Casual classics in Hong Kong

casual travel outfit madewell tee white jeans gray goyard st louis

J.Brand crop jeans sz 24 in demented, Madewell pocket tee xs, Thierry Lasry sunglasses, Soludos espadrilles sz 5, Goyard St Louis PM tote, H&M; denim jacket,Baublebar mother of pearl necklace (sold out; very similar)

Hello from Hong Kong! Nick and I are here for a few short days visiting family, snapping our way around the city as we explore. This is one of my super casual tourist outfits for strolling around, comprised of simple yet classic pieces. The denim jacket around the waist not only serves as a backup layer for places with chilly AC blasting, but also adds interest to the outfit, and bonus – protects the bottom of white jeans from getting dirty when you sit down!
j brand white jeans outfit thierry lasry lively tortoise sunglassesSince white jeans have proven to be so versatile in my wardrobe year-round, I wanted another pair (my basic white skinnies have been these Article of Society ones) but with distressing. I love a thicker white denim, skinny fit and with minimal sheerness. I probably tried on no less than a dozen options, and found two styles at Nordstrom that were good quality and fit the bill. As a bonus, they are both ankle or cropped styles so no hemming even needed!

The material on these J.Brands has that thicker denim with good “hold” that I look for in higher-end denim. The distressing is almost patched on and feels sturdy, not like my knees will bust through it after just a few wears. Other potentially petite-friendly similar white jeans include these J.Brand distressed skinny jeans in a 27″ inseam and these AG The Legging cutoffs with a 27.5″ inseam, both of which I haven’t tried personally.

The other style I tried on and liked were these Hudson ankle jeans. A few notable differences between these and the J.Brand ones: In comparison, Hudson’s length is about an inch longer, bottoms are frayed hem, there are slightly more distressing patches throughout the jeans, the rise is a little higher at mid-rise, and the back pockets are bigger.

Leaving you guys with a little story from behind the scenes of this post…while shooting this outfit yesterday amongst throngs of people on a busy street of Hong Kong, a ruggedly handsome British man approached us to introduce himself (also a Nick!). I’ve been so into my Soludos shoes lately, so imagine my gleeful reaction when he said he’s the founder of the brand! He was staying at our hotel and just happened to spot their striped espadrilles on my feet. We ended up chatting for quite a bit about the styles and my fit & comfort feedback which Nick said he appreciates hearing – love a company that listens to customers with open ears!

Wow, what a magical story! You've been raving about these Soludos shoes too! And to run into the founder of them in Hong Kong, so random and crazy! It's just like how you use to rave about Loft/AT for years on your blog, and then suddenly we saw you on their NYC billboard as their petite model…crazy fortune! You are special, Jean 🙂 And loving the snippets of your trip on snapchat! You and Nick are hilarious! You guys should have your own reality show, haha!

Loving the tip for tying a jacket around the waist when wearing white jeans – I've just picked up a pair so I'll have to remember that! I love this casual look and those Soludus espadrilles look so comfy but chic!

I'm loving your casual travel look. Great tip on the jean jacket keeping your white jeans clean when you sit – never thought of that. Also thought it was so awesome seeing your snaps about meeting the founder of Soludos! Really enjoying your snaps and IG posts. Hope you have a great and safe remainder of your trip!

What is the sizing difference between the xxs and xs of this Madewell tee? I'm debating which size would be best to order.

I love your simple outfit! I always love wearing basic pieces that are perfect for everyday wear. I used to live in Shanghai, China a few years ago and one of the cities I visited was Hong Kong (also for family) and I just love the way the streets are…horrible for walk 😛 I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week!

Love the outfit and the story! I've been eyeing both pairs of Soludos you have. Just struggling in size as I don't have any available locally to try in store.

Question for you regarding the striped Soludos. I'm struggling in what I would wear them with. I find that you have made them seem very versatile, but wasn't sure if you had a rule of thumb of pairing the stripes with particular outfits. Also, how do you conceal the bow/tie when wearing them with jeans?

  • Serein April 25, 2016 at 4:49 pm

Hi Jean! This is probably the oddest question, but may I ask what bra (brand and style) you were wearing in the ig pic where you were standing in a dress with a glass of wine? Thanks!

    Thierry Lasry "lively" style

  • Jean April 29, 2016 at 4:36 pm

I got the xs for a slouchier fit, also because the cotton shrinks a little in the machine dryer. The neckline is lower cut as the sizing goes up.

  • Jean April 29, 2016 at 4:38 pm

Hi Nicole – stripes are almost like a neutral, so I suggest not overthinking it! You could wear them with almost any outfit made of solid colors (like jeans + a tee) or even if you're wearing other patterns that don't conflict with the stripes. The bow tie just tucks under my jeans, but I wouldn't worry about concealing them since they look cute when exposed.

Just a regular bra, but I safety-pinned the bra straps to the camisole straps. It's a Calvin Klein wireless bra I mentioned in a prior post.

I found the perfect pair of white jeans last month…The AG Stevie Ankle Whites are perfect, love the texture (not rough denim) and the fit is great without the flesh sheerness that I can't seem to shake off other brands. Try them out!

  • Lindy May 2, 2016 at 4:47 am

I read your blog regularly and hear you rave about the Sloan Pants and the Articles of Society jeans. I had no idea they would fit me as well as they did. I'm 5'2" and 103 lbs with muscular thighs. A few months ago, I found a pr of Navy Sloan Pants in a 0P at BR for less than $20 and snatched them up. OMG they fit perfectly. Now today, I needed a pr of sand or stone colored pants for a volunteer post. I went to Off 5th and tried on 10 pairs with nothing to my liking. Then it was 2 doors down to Nordstrom's Rack. The only thing I found remotely close was a lonely pair Articles of Society skinnies in my size for $29.95. Oh, it fit like butter except the length. I washed and dried them hoping to shrink them a bit. I can't wait to wear them. Thanks for the great tips!

  • Patty May 10, 2016 at 12:21 am

Hi Jean, how comfortable are the stripped espadrilles? I was about to order them, but after reading the last reviews, I'm not so sure anymore. I like my shoes to be wide enough in the toe area. Would love to have your input before ordering them. Thank you in advance!

  • viviendinh June 27, 2016 at 11:15 pm

Hi Jean, do your soludos run true to size?

  • Kat July 16, 2016 at 1:53 pm

Love the Madewell pocket tee, it's the perfect basic tee shirt, so comfy and cute too. Thanks for suggesting it!
