1. H&M Trend chartreuse textured knit pleated shift, $39.95, sz 2, item #075199

Leopard "ponyhair" heels: old Calvin Klein (their lower heel version)
I brought two H&M items home without trying them on first, because fitting room lines were out the door. I love many things about the dress above - the color (similar to Ann Taylor's "ripe avocado" skirt) which would look great with bare legs or opaque tights, the sleek pleat in the front and in the back, the cozy thick knit material which was comfy and warm. The fabric is very textured in person, which doesn't come through in these photos.
The fit of this dress is very boxy off the rack and designed for someone taller, so I considered two types of alterations: 1) Hem length and slim sides marginally, to maintain the short shift dress silhouette that it was designed to be. The front and back pleats would also have to be tacked down with thread because they kept falling open and twisting.

Or, 2) Slim sides significantly into pencil dress-style but keep the length...
Two types of alterations for two different looks - one more contemporary and chic, and one more work-friendly. Which alteration would you have gone for? After much debate, I decided this dress wasn't worth the additional work (plus, the fabric smelled strongly of chemicals). I'm trying to be extra discriminatory with H&M purchases, since it's easy to go overboard there with the low price points and frequent new arrivals.
2. H&m burgundy sheath dress, $34.95, sz 2, item #024160 (also in red-orange):
After my friend Ping showcased this dress (see all the ways she styled it), I was very eager to try it on. I love the rich color and the simple sheath cut. The material is a thin crepe fabric with a little bit of stretch, and it is unlined. There was no sz 4 to be found so I brought home a 2 - which unfortunately was too tight and restricting on me for work. It looks fine from the front, but the indentations from my belly button/stomach/thighs were visible from the side, and the chest on me was stretched taught (for reference, I wear 30A).
H&M currently has other thin crepe dresses in 3 colors (white, hot pink, and black) which is the exact same style as this emerald dress from 2011. To me, these dresses represent wasted potential because they made the torso so snug (such that the interface lining shows through clearly) and the neckline low-cut. Below is how a sz 2 looked on me with no wiggle room to spare in the torso:

During my recent visit, I spotted another dress style hanging with the above, but the cut was slightly different. The neckline is noticeably higher, and the skirt seems to be more pencil-shaped. I only saw black this time around:
Below left: higher-neckline pencil dress, Right: same dress as above in white. Both are $34.95.

3. Next up, I've heard great things about Banana Republic's Sloan ankle trousers and had to give them a try myself. I love the color options they come in - the Cinnamon, Navy, and Winter Burgundy all have the potential to be work staples. The thicker fabric is great for a work pant and seems like the type that would not wrinkle easily.

Banana Republic Sloan Slim Fit Ankle Pants in Winter Burgundy (7 color options)
Measurements of 00P: 13.5" across waist, 17" across hips, 26" inseam, 5.5" ankle opening, 7" rise.

On my way out, I stopped to fondle the Julie belted sheath (pictured right), which seemed like a more work-appropriate but also more expensive alternative to the H&M burgundy sheath. See it on Phiphi.

I scheduled a post reviewing Banana Sloan burgundy pants & Gaps cropped pants too for this upcoming week...I am a bit bigger than you and I was surprise how well 00P fit on the burgundy pants..I kept them! I am so loving Burgundy...I tried all of H&M's goodies..the pencil skirt (too tight)..their pants (too long)..but I ended up with their burgundy sheer top. :-) So excited for fall!
ReplyDeleteI tried the Julie Belted Sheath actually and though it fits well, my friend commented that it looked a little too mature!
ReplyDeleteI think the first two H&M sheaths are better alternatives!

