San Diego: Wedding at Stone Brewery

Hello from the sunny West coast! We had a blast at the wedding of Mike & Kelly, whom we initially met through blogging and have gotten to know well over several years. As a craft beer enthusiast, Nick’s eyes were as wide as saucers when he found out their venue was Stone brewery (and again when there was open bar prior to the ceremony). Watching an already sweet union was made even better with a glass of beer or wine in hand!

I didn’t pack much for my work travels, but can always rely on my thoughtful friend Wendy to come with a suitcase of fabulous options in tow. It was a tough choice between this flirty lace flounce dress and this Malene Birger tweed number (old style) that I’ve lusted after for years! The lace won out, and given the 6+ hour duration of the wedding, I opted for these comfy low-heeled pumps yet again. I pack these when I don’t have an outfit fully planned out yet since the color will end up going with everything.

And the happy newlyweds with their traditional Thai flower garlands. Congrats again Kelly and Mike – wishing you both a lifetime of happiness!
jean wendy jen weddingAlso enjoyed getting to catch up with Jen and Wendy…apparently lace was the fabric of the night! We spent most of our time hovering by the poke tuna + guacamole tacos (amazing) and their homemade cookies & ice cream station.

On the note of fellow bloggers, I loved getting to meet sweet Tam and her husband earlier this month! It’s always fun recognizing favorite pieces like this LOFT tweed sweater jacket from last year.

ASOS petite coat, Banana Republic pants (shrunk in dryer for ~10 minutes), LOFT blouse

And lastly, a snapshot from a quick meeting in beautiful Seattle. PS – this ASOS petite coat is back in stock in all sizes! You can see I wear it quite often, since it transitions well from professional to casual outfits. If interested, please see more photos and my commentary in this older post. The size 00 petite is very slim and fit without alterations, but size up if you want to wear thick layers underneath. The weight is also light for a coat, so best suited for fall or milder winter days.

So many of my favorite bloggers in one post! Love the picture of you with Wendy & Jen. It must have been so much fun getting to wear something from Wendy's amazing closet – both options were so gorgeous ! Also loved Kelly's wedding style – so unique & pretty.

Hi Jean! Thank you for the pop-up notification!! I love the ASOS coat.
I was thinking of ordering it in 00P for myself but I think I am a little bigger than you. (5', 100lbs, 32, 25, 34) so I was going to order both 00P and 1P to try. What do you think? Also, is the returns process easy for ASOS?

  • Jean November 10, 2014 at 1:12 am

Hi Stacey! The returns process is very easy for ASOS in my numerous experiences. I would recommend the 1P based on the measurements you've provided as this coat runs very small. I don't have it with me for a few days otherwise I would measure the waist and bust for ya!

You look very pretty in the lovely lace flounce dress! The cute design and petite length make it perfect for attending an outdoor wedding in the day. Kelly's wedding dress is so classy and sweet too, love it!

Thank you for your reply! I am also looking for a thicker coat since I am on the East Coast for the first time! I was stalking the Lady Day Thinsulate coat but I noticed it is more expensive ($378) than when you did your reviews.

Do you have any experience with the 2014 coats? And do you know when's a good sale time? I think I'll hold off until Cyber Monday.

Thanks again! I really appreciate your input.

LOVE the grey dress. Looks like a fabulous wedding. Not gonna lie, as a craft beer nut my eyes got really wide when I saw Stone Brewery in the post title… I had no idea they did weddings! Will have to stop by this week while I'm in town 🙂

Hi Jean, you look fabulour in the grey lace dress. I saw you also own the loft utility shirt. How do you wear a common boring piece like a button down shirt?

  • Anonymous November 10, 2014 at 9:56 am

Great look Jean, I love what you and Wendy can share clothes.

  • Julie November 10, 2014 at 10:40 am

Hi 🙂 I spotted you at China Max yesterday and was so caught off guard. I have been following your blog for the past few months and recognized you and your fiance. I'm glad you enjoyed San Diego. 🙂

Hey you were in my back yard!! I live in Carlsbad…Stone's gardens are so beautiful! I always thought a wedding reception there would be pretty. We've been having super warm weather so I'm sure it was perfect outside for your friend. 🙂
I'm so not blog savvy so I have no idea how to show up here as myself?

I am smiling imagining that anyone over 5'3" would have seemed like a giant at this wedding. Also wishing I had more friends my size with wardrobes as fabulous as yours and Wendy's.

Oh it looks like it was a gorgeous evening!! Love your dress!!

Hi, Jean, you look beautiful in that lace dress! Would you please tell me where you got those gold shoes you were wearing with the dress you didn't choose? Thanks!

  • Anonymous November 11, 2014 at 1:31 am

Lace is always classic. That dress is super cute! Did Wendy have that dress altered to be the right length? I would imagine that it dress would be super short on anyone taller than 5-5'2". Have you ever shopped at Aritzia before? Found this lace dress that looks so much like your DVF lace dress at 1/3 the price. I find their dresses run almost a bit on the shorter side even for myself so I would imagine it would be a good length for someone around your height 🙂;=19

I actually like the look of the Malene Birger tweed dress more than the lace dress, but I guess it's too much of a statement to wear at a wedding! I really like all your outfits in this post, and I don't know how you manage to look so chic + comfy at the same time when you fly! I hope you had a great time in LA!

Hi Stacey – I haven't tried this year's Thinsulate Lady Day so I don't know what's changed, if anything from prior years. They have had 25% off full priced items on occasion so far this season, so if you want to make sure your size is in stock then that would be as good a time as any to pull the trigger because the last time I checked, most colors were sold out already! Nuts! After christmas is when they can become cheap on extra discounts, but by then it's really the luck of the draw with sizes and colors that might pop back from returns. Please also note that although I wear my lady day coats regularly in the winter, some readers have mentioned that it's not warm enough for them so I guess it's personal preference.

  • Jean November 12, 2014 at 9:48 pm

Lol…I wouldn't call it "common" and "boring" – more so a wardrobe foundation piece. It has a lot of the elements that I like in clothes, such as good drape which equates to good fit, machine washable, comfortable, easily layer-able plus is lightweight and comfortable. It's easily dressed up with necklaces, jackets, scarves, or vests if you like that kind of look!
