Gap Kids Lace Top sz L/10 (sold out online but there's shorts in the same lace), ~$14 after 40% off
Gap Kids Super Skinny Jeans in 12 reg, 6 colors (loove the phosphorus that's almost gone), ~$18
Jewel necklace from J.Crew outlet, chain necklace from Savers thrift store
After a productive morning of studying, I treated myself to a pit stop at Gap Kids on my way home. I had been watching these 2 pieces online for over a month, and was thrilled to see they were still available. Sizes online are almost gone, but check your local stores as Gap Kids is supposed to offer up to a size 16-18 in girls.
This weekend, Gap is running 40% off your entire purchase both in-stores and online (try code GAPFAMILY or GAPFRIENDS) for BR/Gap/ON card members (30% off for non-members), so I picked up both pieces for $32 and change.

These pieces are surprisingly not too kiddy-cut, but to make the entire outfit more grown-up, I would add a lady-like swing jacket and some nude pumps. My simple makeup here was slapped on quickly for photos, but it's representative of what I'd like to wear once spring comes - neutral, unlined eyes with lots of mascara, bronzed cheeks, and a bright, juicy lip...
My biggest issue with these jeans is that they are a cropped ankle-length, and not full-length.** However, the waist, hips, and rise fit me so well that I'm accepting them as ankle jeans for spring/summer. The sz 12 I have measures 12.75" across the waist, 16" across the hips, 7.5" rise, and 24" inseam. Keep in mind that bigger sizes will also have longer inseams. Material is 99% cotton, 1% spandex and feels like the Gap skinny jeans I know and love (personally find them to be more comfortable and durable than the popular ON jeggings).**Thanks to a great tip from Jen, I ordered the 14 slim (online exclusive size) to compare. In my past experience, kids slim sizes have the same waist/hips as one size smaller, but longer inseams

My camera also distorts the color of this 'aloe' denim and makes it look fluorescent. In person, it' a beautiful, light, true mint color. Slightly lighter than what you see here:

And if you think the lace shell looks familiar, so did I. I have a 2011 BR Mad Men Collection lace shell in PXXS that I sadly haven't gotten much wear out of, because of the stark white color. I was planning on selling that one and now I can potentially replace it with this. The kids one also comes in a coral color, and in a tunic/dress version (see on me) for about $10 more.
When compared against each other, the fit of the Gap Kids L/10 lace shell is the same across the bust, but is slightly wider at the bottom and 3 inches longer in length than my PXXS womens. The kids version is a beautiful light creme in-person, lined in 100% cotton with a side zip. My favorite detail is the slightly scalloped hem.
I expected the lace pattern to be very similar, but was quite surprised to find out it's identical - just a different color and without glitter flecks (the 2011 BR has glitter; 2012 kids one does not). Just goes to show you how a company can re-use the same design and fabric, but market it to a different demographic for a fraction of the price.
I love both of these pieces, but in the spirit of being honest with myself and acknowledging that I'll be holed up every weekend this spring, I might return one or both. I need to evaluate if these pieces are more of a 2012 seasonal trend (cough, mint jeans) or if they can be worn many times in the future.
Some other kids items I couldn't find in-store, but look potentially mature enough for chic adults:
- White denim shorts with floral print (love these!), $16 after 40% off
- Crochet sweater dress, $24 after 40% off
- Striped skirt w/ pockets in 2 colors, $10 after 40% off
Readers - Are you shopping the Gap 40% off sale this weekend? Did anyone else pick up either of these kids pieces?

You look beautiful! Great color combination!
ReplyDeleteHave the best weekend!
Big hugs!

Umm...is there a code or something for the 40%off? I am a BR Luxe card holder and have heard nothing about this.
ReplyDeleteSorry, forgot to add it. Try GAPFAMILY or GAPFRIENDS. No code needed in-store, just your card.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Jean!
Deletenooo you look so much older >_< I don't like the top
ReplyDeleteI honestly think I might get those jeans! I've been looking for some nice sea foam green ones and these are perfect for spring!
ReplyDeleteHave you gotten anything from the DVF line?
love the color of the jeans, but the length looks awkward on you. I don't really think cropped ankle works on really short girls.
ReplyDeleteGah! I love it. You looks so cute. I love the combination of the lace with the mint jeans. it fits you really really well. LOVE IT.

Oh wooow, I love those pants! Me wants ♥
ReplyDeleteAnd coral lipstick looks great on you
Love the look. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, great insight about identical lace pattern for BR and Gap and yet, the stark price difference. I actually remember eyeing the BR top last season but didn't end up getting it. I love the lace top...that color and scalloped edge.