where did u get the belt that you paired with for H&M Trend chartreuse textured knit pleated shift? thanks in advance
ReplyDeleteHi there - it's a preowned Hermes belt that I received as a gift.
DeleteLUCKY!!!!!!! I am dying for a Hermes belt!
DeleteAw I love the chartreuse shift!! If you find a 4 in the burgundy h&m shift I'd love to see how it fits. I could only find 2s and noticed the same issues- extremely curve-hugging !
ReplyDeleteExcellent finds! I've been looking for plum pieces for the fall. But have yet to find anything. I like the BR ankle pants you tried.
ReplyDeleteLove the chartreuse sheath with the first alternation alternative!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting some burgundy pants, and I was debating between the H&M trousers or jeans, but I ended up getting the jeans version over this weekend. That burgundy sheath dress looks really pretty! By the way, just want to share with everyone, H&M is currently doing a promotion that you can get 20% off your ENTIRE purchase when you buy at least one David Beckham item...so you could just get a men's undershirt for $15 for your S.O., brother, etc. =)

i just picked up the Julie belted sheath last week (they had the 25% off online for cardholders)! the OOP fits perfectly on me so i think it would've been a bit big on you (although with some tapering on the sides and a slight hem adjustment, it'd work for you). the neck draping is beautiful and it is such a classic silhouette, perfect for a professional cocktail party as an alternative to a LBD :) reminds me of the classic Black Halo Jackie dress but at a much lower price point!
ReplyDeleteWe love seeing your shopping ventures! And, the great reasons why you decide to take back things you aren't in love with. That's a great lesson!

Based on your review and the ones on the BR site, I am thinking that the Sloan ankle pants with the slit at the bottom fit a little smaller in the legs than the Sloan crop with the tab waist that they were selling in the Spring and Summer.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the H&M chartreuse sheath with either alteration. The pleat is too wide for your small frame, IMO.
ReplyDeleteI love the HM chartreuse dress as a shift, the belt seems to manipulate the pleat too much, in my humble opinion :) You look great, girl!

I love the H&M shift dress, great color and with the belt looked classic but not boring. I would have kept it!
ReplyDeleteI went a little crazy on the AT sale, some great deals!!! Thanks for the heads up and links to some items you personally liked. BTW love that H7M brown bag you always have, can you post info on that if it pops up again? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to know I am not the only person questioning the quality/sizing of clothing from HM. I ordered several pieces from the fashion star winner's collection; cute yet the fit was odd. I have experienced this same phenomena in their dressing rooms. Items were tight in the bust and hip/thigh area, pulled in the stomach as well. Sadly, I have given up on HM.
ReplyDeleteI love the burgundy pants! great finds!
ReplyDeleteI agree that the sizing has been wonky, it seems on both sides of the size spectrum. This fall my high ticket wish list item is the J. Crew school boy blazer. I wish they carried it in store so I could try it on first but luckily returns are easy :)
ReplyDeleteI like it as a mini dress, but have no idea where I'd wear something like that.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for colored denim / pants for a long time, and recently bought the ankle zip legging jeans from Gap in green. Although they're "legging jeans," they're far from skin-tight, and the color / material doesn't look like denim from a distance. I'm a little under 5'2", 26-36 waist-hip, and got the regular size 2 which ended up fitting perfectly (wearing them like regular pants). Not sure if these would be something that you're interested in. :) http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=78107&vid=1&pid=243695&scid=243695022
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame about the white sheath at H&M. I tried it on and noticed the same problems with it. I'm looking for a simple white sheath and if it weren't too tight or low cut, it would've been perfect!

