Spring Refresh with Trunk Club

I was recently asked to try Trunk Club‘s newer women’s styling service, and wanted to share my experience as someone who usually spends more time shopping due to fit challenges. I get daily messages from ladies requesting help with their shopping needs (ranging from picking out special occasion outfits, to helping with building an everyday wardrobe) – I am not a personal shopper myself, but think Trunk Club’s free service would be perfect for someone who is short on time or would like professional styling. After signing up online, I was matched with a stylist, Zoey, who reached out to chat about my style, body type, measurements, as well as anything either in general or in particular (ie. events or trips) that I was currently shopping for. I mentioned I generally love to mix high end + low end, and stressed the importance of fit on my shorter frame. I told her I’d love to see a mix of both classic and trendy pieces for a refresh on spring wardrobe basics.
trunk club womens spring outfitsUpon opening my first trunk which arrived on my doorstep in a few days, I could tell Zoey took everything I said into consideration. There was a range of price points and pieces (along with mix-and-match pairing suggestions!) from classics like Equipment silk blouses and Rag & Bone jeans, to fast fashion items from Topshop and smaller labels I hadn’t seen before. What I especially appreciated was the range of sizing in my trunk (in both regular and petites) based on what Zoey knew about certain brands and specific pieces running bigger or smaller, longer or shorter – taking the guesswork out of gauging size when shopping online. After receiving a trunk, you get 10 days to try on your items at home and only pay for what you want to keep, with free shipping both ways. There is no stylist fee, and it’s not a subscription service so you only request a trunk from your stylist whenever you want one.

Here are some of the items I tried on from my trunk, including a Topshop striped tee, Paige jeans, and Joie jacket – all in a range of sizing that each fit my frame well:

Trying on a few more pieces from my trunk – I had asked for classic denim short options that were casual but at a modest length with cuffs:

My favorite piece in my trunk has to be a pair of Rag & Bone jeans (worn below) that I likely would’ve never found on my own. The stock photo for this style & wash looks very different online, but in-person it’s a weathered vintage blue wash that I strive for when denim shopping (and had mentioned to my stylist). They are actually labeled capris but Zoey guessed they’d fit my shorter legs perfectly as regular jeans, and she was spot-on about that down to the distressing placement.

For those who live in NYC, Dallas, Chicago, LA or DC, Trunk Club also has physical clubhouse locations where you can set up a time to try on all the items your stylist pulled for you in-person. Something that I thought was really awesome is they offer free basic alterations on items you decide to purchase at your sessions. Thank you to Trunk Club for partnering on this post!

Everything looks so cute on you! Did you wind up keeping anything else besides the jeans?

Hmm I just may need to try Trunk Club here in Chi! Do you mind sharing the brand & style name of denim shorts you're wearing? They look like exactly what I want. You look great in all those pieces!

All of the styles that your stylist put together looks really good together. I've heard of the Trunk Club (first from my fiance, if you can believe that!) and it's been on my radar since then. Glad to read that you had a good experience.

What a neat concept with solid brands and pieces! I love that there's no subscription commitment. Zoey did well!

I used Trunk Club this fall and really disliked it. I found the woman who helped me to be incredibly pushy – once I sent a box back, she immediately sent a new box without taking my feedback (or desire for a new box) into account. Furthermore, I specifically requested colorful items, since I always wear black/grey/white, and she consistently sent me… black/grey/white items. I was disappointed with the overall experience.

I love all of these pieces but my favorite are the jeans and the bright yellow/green top!

I've noticed you've mentioned Equipment blouses before. I love the feel of those blouses, but they are way too big (and I'm a similar size as you). How do you make those blouses work for you? Do you get them tailored? Thanks!

Thanks for sharing- I've tried Stitch a fix a few times with mixed results. I had never heard of Trunk Club before your post – thank you for sharing, I will def try it. Can you tell me the specifics of the striped off the shoulder top? That is adorable! I would love to try it on. Thanks!

I think the jean shorts are Paige. It looks like the tag says so 😉

  • Nicole Giaquinto April 11, 2016 at 8:14 pm

After a bit of research and a reply back from @trunkclub the striped shirt is from topshop.

  • Nicole Giaquinto April 11, 2016 at 8:14 pm

How do you get your polish to stay looking good? My Essie polish chips after a day!

  • Anonymous April 11, 2016 at 9:11 pm

Did you speak up about your dislike/the things that were bothering you? She may have just been trying to be proactive; but didn't know it was off-putting.

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:18 pm

I only purchased the jeans this time, but I was impressed by the fit and style of the other items selected!

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:20 pm

Hi! The brand was Paige but unfortunately I can't find the style name – sorry!

