One of the pieces I’ve enjoyed wearing the most this year has actually been this older closet item – a simple slip skirt that I now have in both black and “silver cloud.” Although I’ve owned mine for a while, I didn’t always embrace the longer length on me as much as I have been this year! It’s just such an easy piece that feels elevated, and versatile for so many different occasions. In the Fall I loved wearing it simply with sneakers and a bodysuit tee (as seen here), and wanted to share some colder weather ways to style it!
See the bottom of this blog post for sizing info and a comparison with my Quince silk skirt.
1. Lunch Date / Meeting
I absolutely love this simple, warm and chic outfit idea that can also easily work for an office setting too. My sweater is old, but I also own this cozy Quince sweater that has a pretty similar shape with slightly less voluminous sleeves.
If you’re not a tall boot person, swap in dark tights and ankle boots as shown below in outfit idea #4. These are the Steve Madden suede boots that I included in last week’s sale roundups and fit me decently in size 5 – I like the classic, elongating cut and and am debating whether to exchange for the black!
2. Weekend Casual
Being very short, I was initially wary of wearing a skirt this length with sneakers or flats. But as a busy mom now I frankly don’t quite care as much about the “ideal proportions,” and value comfort and ease above all!
3. Dressy Dinner or Holiday Party
I love how easy it is to dress up a skirt like this with either a cami, interesting top, or even a relaxed sweater for a cozy glam look. I kept things monochromatic here and added festive elements with this twist neckline and embellished heels.
4. Cold Weather Workwear
If you’re not fully comfortable with a midi length, an easy way to elongate the bottom half and not truncate the leg line is to add similar colored tights and shoes. This is also an easy-to-recreate way to wear the Gentle Souls suede ankle booties that many of you have been liking. The boots are now hard to find in stock but this post should have all the retailers where it’s still available.
Quince vs The Drop Skirt
Since I’ve owned both the Quince slip skirt and The Drop skirt for over a year, I wanted to do a quick updated review. The Quince is 100% silk and The Drop is poly, so if material content is important to you then the Quince is a better, more luxurious buy. While the Quince skirt IS a lovely value and the Champagne color is *chef’s kiss,* I have to say I probably reach for The Drop more due to its dark color and slightly thicker fabric weight that’s a little less clingy on me. I also don’t hesitate to machine wash The Drop skirt whereas I care for the Quince one more carefully.
Sizing wise, I own the Drop XXS and the Quince XS which pretty much fit the same. Both measure: 12.5″ across the waist (elastic), 28 to 29″ in length.
Can you please style the champagne colored skirt? I am at a loss how to wear it casually/ or for work?
The blazer is on super sale and I got another 25% and it was nearly $30.
This outfit is giving me major fashion envy! The attention to detail and the way you’ve accessorized is simply stunning.
Thank you so much Aurora!
Hi Jean! Do you wear a slip under the skirt? I find satin so unforgiving with lumps and bumps.
Hi Emily, I completely understand! I’ve found that black slip skirts are most forgiving for this reason. I wear the Uniqlo Shaper Shorts under mine, highly recommend!
Do you know how the Baby Alpaca-Wool Turtleneck (the alternative you gave for your old sweater) from Quince fits?
Yes I have it! It fits TTS and is petite friendly for me if I fold up the sleeve cuffs. The sleeves don’t balloon as much as the old sweater I have on in this blog post, just a subtle puff shape.
Thank you for another wonderful post full of ideas and inspiration! May I ask if the black slip skirt gets wrinkled when you sit down? I love those skirts but sometimes find them impractical as they can be difficult to keep neat and wrinkle free….
Hi Sophie, I’m glad you find the post helpful! This one doesn’t wrinkle much for me at all! Also since it’s black, any wrinkles may also just not be very noticeable.