I always looking for work appropriate clothes so I would choose to the second alternation. Ping did a wonderful job styling the H&M burgundy sheath dress dress. I try on the dress in a size and it was too tight on me.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you're a 30A? I'm not trying to comment on the size of your breasts, but I am a 30FF and I wear a US dress size 8 or 10, while you go for waaaaaaaaay smaller dress sizes that I could never fit into.
ReplyDeleteI don't know your exact measurements, but going off the sizing of the sz 2 burgundy sheath, I estimated that you might be about 24-26 inches under your bust (the ribcage just under your breasts) and possibly 30-31 inches around your bust, which would mean that you might actually need to be wearing a 24F or 26E bra, instead of a 30A. The numbers and letters might seem insane, but bra fitting is all about getting you into a bra that doesn't move around, encases your breast tissue properly and leaves you feeling supported.
Please have a look at this calculator, which has information on how to measure yourself: http://www.butterflycollection.ca/bra-size-calculator/
If my estimate is correct and the calculator says you would do better in a 24 or 26 band than a 30, the only company I know of that makes bras in that band size are Ewa Michalak (http://www.ewa-michalak.pl/), but the Big Bra Bar sell some of their bras too (http://www.thebigbrabar.com/index.php/products/lingerie.html). Otherwise you might want to try a 28 band, which is more common and available in brands like Panache, Cleo, Freya and a number of others.
If you have been properly measured and know that you shouldn't add 4 inches to your underbust measurement unless you need it, and have discovered that 30A is definitely your correct size and that any band size smaller is too tight, then please ignore what I've said! XD
Again, please don't take my comment as a criticism of any kind. I am simply passionate about correctly fitted bras and want to make sure that you are aware of other possibilities out there other than a 30A.
Not offensive at all...it's a legitimate issue for many women and I'll be sure to take a measure using the calculator you linked to.
DeleteAn F cup??!! A 24 or 26 inch BUST?? That IS insane. Not to mention illogical. Most people's waists are 24 inches, not their busts.
DeleteThat's awesome, Jean!
DeleteAnonymous, I said underbust, not bust. The underbust is the measurement around your ribcage just underneath your breast tissue. This measurement can be smaller, the same size as or bigger than your waist measurement, depending on your shape. Mine is currently almost exactly the same as my waist (waist 29, underbust 29.5), but if I lost weight my waist measurement would be smaller.
I can't tell what Jean's measurements are, but it looks to me like her underbust might be a couple of inches bigger than her waist. Since she could fit into a dress with a waist size of 23.5 inches, I estimated that her underbust measurement might be 25 or 26 inches.
