5 ways to style the most classic summer Skirt

how to style a white cotton midi skirt petite

Year after year, a piece that I look forward to breaking out each summer is a crisp white cotton skirt. I got one 7 years ago that I adored, before it unfortunately met its fate with a large permanent stain. This type of skirt has been having a big moment this summer (love when classic items become “on trend”) , so I’ve been hell bent on finding a good replacement!

After striking out on several in terms of fit and quality, I came across this one from a new-to-me brand . I didn’t know what to expect in terms of sizing and quality, but the skirt turned out to be everything I’ve been searching for. It’s fully stocked, so don’t sleep on this one!

Update: small sizes are running low, so wanted to share a similar white skirt under $45 that looks promising! Vineyard Vines also makes another white midi skirt that looks very similar in structure & fit with eyelet lace details.

  • Pockets!
  • Fabric: 98% cotton, 2% spandex has the right amount of crispness and shape with a touch of stretch.
  • Lined in a lightweight cotton material. Website says unlined, so this was a pleasant surprise.
  • Tailored yet comfy. Flat front waistband, side zipper, and subtly elasticized back waistband.
  • Sizing: TTS. XXS is fitted at my waist, measuring 12″ across the waistband when un-stretched.
  • Length: 29″ elegant midi length that I can wear with flats or heels. With my tastes shifting quite a bit to longer lengths, I like this one much more than my older skirt.
  • Versatility: this is one of those pieces that I can easily come up with 10 ways to style using basics already in my wardrobe, for casual to workwear!

Below are a few ways to style, and you can see some of these looks in motion in this video:

look 1: elevated daytime

I’ve been obsessed with this combo, which pairs a little menswear via the vest with a little feminine via the Mary Janes and full skirt. The similar vest linked is another slim-fit option in a knit fabric. Love the higher neckline and split bottom on that one!

As a vest alternative, here’s a few non-boring black tops I own and love that look great tucked into this skirt:

look 2: polished Evening

Formula: sleek eye-catching top + minimal strappy heels + small handbag

I’ve been searching for cream minimal sandals and have been very happy with these so far! They didn’t require breaking in and the low kitten heel is easy to walk in. See this recent outfit where I paired the exact same top, sandals, and handbag with jeans for a different look.

look 3: OFFICE-READY

Sézane shirt 0/32, Gucci heels 5.5 (also here), The Daily Edited bag, Amazon sunglasses in vidoe

Formula: Button-up shirt + slingbacks

For a more business vibe, this skirt looks chic with almost any button-up shirt I’ve tried, including oxford blue, striped, linen, and more. For a more professional look, I’d tuck the shirt in all the way around instead of knotting it at the waist.

look 4: Smart Casual

COS tee xs (a few colors at Nordstrom), Madewell sweater xs, Naghedi tote, Edited Pieces flats (very similar), sunglasses, Vineyard Vines skirt xxs

Formula: Stripe tee + linen sweater + cap toe flats

This COS clean cut tee is a premium quality, thicker cotton tee with structure. I am usually xxs, but sized up to xs for the look I wanted. I’ve purchased this tee in several colors and noticed each color differs in fabric feel – this striped one is a little more structured, while the off white color (“light beige”) is super soft!

I also love a lightweight, open weave sweater for summer layering, and Madewell has a good one right now in this neutral linen + a pretty dusty blue – I took XS for a relaxed fit.

Look 5: Effortlessly Casual

Madewell top xs (slim fit w/ bigger armholes; also in black; ), Sezane tote bag c/o + gold sandals 6

Formula: lightweight knit top + flat sandals + straw tote

An oversized straw tote with a skirt like this lends an effortless “south of France” countryside vibe!

The skirts straight hem is unbecoming. The tops are nice purses as well. The shoes do not fit the occasion

Fav look: 5. The Madewell top is a versatile and very affordable and looks great with the skirt…or with jeans..or white or black slacks. But the gold sandals finished the look just perfectly!

Thank you Anne! I’ve been so pleasantly surprised at how much the gold sandals work with, they’ve become like a neutral for me but add a special extra pop.
