Winter blues: Knit cap + wool plaid

knit cap wool plaid1

Burberry coat (altered, old), Hunter boots from Nordstrom Rack, J.Brand jeans
Longchamp Planetes tote, H&M; gloves, North Face beanie (similar in winter white)

Just popping in during a busy work month to say a quick hello! Some of my oldest coats (this one’s from 2009) have been seeing more wear than ever this year, since they happen to be my thickest ones. I’m also rarely in a knit hat, but couldn’t resist after Nick left behind his favorite one on a cold day. I figured if I have to share our tiny closet, I might as well make use of what I can (like here!).

Beanies are warm and cozy for this weather we’ve been having, but I’ve stayed away in the past due to frightfully static hair that’s only worsened by fuzzy knits. To combat this problem, I used to keep dryer sheets in my bag (works, but may leave questionable white specks on dark hair) but now carry a travel-sized bottle of leave-in conditioner. My hairdresser gifted me this “It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Spray” after witnessing my lion mane on an especially dry day. I disregard the spray hose, and just open the bottle to smooth a tiny bit on with my fingers. It’s been working post-hats or post-turtleneck sweaters like a charm.

In love with the hues in this paring! On a unrelated note, what size did you get in the Kate Spade Bronze Pumps? Enjoy the rest of your week, Jean!

I really like coats with special details like the side zipper. You look quite cozy 🙂

That beanie is so beautiful on you! I have the problemen that my hair always looks super flat when I wear a beanie. Your hair always looks so amazing, may I ask how you curl it and how you make the curls last?

Yaaay, another cute outfit with low heeled shoes! I have a question about the boots. My friend (who is always very well dressed…almost as well as you but not quite :P) had the same boots in green and she looked absolutely adorable in them. Trouble was, she always struggled to get them off. I felt like I was backstage at a fashion show and seeing something that was not meant for my eyes…do you have any tips or tricks for getting them off easily? Or do you not have that problem?

Love this coat paired with the gloves

I love those purple leather gloves, but always have a difficult time finding ones that fit my hands. I usually have to get the stretchy kids kind. Do you have the same issue? If so, were these H&M; gloves ladies or kids? Any other places where I could find leather gloves?

I love the knit hat. It's a gorgeous shade for a cosy winter feel. I wonder how easy it would be to knit it myself.. the whole ensemble is so comforting for the gloomy weather we've been having lately!

Great winter look– that coat is beautiful.

I love the combination of a blue coat with purple gloves! That gives me an outfit idea and a way to use a pair of purple gloves I haven't been able to match yet with anything. Thanks!

Hi Jean! Love your blog! This is not related to this post, but thought I'd share. For quite some time now, I've been trying to find a white jacket that you have (you wore it over the Marshalls striped maxi dress a year ago or so) and have finally found one that is perfect. It's Loft – the link is below. And the fit is perfect for petite frame (I'm 5'1). Thought I'd share in case some of your other followers were also looking for this jacket :). thanks! Hi Jean!

How are you dressing during the polar vortex?

Hi Jean! Do you know the shaft length on those boots? I really like their height and I'm about your height and have been looking for boots for some time that land just below the knee. Thanks!

Your hair is awesome in this post, what did u do?

  • Reply Janki January 30, 2014 at 3:14 pm

You need to do another color theory video, like you did with the styling of the red skirt. This outfit shows how to pick up on similar tones, related colors etc without being too "matchy matchy". I still struggle with the tonal aspect, thought finally get the related colors.

Your hair looks so beautiful here Jean!

  • Reply Sue January 30, 2014 at 4:33 pm

Hey, thanks for the tip using the leave-in spray. I never thought about that before. 🙂

  • Reply Anonymous January 30, 2014 at 5:17 pm

My hairstylist also recommended "Its a 10", but after looking at the ingredients, it has lots of bad stuff (parabens, etc.) so I guess I will deal with the frizz!!

oh wow good to know! i considered purchasing this spray. thank you for sharing.

You look so cute! I love the hat and your jacket!

Hi Jaqueline! Thank you! I got size 5.5. They felt slightly loose at first but I inserted ball of foot pads which filled the gap. I usually wear 5 to 5.5. and go with the bigger size for pointy-toed shoes to avoid any toe pinching.

Hi Sara, thank you! I followed my friend Ping's tutorial here: I think curling on 1-2 day old (vs just washed) hair helps hold the curls. I didn't use hairspray or any holding products here.

The taller and the more fitted the boot (and the thicker your liner socks), the more that becomes a problem, unfortunately. Some women size up half a size for their rainboots which may prevent that problem. I was stuck…really stuck… once in these boots after using the thick fleece liner socks, so now just wear very thin tall socks to facilitate slipping in & out!

Hi Ashley – finding leather gloves that fit short fingers feels like impossible! These are about half an inch long on most fingers. A reader once provided a tip to stuff them with half cottonballs…which is interesting since I've always thought about altering items down to fit vs. stuffing to just make the extra space appear less obvious. Maybe give that a try? Other than that, nothing wrong with the stretchy knit gloves!

Looks like a perfect dupe for that blazer! That's awesome you found it in your size…looks like sizes are pretty much gone now with the online sale.

  • Reply Jean January 31, 2014 at 1:38 am

    You too!

Hi Wendy! These are 13.75" excluding the wedge.

Hi there – exactly as shown here, except maybe with a big scarf. I'm lucky to have a short walk outdoors between home, train, and work. Hope you're layering up and staying warm!

  • Reply Jean January 31, 2014 at 1:43 am

Janki – I totally struggle with the same, but in the end fashion is not a science : ) I hope you and your family have been well!

I noticed that you usually wear Fall-looking coats. Do you own any winter coats, and by winter coats, I mean those bubble-looking ones?

  • Reply Suzie Q February 1, 2014 at 8:22 pm

Love this look, especially the coat! I do the dryer sheets for staticky skirts, but I never thought to do it on hair (which is also a big problem for me too during wintertime!). Don't know what I would do without leave-in conditioner in the winter!

Hello – I own several winter wool coats (including the one shown here) but do not own any down-filled ones if that's what you're referring to. I've lived in the northeast most of my life and wool coats have served me well. I don't find down-filled coats to be warmer or more comfortable, but it's personal preference!