I've been eyeing those kiddie jeans for ages, but I'm not sure I can pull off mint green and cropped. You rock the look though!
ReplyDeleteNice! Tempted to get the jeans. I've been wanting some colored skinny jeans.
ReplyDeleteThe jeans are a great price to pay and wear while it's still on trend! I wish the length was a little longer. I was very close to picking up the mint-gray pair for women at Gap yesterday (with the same discount), but passed.
ReplyDeleteThat lace pattern is the exact same pattern as my lace tee from Aritzia, which I think I paid $50 for (and also Canadian with taxes)! Man I feel so jipped! I'm gonna get the coral one now..lol. Great outfit btw, hope your studying is going well! :)
ReplyDelete@Petite in the City I hav the same Aritzia top ;-) I feel jipped too! Boo!
ReplyDeleteI ordered the shorts & the mint jeans after reading this, along with the green lace dress for a garden wedding...I'm 5'6, so I ordered plus sizes...thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteThe American Eagle colored skinny jeans are great too and short lengths available online. I cuff mine. They run TTS in my opinion, despite the online reviews.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was thinner, that was definitely a bonus of being a petite - shopping in the kids section. And in Canada, kid's clothes didn't have any tax, so that was an added bonus too.

I love that lace top....and what a great alternative to your BR one! I would be tempted to order those jeans too if they were still availabe in that yellow color online but they're all sold out :( (probably a good thing actually, I've been way too credit card happy lately! Lol
ReplyDeleteI almost bought the darker pink one since it's similar to JCrew's but didn't because of the cropped length. I usually wear flats so I'd prefer the option to wear them long. I also tried the 14 hoping it would cover my ankles but the inseam was only a tad longer than the 12. If you don't mind the cropped length, I think $18 is a good value for something you may not like next year. And I love the lace top on you much better than the BR one. The longer length makes it more versatile. I say you keep that one :)
ReplyDeleteThe jeans are so cute! I'm tempted to place an order, but if they're ankle-length on you, they will probably be a strange length on me (I'm 5'3").
ReplyDeleteI like how realistic you are about deciding whether or not to keep purchases depending on how they fit into your lifestyle. I need to adopt this more rational approach as I attempt to streamline my wardrobe!
ReplyDeletei've been crazy for mint pants lately! i can't fit into a 12 so boo. wonder if there's any left in stores. thanks for the heads up! it always looks great with white
ReplyDeleteLove your outfit and you look stunning!
ReplyDeleteI'm studying for the CFA too! And live in Boston too! Small world.
ReplyDeleteGood luck studying! See you at the exam, lol : )
DeleteYou look lovely as always! I'm so impressed that you just made a kids outfit look grown up. :) Just out of curiosity, what do you wear when you're off studying? I spend most weekends doing homework (professional by day, student by night) so i can definitely commiserate with you and having to spend weekends buried in books! Thanks for posting and hoping your studying is going well!
ReplyDeleteI throw on skinny jeans (not too tight..we want legs to have circulation after 5 hours : ) and usually a pullover sweater like the jcrew honeycomb over a button up, or just a chambray or gingham shirt plus flats. Really not very fashionable, but I'm usually out the door within 20 min of waking up so looking stylish has to be sacrificed for efficiency. Good luck with your night clases as studying!
Delete*and studying : )
DeleteI love those jeans. I fit into the kids clothes at Gap as well. haha. Benefits of being petite!
ReplyDeletehttp://craycraystyle.blogspot.com/
Love the mint on you!!! Because it's Spring and you're wearing it with nude pumps, I actually really like the length of the jeans on you. It gives a laid-back vibe and the top adds a touch of femininity to the outfit. I'm really tempted to stop by my local Gap Kids store now =D
ReplyDeleteI like how you style the top and jeans! With the folded legs and nude pumps combo, I think you've managed to make the jeans work for you. The top (being of a neutral colour) may last you more than 1 season than the jeans. But then again, you look really good is green, so you can make the jeans last longer than 1 season. Ever since I saw you in the J-Crew Lady Day in green, I somehow think of green as your signature colour.
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous, as usual!
ReplyDeleteI work at Gap - just tell them that you got an email for forty percent off but don't have it with you, I've honored that all day. It's a great sale and I had to refrain from shopping while I was at work, haha.
Haha nice! I was told card members didn't need anything and that the 40% off was automatic. A pleasant surprise, as I didn't see that posted anywhere in the store.
DeleteLove those jeans! Great colors - your outfit makes me want spring!

