the wrists and collar. I came home to look up the item # and was so surprised to see it as this “silky sweatshirt,” which I had scrolled past several times un-enticed by the stock image. The flattering drape of the top doesn’t come through in the photo and you can’t even see the cute knit cuffs. I can see this being a winner basic/ foundation piece and am keeping it bookmarked for future promos.

Thumbs up Lou & Grey for the abundance of seating & reading material for our patient men. While snapping these pics, I also ran into a sweet reader (hi Lorena!) and her husband who was taking a well-deserved rest from all the shopping : )

What awesome outfits! I'm SOOO bummed I didn't keep textured popover striped sweater. I didn't know how to style it and it looked like a bath towel on me so I returned it…. I wish I had seen this post at the time. Are there any other sweaters that you've seen recently with this texture to recreate the look?!

Hi Jean! This is my first ever post at your blog (at any blog actually) and just want to say that I've been a reader for the past year and am such a huge fan. I recently moved to Massachusetts from California and it's so great to actually recognize the places that you mention in your posts like Natick Mall that I've actually been to. I certainly hope that I have a chance to run into you one day!

Awww, you look so polished (even in these casual looks)! I never looked into Lou & Grey styles until V recently, even though I ALWAYS shop at LOFT. I have to size down (as you said), and also liked that sweatshirt you're wearing and the moto jacket (but have few already). Last week, I got a Lou & Grey skirt (maroon w/ black stripes) to wear with black tee, leggings, and booties. I also got a white w/ black striped casual top from the line.

Hi there – I go to a tailor in Chinatown on Knapp St, and although he has shortened leather jacket sleeves for me I'm not 100% sure what he can do with other leather/faux leather items.

He doesn't have a store name and only speaks Cantonese, but I have many non-Chinese friends that go to him for straightforward jobs and just communicate through gestures. He is located across from the grocery store on that alley/street, and you can see his sewing machine through the big window. His hours are supposed to be 10AM-5PM, but in case he closes up shop later or earlier I'd suggest going later or earlier than those hours.

Hello – I've worn it comfortably buttoned up over a medium weight sweater but it does not button up over a top + blazer. I probably should've considered trying a size up, but by the time I received it most sizes were gone and I was in love with how well the shoulders and arms fit. With a blazer I wear a thick scarf down the center to make up for the jacket being open.

Hi there – thank you for your kind comment, I'm so happy to hear that! I wrote a very old post experimenting with dress/skirt length here: https://www.extrapetite.com/2010/05/finding-your-ideal-skirt-length.html I personally like wearing dresses/skirts of various lengths ranging from mini, to above the knee, knee, and even below the knee. it's all about balancing it out with either elongating high heels, tights, etc.

Hi Millie – I'm so glad to hear you like the plaid scarf! I'm disappointed to hear what you're describing for the Gap legging jeans and wonder if they've significantly changed the design since the two pairs I own from 2 and 3 years ago. I definitely wear mine with flats, and I machine wash and dry mine (they do shrink a little in the dryer to be cautious of them getting shorter). Perhaps try LOFT modern skinny jeans which I reviewed recently and was pleasantly surprised by – very similar to how my old Gap ones fit.

Hello – it's from the Hermes store and is the orange color reversing to dark brown. I don't remember what size I got, but they re-sized it and the number is no longer printed on there because it got cut off. I got a longer one so i could wear it at my hips.

Hi Jean! I just found your blog yesterday and have been browsing on it ever since. I am a bit clueless when it comes to fashion, but thanks to you, I can buy clothes and shoes with confidence now. I just have one question: do petites should always wear dresses that hit at least 2 inches above the knees? I just bought a sweater dress from gap but it hits 1 inch above my knee. Thanks!

I love Lou & Grey! I got one of the pop overs also as well a pair of their leggings and a pair of joggers. I didn't realize they had a separate store, I always find their pieces at my usual Loft (NYC). Thanks so much for the updates on your favorite finds! You take the work out for us readers who are looking for similar pieces 🙂 I recently got the Asos plaid scarf and am obsessed with how soft and pretty it is. I also bought the Gap legging jeans. However, skinny jeans are usually very snug around the ankles and I feel like these are big around the ankles. I don't know how to wear them now as I think they look like high waters? For reference, I'm 5'1. Do you always fold the bottoms as you did in the pic with the booties or do you think they can be worn with flats? Also do you dry them? They have A LOT of stretch, I'm thinking of sizing down…

My mom was there yesterday too, and she called last night to tell me about the new store she'd discovered! I grew up in Natick (pre-mall). I would say that I wish I'd known you were there too but then she would have talked your ear off, and your photos never would have gotten taken 🙂 In all seriousness, I'm so glad you posted these because I had a hard time envisioning what lots of their clothes would look like ON, so this was immensely helpful. I'll have to go give the Natick store a visit when I'm out visiting my mom with the baby!

I haven't been wowed by the Lou & Grey stuff when browsing online, but I can see in your closeup photo that the textures of the materials are what make them more unique. I'll definitely have to scrutinize these items more closely in person! 🙂

Nice review! I noticed their new line a few months back and rather like it–though it's plagued with the same loose waistlines I see all over AT/Loft. I wish they would cinch them in a bit, because i feel like everything I try on there looks like a bag. That said, the tshirt dress (with scarf) looks amazing on you, though particularly more when you're sitting as the waist looks more defined.