An F cup is not something to be astonished by. It simply means that the person's breasts extend 6 or 7 inches further out from the body than the ribs. In this case, if Jean does have an underbust of 24 and a bust of 30 that would be a 6 inch difference = an F cup. This doesn't always translate perfectly, because sometimes a person might choose to wear a tighter or looser band than the measurements show because they have bony ribs (like me - although I measure 29.5 I choose to wear a 32 band because 30 bands cut in) or tighter because they have more fat around their ribs (plus size women often do this, because they can afford to have a tighter band without it hurting). A person might also need a bigger or smaller cup size depending on the shape of their breasts. However, going off the actual underbust measurement is almost always more accurate than adding 4 or 5 inches to get band size, especially with smaller bandsizes.
This is completely irrelevant to this post but I was reading your post about tall boots for short women and I was wondering if you knew if taylors were able to shorten the shaft of boots. I have this pair of beautiful Ferragamo riding boots but sadly the shaft is 17 inches!I'm only 5'2" and I have short calves, I was hoping you might have some suggestions.
ReplyDeleteA professional shoemaker should be able to shorten the boot shaft. If you live in a major metropolitan area a good one shouldn't be hard to find. Ask around for a recommendation.
DeleteI agree that a good cobbler can shorten boot shafts, but the reason I haven't taken the plunge before is because of the cost and risk (you have no idea if you'll be satisfied with the work). Another blogger wrote a few years back it cost $80 to shorten boot shafts, and I've received quotes that were even higher.
DeleteThe first dress looks good both ways, but I would go for short if I bought it. I love the burgundy dress - gonna see if I come across it this week.
ReplyDeleteI have the black & khaki pairs of the Banana Republic pants. (Actually, nvm I just checked and I have the "Sateen Cropped Pants".) The thighs were wide and after shrinking both pairs, they fit very well throughout. The measurements went down 1/2 an inch to an inch all around, in case anyone is interested.
I really like the first H&M dress, the avocado color, with the belted silhouette - I think it looks great!
ReplyDeleteThe chartreuse dress looks cute short! But it is an understandable pass if it requires more work than you want to put forth.
ReplyDeleteI love the color of the Banana pants. The ankle makes it a definite no. I just returned a pair of pants from my LOFT order that hit me a little higher than where yours hit, but they measured 6.5"! Just looked ridiculous!
I tried on that purple dress from BR. it was way too big for me. and as 1 commenter said, I thought it was also "mature." but still cute.
ReplyDeleteI am debating still on keeping the burgundy dress. Not sure I am 100% in love w/the material. Damn, I swear, running as made me lost weight. I DO NOT like it. cuz I actually thought the sz 2 ran normal on me, possibly even slightly big at the chest. crazy. I need to start lifting and doing planks or smthg. hah!
ooooo....i like the chartreuse dress altered to stay in the shift dress shape! SO cute. i have been doing a lot of fall shopping but it is just WAY too hot to wear any of it!!! =(

