Exploring Paia, Hawaii // Cognac sandals + scalloped skirt

Aloha from Maui! It's my first time visiting, and I have to say, those on the West coast are lucky to be just a direct flight away from this beautiful island! We've researched a lot of the popular tourist activities here, but do let us know if there's any local favorites or spots off the beaten path that you'd recommend. We're splitting our stay between an apartment rental and the more typical resorts, in hopes of seeing the island from multiple perspectives. I've been snapping daily videos on my Instagram stories (each are viewable for 24 hours), so join me there! maui hawaii surfboards extra petite fashion blog
Our adorable apartment is about a 10-minute walk from Paia town center, so we've enjoyed strolling in and out for eats and to check out the boutiques. The Sole Society Savannah sandals that I've mentioned several times finally arrived, in time to come exploring with me on this trip! Like I had hoped, the low and stable block heels were comfortable for walking around, and these did not require breaking-in on me. The cognac is a true medium brown, and the new taupe color just got stocked today (small sizes have been going quickly on this style)! Depending on your skin tone, it might be a more flattering neutral.

Size-wise, I'm usually between a 5 and 5.5 and ordered both to try on. I honestly didn't feel too much of a difference, so kept the 5s and would say these are true to size. The leather straps should stretch a little with wear to your feet width. One thing I noticed about these is they have a tiny bit of a "bumper" in the front where the harder stacked sole exceeds the insoles, which can help protect the leather at the front from scuffing off (I always, always stub my toes and ruin the tips of my shoes!).

I'm partnering with Sole Society to also share some new arrival accessories, including this straw hat and tassel clutch which are cute for vacation outfits. This Palisades clutch (comes in 4 colors) is made of a thick, woven material with additional patterned detail made of balled yarn on the front side only. It's also listed as a case for your tablet or a makeup pouch! Note it's a soft clutch, so your items inside are what will give it some structure. I decided to really play up the chartreuse color by pairing it with my bright scalloped skirt (waist runs small, FYI!) and lemon print blouse.

Thank you to Sole Society for partnering on this post.

  4. You picked a great place to vacation! Love love these pics! You look so cute in that outfit, and I love the beautiful location! I love how much slower the pace is in Hawaii - so relaxing! Would love to know more about the rental as I have only visited Oahu and the Big Island. Enjoy the island!!

  11. Hi Jean, such a cute outfit! I was wondering if you could comment a little bit more about the skirt you're wearing. How would you describe the fabric? Is it wrinkle prone? Is it thick? or do panty lines easily show? I'm considering purchasing it in the mint green. Thank you!

    1. Hi Serena - hmm. I think the fabric is a poly material typical of ASOS items. It's smooth and isn't a wrinkle magnet, but it does require some ironing and flat packing in the suitcase. Panty lines do not show for me since there's a lining. Hope that helps!

    2. Okay it's true everyone loves guriguri, but I don't like it that much. Everyone also loves to stop at Krispy Kreme, and I'm not a fan of that either. I'd like to try the bakery in Makawao though which is another local must do.

  15. We just returned from Maui. You'll want to visit Leoda's Kitchen and Pies and Lahaina Luna Cafe for delicious and homemade food. Also, a helicopter ride on Blue Hawaiian will take your breath away. If you're in Paia - visit Mama's Fish Kitchen. It was on our list but we ran out of time!

    2. I've been interested in Wailuku and Makawao lately. There are a few cool looking historic inn type places on the island. Highlights of the past for me include day trip to Molokai or Lanai via ferry although I'm not sure you can still do that, whale watching off Lahaina (seasonal), and volunteering on a service trip into Haleakala. Road to Hana of course is a must do. I'm curious about where Georgia Okeeffe stayed out there on her trip to the islands. I'd also like to check out the Kahanu (?) garden where there is a breadfruit collection. I'm looking forward to reading about your trip in the latest posts! Your hair looks AMAZING. I would love some tips on how to get a good cut. I keep getting overtexturized, and have pretty much accepted I'll be wearing ponytails and investing in hats for a long time.

  24. TInroof for lunch, it's Chef Sheldon Simeon from Top Chef's restaurant.
Tamura's for the best poke! It's a liquor store but they have a poke counter in the back.
Merriman's in Kapalua is delicious, they have a great HH from 3-6 I believe. Best Mai Tais in town with a great Lilikoi foam on top. It is right next to Cliff House where you can jump into the ocean (about 10 ft cliffs).
A truly locals spot I found was Fairy Land- it is about a 2 mile hike with a great secluded waterfall!
    Have fun! I love Maui.

  28. I love Maui! I saw you did the road to Hana. :) I would also recommend checking out Haleakala (the volcano) and Nakalele blow hole. It's also fun to take surfing or paddle boarding lessons since the water is so warm. We did a snorkel excursion out to Molokini which was fun, too! There's so much to do!

  29. We drove through Paia town last year and plan to explore it this year,( in 11 days)! Have you tried Mama's? Maui is amazing!
I'm a size 5 shoe, but my foot is a little wider on top. Are the straps roomy or tight? Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Jean,
I love the tank and are the straps of the shoes snug? My feet are a bit wider and the straps are always tight.
Last year we visited Maui and we will be there again in 11 days!! We stayed at Sheraton in kannapali beach ( not to be missed). This year we are staying in wailea at the grand wailea. Definitely try mamas fish house which is close to you in Pa'ia town. Leodas has amazing breakfast, lunch, pie. On way to kannapali. We did road to hana, Haleakala, old Lahaina luau, paddle boarding. We could not fit it all in, so we are coming back to try:) we are also from east coast and will be trekking the 9 hour flight with toddler! Wish us luck! Enjoy!!

    Replies
    1. Hi Lauren - the straps are not roomy, but I feel like they will stretch a bit with wear since real leather usually does.

You're a pro for doing the flight with a toddler! I'm envious of 9 hours though...couldn't find anything less than 12 or 13 from Boston. I definitely feel the same way about there being SO much to do here that will have to be enjoyed on a second trip. Did the road this week and had Mama's earlier. Hope you and your family have an amazing trip : )

  38. Aloha Jean! Welcome to Maui! I am a Maui girl, born and raised, and enjoy reading your posts for wonderful sizing tips and introductions to different brands. Our shopping options are limited in the islands, so I appreciate brands offering free shipping and returns. I also refer to you for what to wear when traveling to the mainland and abroad (unfortunately, I can’t wear t-shirts and flip flops everywhere).
Our favorite thing to do when exploring a new place is eating, especially where the locals frequent. Here are a few of our faves: Flatbread Pizza (Paia); Kula Bistro (Kula); La Provence for breakfast (Kula); Tamura’s for poke & liquor (Kahului, Wailuku, Lahaina); Tiffany’s Bar & Grill (Wailuku); Coconuts (Kihei); Koiso Sushi (Kihei – reservations required); Gazebo (Napili); Ululani’s Shave Ice (Kahului, Wailuku, Lahaina). I’d be happy to provide specific menu recommendations or other local knowledge.
Maybe I’ll bump into you dining out or at the beach. Enjoy your stay! Maui No Ka Oi!

  39. Hi Jean,

Need your help ASAP!!! I've never purchased from ASOS and am about to purchase an ASOS petite dress from Poshmark. In your opinion, do they run true to size or do they run a bit small like H&M? Or does it fit more like Banana Republic petite? I'm a size 4 sometimes 6 at H&M and a size 2P at Banana Republic. I'm trying to comparing sizing because the dress I'm looking at is an ASOS 4 petite and the seller said it's slim fitting. I'm not sure what that mean. I'd really appreciate your opinion. :)