Those jeans look so gorgeous on you. Who would've thought they were kid's size. Love the color and the laced top as well!

i know right! and the whole outfit was such a great deal :P

The pants look lovely on you! I love cropped pants and they look lovely on you without cutting off you height.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Thanks for the advice... I've been looking for colored denim (that actually fits me) for awhile now. I've been jealous of all my regular sized friends that can fit into colorful denim everywhere. I went over to Gap Kids and got them. Thank you so much! :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful! So glad I can be of help. Now your reg-sized friends might be jealous of the deal you scored em at : )
DeleteHey! What adult size are you? Because I'm super excited for the DVF collection for GapKids and I was considering of ordering it online if it runs out in stores as I think it will (I don't know if everything will be gone by the time i get there after school, around 4PM)... I'm a size 0 adult, about 110lbs, 5'4ft. How about you? What kids size do you recommand ordering?
ReplyDeleteHi there- at 5'4" the kids stuff may be too short for you (I'm only 5' and you can see the strange length kids jeans hit me at). My measurements are 30A bra size, 24 waist, 32 hips and I take a 12 in their bottoms and 10/12 up top, or large. Good luck shopping!
DeleteWow, those pieces are not what I expect to find in the kids section. I have been looking at this lace shell by Sabine at
ReplyDeletehttp://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=2008980120000&cid=79120
and now I'm wondering what is the difference in women's sizing and quality compared to the Gap Kids one. There's probably a big price difference too.
Why are companies creating clothing with an older cut and style for kids?
Helen
That link actually looks very different.. The lace looks finer, thinner and like it'd drape better. The lace on this gap kids one as well as the banana republic mad men one last year holds its shape wih less drape.
DeleteThat lace is everywhere! BR, Gap, Aritzia, and I saw it at the J.Crew outlet store as well! It's such a pretty fabric, and awesome that you spotted it at such good price!
ReplyDeleteTruly it's almost everywhere, i bought a dress made of the same lace in a beige shade from P.A.R.O.S.H paid 500euros, and then my mother bought me a shirt here in Paris from Beija-Michelle Lindup and surprisingly it's always made in the same lace.
DeleteAnyway i love those color pop skinny, i'll give it a try.
The lace P.A.R.O.S.H dress is the same dress i'm wearing in my profile photo.
DeleteThat GAP mint jeans looks so fine on you...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations you've built another awesome outfit for petite!
Keep it going!
Les Cerisiers en Fleurs
Jean, I have to stop reading your blog- you always have the best shopping finds! I've been craving colored denim since your post with the pink asos jeans last year but haven't had any luck finding anything that might even slightly work... (I'm a bit more petite than you), but now I can indulge in something that may actually fit! Can't wait until they arrive, fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteAwesome : ) I always eye the colored denim on Asos petite, but they are at least $50+ for denim that doesn't compare to Gap's in terms of comfort and stretch. Let me know how these work out for you.
DeleteJean, are you ever available as a personal shopper?
ReplyDeleteHi there - Haha, styling others is not my strength so I think I will stick to my current career for now. Thank you for asking, though.
DeleteHow long ago did you try on that coral lace dress? I need to find it!!
ReplyDelete2-3 days ago. There were quite a few at my local store, so just call any GapKids, describe it, and if they don't have your size you can ask them to look up the closest one in the system.
DeleteI like the mint colored jean. I was thinking of staying away from colored jeans or pants but I may have to consider.
ReplyDeleteyou are rockin this outfit! so jealous you fit into Gap Kids...you'll get to enjoy the DVF collection!

The coral lace dress is very cute! Is this the same coral dress that was in your picture? http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=6300&pid=608732&vid=1&scid=608732012
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting this! I got the jeans right away after I gasped at the fact that they are from the kids section. They're such a great deal!
ReplyDeleteThe size 14 unfolded is a strange length for me so I'm going to wear them cropped. I'm 5'3 so size 14 length might work better for you!
love the mint jeans!
ReplyDeleteGreat find! I'll have to check out the Gap Kids at south coast this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI've bought GAP Kids jeans before and was a little embarrassed to do so - they weren't as beautiful as these though!
ReplyDeleteI've just discovered this site by the way; I love it! I write a UK petite blog called Diary of a Small Girl, so it's interesting to see where you guys shop the other side of the pond! Looking forward to reading more!
www.facebook.com/diaryofasmallgirl (having the actual blogger overhauled at the moment!)
I love those pants! Utterly fantastic outfit, by the way!
ReplyDeleteHaha, really love the mint pants. So glad that those are trending right now!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you want to disclose this online, but as a good asian business school school girl, I can't help but ask...where do you work?

Very beautiful girl and clothes. My girlfriend must like it very much.Thank you so much for your sharing.