Thanks for the Ann Taylor sale tip - I just bought myself a ton of shirts - and they're not black! I've gained some weight over the years, and I have been inspired by your blog to remake my closet and add color to it. My first step is starting with cotton basics with color.
ReplyDeleteCute dress and color! But I don't think everyone can pull it off as well as you!

hi Jean..
ReplyDeleteI really like the mustard / yellow shift dress..i would have definitely kept the length and created a slim pencil dress after alterations. I feel, The animal print shoes look very classy with that colored dress.
I also adore the burgundy dress. Only if we had H&M in India.:(..
i love ugly colors. mustard is my favorite and i'm finding it to be a more natural transition into fall. per usual the fit and the accessories really elevate the look. good job jean!

What other ankle pants can you recommend that are similar to the new BR ankle pants (w/o slits)? BR has a pair of online exclusive martin skinny pants that I adore and hoped they would sell in other colors but they just came out with these. I want a pair that is of the same material without slits. Any recommendations?

I am insanely jealous of your H&M pricing! It still boggles me how much more inflated Canadian prices are. I do love the first dress with the pleat down the middle, and I've tried it on in store as well. If you were to keep it, I would've kept the shift shape!

i'm following on bloglovin. you are great!
ReplyDeleteHi Jean!
ReplyDeleteJust to tack on to what contrary kiwi wrote above: I recently had a bra epiphany of my own, and while I have no idea what your bra size is supposed to be, whether that's a 30A or something else, I just wanted to share a few links that completely changed my life as a small-busted woman. If they can do the same for others, then I won't feel so bad about hijacking your space. :)
First of all, I used this page - http://www.evesappleslingerie.com/advice - and specifically the "Individual Breasts Measurement" method to determine my bra size. (I had previously used the ol' under-breasts-and-over-nipples method to determine my bra size, but the resulting bra size - a 32B - was a no-go.) I went from a 34B to a 32C, and although I was in complete disbelief (I have never, ever been bigger than a B cup all my life, and even the 34B gapped on me occasionally), the 32C fits beautifully!
Additionally, this page - http://blog.lindasonline.com/2010/12/16/so-you-know-your-bra-size-but-do-you-know-your-shape/ - and particularly the section on the "Perky Point" really helped me to understand why I'm not going to fill out all 32C bras perfectly, as the top of my breasts is relatively "shallow" whereas many (most?) bras appear to be designed for ladies with rounder breasts.
Finally, I measured my sister using the above method; she's always believed that she's a 32AA, but according to Eve's Apples, she's a 32B - which, shockingly, fit beautifully as well! (By the way, she didn't completely fill the top of her 32B bra either, but like me, her breasts aren't perfectly round on top. It doesn't meant that she needs to size down a cup size, but rather find a bra style that better caters to shallower breasts.) The reason that the traditional bra-sizing method didn't work for us is because we have wide-set breasts, and a good portion of our breast tissue is actually situated closer to our armpits rather than "front and center".
Anyway, perhaps all of that was TMI, but given how much this revelation has completely transformed my previous outlook on bras, I can't help but share. I hope at least one person finds this marginally useful! :)
Hi M - I can't tell you how many times I hear success stories after women who have been wearing the wrong bra size for years finally figure out their right size. I wore a 32A all throughout my adolescence because that's the smallest most dept stores sell, and I had such backaches and discomfort from them shifting around. A 30A in certain bras has been life changing for me, but I do hold suspicions that those may still not be properly fitted. thanks for sharing your story and I'll take a look at the blog post you mentioned.
DeleteAlthough I wear 2R/4R and have no difficulty finding myself clothes, I'm always checking your blogs. You are my favorite blogger for two big reasons: 1) your outfits are so work appropriate; 2) your shopping reviews are so informational and I love your decision making process. It is hard to put down something that makes you look good although you know you've already got the style in your closet. A big thank you for saving a working mom's inefficient shopping hauls. Thank you, Ly! The dot pants are adorable.
DeleteToo bad you didn't keep the burgundy dress; would have loved to see how you style it. I like the style, color and price point. Now I just have to stop by H&M and see if I can find it.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of the shortened chartreuse shift dress! It's so much more fun than having a pencil dress style. Unless it would be used solely for work of course!
ReplyDeleteMaggie
I love your philosophy that leaves no wardrobe piece behind (kind of like the Marines I guess). You are really helping me get that way too-- so it isn't the 80/20 rule, but really having each piece in my wardrobe have a function, fit well and work with everything else.
ReplyDeleteI suddenly "get" why on those makever shows that give you $5000, the person only buys maybe 10 items. But they are really great classic, fitted pieces that all go together.
Keep help us see the fit flaws while trying on clothes so we can avoid them too.
I see what you mean by the fit of the burgandy dress... it has those "smile" lines in the chest and the hips area. And, you are starting to see the "S" curve a little. Luckily, you are so petite it's not a big deal, but it's good to point them out for us so we can see what does/doesn't work.
Hi Janki ... haha, I'll reserve my thoughts on those makeover shows and what they purchase with $5,000. However I will point out (thanks to an article Kelly once shared) that the key to the "reveals" on those shows looking so great is because every single item the subject purchases ends up getting custom tailored! Now that's a benefit worth much more than the sometimes overpriced clothing, especially since I can see those subjects never realizing what tailored-to-fit clothing can do for them.
DeleteI have the petite Sloan ankle pants in slate and I'm really happy that after washing them, they fit exactly as they are supposed to!