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:20 pm

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:20 pm

    Hi! I use a Canon 6D and a 50mm 1.4 lens in this post

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:21 pm

    Murray capris

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:21 pm

    Thanks! It's by Topshop

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:25 pm

I'm sorry to hear that! I've worked with a few stylists before (from different companies) and have learned to be very assertive about what I like and about giving feedback. I hope the stylist you got is in the minority since I would be disappointed about that too. Also, not sure if you had the option last year, but now there is an online preview of items from your stylist before they get shipped out, so you can reject or provide feedback prior to each box shipping.

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:26 pm

They definitely are a roomy fit so I wear mine mostly casually. I got the sleeves shortened on this one, but also have another one that I just wear with the sleeves double cuffed up.

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:26 pm

Sure – it is by Topshop!

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:27 pm

Hi Jackie! They are Paige but unfortunately I forgot to note down the style name : /

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:27 pm

You have a great memory! Thanks for helping answer : )

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:28 pm

Hi Nicole – it's Topshop and was a 2P (still a little small for my liking these days!)

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:46 pm

Hello – the link doesn't work, but in general Zara does not make small shoe sizes while a lot of other brands do, so I really wouldn't suggest buying shoes there when there are other options out there in smaller sizing! Nordstrom carries several brands down to a size 4 and then there are specialty brands that make down to sizes 2 or 3. There isn't any good way to reduce space in open sandals that I know of unfortunately, because your foot is exposed.

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:47 pm

Hi there – everyone's body and metabolism is different and I'm not a nutritionist, so I'm not the best person to share that info!

  • Jean April 11, 2016 at 10:50 pm

I usually splurge on the gel / shellac at the nail salon whenever I don't do my own nails at home (wearing gel again here). It is more costly but it sets almost instantly and does not chip no matter what you do to your nails…so in the end I feel I do save $ and time.

  • Pamela Gonzalez April 11, 2016 at 11:03 pm

    This is so cool!
Love the shade of green of the first top, suits you so well!♥

  • Nicole Giaquinto April 12, 2016 at 7:07 am

Awesome that actually makes me feel better. I splurge every so often for the salon shellac, but figured I'd try some of the beautiful Essie options seen on your blog. At least I won't feel as bad now if mine look a lil less perfect.

  • Nicole Giaquinto April 12, 2016 at 7:11 am

Perfect thank you! I'll definitely size up then. I'm so glad I asked. Thisbisnine thingbyjaybsetsbyiir blog up from all others out there. Since you disclose all of your sizing and explain the type of fit I'm able to buy accordingly. Abhugebtine saver…so thank you!

  • Lindsey Churchill April 12, 2016 at 1:03 pm

Hi Jean! I actually tried the DC Trunk Club location last month and didn't love it. I was informed that they source their women's items entirely from Nordstrom and when I told the stylist my price range and style/color preferences, she kept bringing me things in the $400 range (for one shirt!) and colors I specifically told her I disliked. I'm glad to see you had a good home delivery experience so I've decided to give it another shot. Thank you SO much for being such an awesome fashion inspiration.

Absolutely love your lime green blouse!! Perfect for spring!

  • Emily Kate Farina April 12, 2016 at 8:26 pm

I have used Trunk Club, they are such a time saver and great service! I loved being able to get such personalized shopping service without the cost of a personal shopper. I got new items I may not have picked out on my own but ended up loving. I especially love that lime Equipment blouse, looks great with the faded/ripped jeans. I may have to steal that look for this spring!

  • Anonymous April 12, 2016 at 11:44 pm

great post! Love the green top, Equipment blouses tend to be so long, just wondering if you had the length of your tailored? And is this the slim fit?

  • Morgan April 16, 2016 at 9:57 pm

I tried trunk club and did not have a great experience. First box, nothing fit. They abruptly switched me from my first stylist to a new stylist who did not select items that fit me. She included brands that were totally off-base for my style like Cupcakes and Cashmere, which is a little too juvenile for me. She also put items in like high-heels and jeans, which I specifically requested to be excluded from the box. I'm somewhat disappointed to hear that you found items that actually fit you because between my two stylists could not find items that fit. Sorry Trunk Club, you lost a customer.

  • Anne April 28, 2016 at 1:15 pm

I love your style! I have never brought anything from Ann Taylor before so can you please tell me your size?

  • Haley May 18, 2016 at 6:14 pm

    Hi Jean,

Would you be able to tell me where you got the lime equipment blouse? It looks gorgeous!

    Thank you!

  • --- July 22, 2016 at 12:16 am

Hi Jean! I'm thinking of buying a pair of the Murray capris but I find when I purchase jeans in my usual size, they end up stretching and become so loose during the day that it doesn't maintain its shape. What is your experience with these jeans?
