H&M reviews: Conscious collection, navy dots, 20% off coupon

Armed with my 20% off coupon, I popped into H&M during lunch to scope out their latest merchandise. This navy with white polka dots dress (found it in the women's work department) quickly caught my eye:hmapril
Navy dots dress in XS, also comes in solid colors, item #031063, $28 after coupon

Material is "slinky" (95% viscose, 5% elastane)...I don't know how to explain it but it feels like slip/shapewear material, and not a cotton knit like I'd prefer. The silhouette reminds me of my beloved Ann Taylor striped dress, which I interestingly enough reviewed exactly 1 year ago, alongside last year's H&M Conscious collection. Both dresses have a crossover V-front and side ruching, except the H&M version has ruching that extends to the back side (which I appreciate) except just on the front half.

The H&M version is cut for someone taller than me, so the neckline is a little low, the armholes are big, and the length hits me below the knee. This can be fixed, however, via DIY Alteration #2. This is one of those dresses that would look fabulous on a curvier figure. On someone less curvy, however (like myself), it might be harder to fill it out especially because the letter sizing (XS, S, etc) feels roomier than the numerical size I usually wear. A wider belt may be needed to define the waist.

Verdict: Purchased. Want to keep, but it's similar to something I already have. Friends & bf vote keep.

Next up is H&M's Spring Conscious collection made of sustainable or recycled materials, featuring lots of lace, floral, and white. This blouse looks vibrant online (& I love those sandals! Please let me know if you see 'em in person) but is a more washed out in-person. I do like the colors, though. The base is a sheer peach-blush pink with neon yellow, minty teal, and coral red throughout. This makes the blouse easy to pair with white or trendy colored denim in any of the aforementioned colors.

Conscious floral blouse sz 2, item #045469, $24 after coupon & lace skirt sz 2, item #021285, $12

Retailing at $14.95, this lace pencil skirt is one of the biggest bargains in the store, esp. after the coupon....
It fits me well in the waist and hips and hits me right above the knee - no alterations needed! It comes in a peach cream and a brighter pink, and is fully lined with a gold zipper on the back. There are also swingy, cropped tank tops in similar lace and colors.

Conscious floral blouse sz 2, item #045469, $24 after coupon & lace skirt sz 2, item #021285, $12

Lace skirt verdict: Passed. Even though this skirt combines many things I love -lace, pencil shape, good fit, GREAT price, girly colors- I did not pick it up. My concern was the material which already shows some creasing across the front. I sit all day at work so front skirt crinkles are my pet peeve (none of my existing pencil skirts crinkle...I stick to lightweight wool or softer knits, and avoid cotton /poplin, twill, or very cheap materials).

As you can see above, the blouse is not so great for tucking into fitted-waist bottoms because it is billowy. It is also slightly longer in the back than in the front, making it almost tunic-length on me.
hmapril4
Old Navy rockstar jeggings in 0P, old Cole Haan flats, belt from another H&M dress

The fit is definitely more casual - the shoulder seams go slightly past my natural shoulders, and the sleeves are wide (I'd want to slim them) and slightly long on me. I like how it looks with skinny denim and I'm a fan of the button details, color scheme, floatiness, and collar (good for layering). I'm just not sure how much wear this would get.

Floral blouse verdict: Purchased but undecided.

The Conscious collection is full of this print: dress, shorts, blouse, and also a puffy skirt (not pictured):

Readers - Should I keep the dot dress, floral blouse, or neither?

PS - I'm selling my H&M blue paisley sundress in a size 2, new with tag, but without the belt which I've worn. Selling for $18 including ship within the US - please let me know if interested!

  1. If you don't keep the blouse that would be ok, it's very pretty, but I'll bet you could something better.

But that polka dot dress looks like a million bucks on you! You should keep that one for sure!

  9. I own the blue and white polka dot dress. I love it very much. The material is very sheer, and it is best to wear a full body slip underneath. I bought it in pink too!

  10. Oh I wish H&M would hurry and open in Houston. I think the navy polka dotted dress looks really good on you. I think you should keep it. The shirt has a pretty pattern, however I feel every year, there's a new sheer like blouse with a new pattern. It's not perfect. I think you should wait. You never know, you might find another blouse worth purchasing.

  11. I stop by H&M but didn't get anything. The line for the fit rooms were crazy. You should keep the Navy Dot dress. It looks great on you.

  12. that navy dot dress looks amazing on you! and now i really want that blouse!!!

  13. love the first dress, even if it's a tad bit too long
the blouse is nice too, especially worn casually. that kind of material from h&m does not suit general tucking into high-waisted pants/skirts/etc (i bought something similar recently and it has the same problems). i would only keep it if it was under $20...