Hi Jean - this is a bit offtopic but wanted to hear your opinion. Did you know Ann Taylor LOFT is requiring shoppers to produce their driver's license for all returns and exchanges, with or without receipts, within the return grace period? How do you feel about this? I for one, have to shop online to find the petite sizes, and don't feel it is fair to be penalized and logged in a corporate DB. I am debating writing them a letter and no longer shopping with them.
ReplyDeleteHi Lara - I was asked for my drivers license a few weeks back for a return at Ann Taylor (not LOFT). I do many returns and that was the first time it happened, and I have to say I was pretty alarmed being someone who shops online often to try on the limited sizing. I asked the manager what it was for, and she said for corporate to track excessive returns. As much as I dislike that, I have to understand the decision from a business perspective (ie. like Nordstrom online banning customers due to excessive ordering and returning). However, I do hope they will realize that it will alienate a lot of customers, and discontinue the practice.
DeleteI'm not sure how this is fair when they carry so few petite items in their stores. It's bad enough that we even have to pay shipping to get the same items other people can try on and purchase in a store. This is nothing but discriminatory.
DeleteAnother thing that bothers me about Ann Taylor lately is that they randomly send other people's Style Finder orders (in some random size and style that is nothing I'd even buy) that *I* have to return on my own time. And don't expect their sour associates to apologize. Oh no. Speaking of Style Finder, if you order something by that method and it goes on Final Sale by the time an associate gets around to sending it, you are stuck. Even though when you placed the order, they had plenty of inventory and it wasn't on Final Sale at all.
I'm so tired of this economy and all that comes with it.
Is anyone else just having a really hard time shopping this spring/summer/fall? I feel like I am swimming in all the clothes, having a hard time with the colors and find the voluminous shapes + big shoulders + out of control vanity sizing really challenging for my frame. I hate to be a negative nancy, but it's really frustrating because i do need updates and have had real trouble finding things that work.
ReplyDeleteI loved the sloan pant at banana, a 2p was perfect. (historically martin has also been a good fit!) The only problem -- every single pair of their fall pants was dry clean only. For a few pairs of my wardrobe this is fine, but you would think they'd at least have a few more practical options!
so, anybody have suggestions for hacking this fashion cycle?
ReplyDeleteI prefer the work-friendly look of the chartreuse, but this may be age speaking as I tend to gravitate more towards the conservative. Ping's post was awesome! I loved all her burgundy pairings bc I was seriously racking my brain on non-neutral combinations. Do you have any ankle-pant rules as far as shoes go? Flats / heels / wedges / anything goes?
ReplyDeletei love the chartreuse dress on you too - i have been gravitating to burgundy and navy for fall. thank you also for linking to me!
ReplyDeleteyou wear colour beautifully so i can't wait to see what you have coming up for the new season! xox P
I think I prefer the work-friendly length best! Depending on what you wear with it, you could make it more casual. But you can't make the shorter version more work appropriate because of the length.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering — do you have any tips for altering the hem on a stretchier piece of clothing, like a pencil skirt or a pant? I'd like to tackle the hem of my J.Crew Minnie pants myself (a cotton/spandex blend — stretch twill), but I'm not sure if it would best be left to a tailor.
Fun, I really love all the dresses and am super excited about all the Fall trends and colors :)

I really like the burgundy pants! The perfect colour for fall - I'll be stopping by my BR to try it out for myself. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving Burgundy & Metallic pieces for fall! I can't wait to get my hands on a peplum Burgundy top which I can dress up or down. :) On a side note, have you ever shopped at Aritzia? The sizes there range from XXS to XL, definitely many petite finds where there is no alterations required!

Your outfits give me ideas that I can actually do - plus I've discovered retailers through your blog. THANK YOU!! You also inspired me to buy the Hermes belt you wear, it seems to pull together any outfit to make it look polished. Amazing blog; keep it up!!

Hi Jean - I tried this exact dress on over the weekend too. I was drawn immediately to the colour but like you when I tried it on, it didnt' have a wow factor, but I still liked it. What I thought would be nice is to put on a belt, similarly to what you have done but then to pull the dress up over the belt so that it it looks more casual and it shortens the hem in the process. Pop on some ankle boots and a long necklace and you have a more casual look :)
ReplyDeleteJust thought I'd share - I tired on a sweet lilac skirt and a peplum tee in the same colour as the dress too! I'm liking all the new H&M clothes this season

Love the chartreuse dress and burgundy dresses on you! I just want to thank you for your honesty RE sizing. I get the feeling that others in the blogging community are sometimes not honest about the sizes they wear, which makes it harder for readers to take reviews seriously (or walk out of the dressing room feeling like a cow!).

Hi Jean, I just wanted to thank you & let you know how helpful your reviews are, particularly with H&M. I have been looking for the burgundy sheath dress since I spotted it on H&M's site to no avail. However, thanks to your review, I now know the dress is available in stores & was able to put one on hold using the item# that you shared. This is the second time I've been able to do this thanks to your blog posts! :)
ReplyDeleteIf you woulda kept the chartreuse shift, definitely shorter and shift shape for fun! Could also be work appropriate with opaque tights like you said. But boo on the chemical smell
ReplyDeleteI love the Sloan ankle pants in the Burgundy...but they didn't carry that color in petites in either of my two local Banana stores. Of course when I looked to order them online they were sold out in my size (0P). I did get them in the cinnamon, which was also nice, and a color that was lacking in my wardrobe (the last thing I need is yet another pair of black or navy pants.)