  14. Definitely keep the dot dress - that looks amazing on you. I neither here nor there on the blouse, though. ;-)

  15. Jean, I apologize for not commenting here or visiting here regularly. I do think all of these outfits are lovely on you. I love this navy dress the most. The blue with the dots make this look like a starry sky. It's just gorgeous on you. These other outfits, ranging from casual to classy, are all also very lovely.

  17. I think you should keep the dotted dress! I think it looks great on you and it gives you a very nice hourglass shape. I like the print of the floral blouse, but I can't see it pairing well with anything except pants or shorts.

  25. Agree with all of the above. The polka dot dress is incredibly flattering on you and I imagine you will find it quite versatile. The blouse - not so much.

As for the paisley dress, if no one else is interested I most certainly am! lin.a.michaels@gmail.com

  26. That polka dot dress -- DEFINITE keep. You look amazing in it! Not sure about the other items, but definitely keep the polka dot dress.

And I know you've worn your rockstar jeggings in other posts - but I always think to myself how nice you look in them :)

  27. I really like how that navy dot dress looks on you. You should def. keep it. I also like how the blouse looks on you. I think you could pair it with a lot of things. :)

  34. You look lovely in the blue dress! Just wondering if you've ever considered shoulder pads as a way to lift up the cleavage of a dress that sits a bit too low? I've found that it can work wonders ( I have in mind a small square-ish shape rather than 80's style shoulder protectors!) if all you need is a small adjustment and also gives a very modern silhouette, but seems to work best on dresses with sleeves

  35. I love when you post about the H&M coupons. I always mean to go there, but I let it slip my mind and these coupons give me incentive or at least a strong reminder(?) haha.
I really like the polka dot dress on you, but I'm not too crazy about all that ruching. I think it might make for a nicer top and the rest of the material would be great for a scarf, because of its 'slinky' material like you said.
I don't know... I feel more secure with thicker material around my bottom.

  36. Hey Jean! I think you look lovely in both the dress and the top. BUT only keep the ones you are in LOVE with. I think there are a lot of things you can pair the top with and the colours are great for spring/summer. The dress is great for work, so I am sure that would get plenty of wear!! Good luck!!

  41. I wouldn't keep any of these, they don't look elegant and you can tell they are from cheaper brand stores (a lot of times you can find items in cheaper brand stores (forever 21, H&M..) that could be passed as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic...). But these, they just loook...well cheap

  42. I really like the floral print of the shirt. It's perfect for the season. Although I love how the shirt is loose and billowy, I don't really like the hi-low tops. I think the cut is awkward. I like hi-low skirts and dresses, but for shirts, I think the back looks strange.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love the dot dress assuming you make the alteration you mention -- but then, I've been looking for a navy-and-white polka dot piece for a few months now, so I may be biased!

    ReplyDelete
  44. i think the navy and white polka dot dress is very versatile - i have a dress with that and it is really a great staple!

  45. Definitely keep the dress. I wouldn't wear the blouse myself.

  46. Rocketdog flats? I have the same pair!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm into the floral blouse, but you're right about the back being too long! What is it made of? Hopefully it can shrink?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree with what you wrote about the navy, polka dot dress and the floral top. I fell in love with the botanical pattern today when I saw it at the Newbury St. H&M. It looks a bit big on you like you said. The navy polka dot could look fantastic with some alterations, but as is, it could look really good on some one with a curvier figure. I'm going to head back to H&M tomorrow with the coupons you posted and buy some of the hairpins I was eyeing.

  49. I would not keep the dress, but I would keep the top.

  55. Jean, the navy dot dress is hot. The cut is totally give your curves their best advantage.

  56. I vote to return the polka dot dress. I love your AT striped version so much more, plus it's work appropriate. I can't see you getting as many wears out of the polka dot one. Perhaps keep for a week or two to see if you would reach for H&M's over AT's? If so, it may be worth keeping.

I personally like the blouse tucked and untucked on you, but I'm more of a messy dresser ;) Love the print and hope to see it a my store soon!

  57. I really like the new Spring collection from H&M. I'll have to wait until I travel out of town to buy their items. However, I am excited from them to launch their online store for the U.S. this fall!

  61. Hi Jean! I say keep the polka dotted dress and the floral blouse, it looks great on you! AND i love how the white old navy jeans fit on you, it looks amazing! I buy most of my jeans at old navy, and i will definitely look out for that white hot pair~! i am petite as well and also has the same dilemma with clothes that don't fit me at times..

  62. Hey Jean!

No curves?! Without sounding creepy, you have a nice backside! I think this dress looks great on you! And the neckline looks great! Don't adjust that...but I do agree to shorten it.

I am so in love with the print of the blouse! You are the only one that makes me want to visit H&M. I usually loathe going in the store...too many things to choose from! But occasionally I will visit when I see you share something cute. :) So...keep the blouse! :)
