H&M November - Peplum dress, tweed, and drapey blouses

I have not been enticed by much at H&M lately, which is a good thing. I did plenty of Fall shopping and now need to focus on streamlining my wardrobe. Here are the items I tried on this month (1 purchase so far):

1. Divided Peplum Dress (item # 061128) in sz 2, $29.95. My wardrobe is in dire need of cocktail dresses. This LBD fit me nicely and I thought the silhouette was smashing. I know some women are scared of peplum, but it can be figure-enhancing for those like myself with minimal curves. With the right accessories, this $30 dress can look more $$$. The material is poly/elastane - feels like a thick ponte. Purchased.

2. Divided Tweed Jacket in sz 2, $39.95. I have been looking for a Chanel-esque collarless jacket, and would've seriously considered this if the color combo was classier. Sleeve length was slightly awkward on me, but the cropped torso length is good for shorter women. Unfortunately, pink, white, and black with silver zippers all over is not for me. Passed (although I did find my Chanel-esque jacket shortly after - can't wait to share!).

3. H&M Trend Boucle Skirt, sz 2 - $39.95 (or was it $49?) H&M Trend used to be my favorite department, but lately it's been either too funky for me, or too expensive. This skirt is both. What could've been an elegant burgandy boucle skirt (sounds dreamy, no?) was snipped here and there, to become a mini with an uneven slit and a front length that is 2" shorter than the back. Passed.

4. H&M regular Knit Blazer, sz 4 - $34.95. My knit blazer from last year is still a wardrobe favorite, so I just wanted to show an alternative currently available in stores. This one seemed popular and I could not find a sz 2 to try on. Hip length works well for shorter ladies. Passed.

5. H&M regular Front-Placket Blouse, sz 2 - $29.95. I saw these in four colors (mauve, navy, cream, and I forget the last) and they reminded me of Ann Taylor's double-placket blouse. This one is longer and comes with a thin brown belt - probably meant to be worn as a tunic. I liked the drape when tucked in, and the selection of colors, but material seemed cheaper than usual and wrinkle-prone. Passed.
Readers - Any good finds from H&M lately? Please share!

  2. I saw that skirt today too. I could not bring myself to try it looking at the weird color/texture and length.

  3. Love the fun peplum dress! I can't believe it was only $30! Awesome find.

  4. i think the chanel dupe looks nice in that colour. but i agree. the peplum dress is smashing! i'm going to have to look for that one in stores now

  5. I found a great indigo colored blouse, oversized on the sales rack -- I recently posted about it on my blog. Sheer on the back, it is made of a nice silky material that I loved. I also bought a pair of trouser-like pants (seen in my latest post) which are too long but look really nice rolled up. You can check both pieces out at my blog~
I love your peplum dress! It makes your waist look so tiny, and it accentuates your curves nicely.

  6. The dress is beautiful - almost looks like an investment piece. And you're right; with the right accessories (a Chanel bag and expensive shoes, maybe) this dress could easily look like a $300 splurge. That last blouse is awful. Even for a low quality store like H&M this is simply unacceptable.

  7. The peplum dress looks great for $30. I love how ladylike it is and that silhouette is great for making one look curvier.

  8. LOVE the peplum dress, I am a fan of the silhouette. Saw everything you tried on recently but for some reason H&M's latest offerings didn't appeal to me like they usually do (Zara, on the other hand, has wowed me which is where my money has gone). I want to like the tweed items they released but just didn't...same for the boucle skirt (saw it in person and just didn't feel it). Thanks for the fitting room reviews!

  9. They completely ruined that skirt by adding the unevenness to it. But I've always loved the idea of the side slit ever since the 90s/Ally McBeal days! As for the dress, what a glamorous find for such a good price. Can't wait to see how you style it and for the reveal of this Chanel-esque jacket you picked up.

  10. Love the one shoulder feature of the dress!

Too bad the front placket blouses wrinkle too easily!

    Thanks for sharing! :)

And I thought this was too funny, the word verification just asked me to type "funksno"! :p

  11. The Peplum Dress looks adorable! I love one shoulder dresses. I haven't shopping lately, but this post gives me the urge to go. Haha

  12. I love love the dress! I have that H&M jacket but from last year I think. It's in black and white and looks nice for a fairly inexpensive purchase. I have the divided grey jacket in a size 2. I've been looking for a casual jacket like that in grey and was excited to find it. I've already worn it quite a few times.

I put the skirt on hold just to try out. We'll see.

  13. I wonder if you didn't possibly just come across a shoddily made version of the Boucle skirt? I purchased mine a couple weeks back, and the hem isn't as uneven as yours looks! I think this is just a testament to H&M's temperamental quality -- it's really luck of the draw. I remember I once tried on a simple ruched shirt from there once, and didn't buy it, only to purchase it later (the second time, without trying it on). It fit terribly!

That said, I love that LBD - what a great silhouette.

  14. Oh! I'm totally in love with the last blouse in mauve. I've been pining for a blouse like that for a while and I NEED to go to H&M soon!

  15. #1 - I love that! I couldn't find size 2 at the store I went to, but I'll definitely be getting it if I see it again.

#2 - This was the jacket I was describing to you in the other post! I got it and have worn it a few times. Then I saw the matching skirt and bought that too. I already have my blog posts scheduled so you'll be seeing them separately. I think I might keep the skirt & return the jacket.

#3 - I love the colour, but never noticed the uneven bottom when I saw it on Annie's blog.

#4 - Cute, but I like the one you got last year. Less boring. : )

#5 - Tried that and thought the material was cheap as well. MAYBE if it went on sale, but by then, the sizes will be gone.

  16. My H&M is super slow to receive new items, so it's always a treat to see what's upcoming. I was pleasantly surprised when you showed a peplum skirt (?) last year, but now I can see why you like this silhouette. You own peplum like how Elle owns scallops :)

Would your Chanel-esque jacket happen to be this F21 one? :) :) I ordered it but shipping is going to take awhile.

  17. Absolutely love the dress! Great choice!

  18. I am in the same boat as Cee. My closest H&M doesn't get too many items. It's sad.

Just curious, what does your closet look like?

  19. I am excited about that LBD...I hope I can find it in sz 2 soon! I have 4 H&M's around me and sometimes I go to all of them to find one item!

  20. That first dress is STUNNING on you! Love it!

  21. You're smokin' hot in that peplum dress! It's perfect for you!

  22. The peplum dress looks lovely on you, Jean! It's perfect for the upcoming holidays. I don't have many occasions to wear an evening dress anymore. Otherwise, I would be tempted to get this dress. It fits you like a glove. I've seen other items in store too but wasn't in love with any of them.

Can't wait to see your Chanel-esque jacket =)

  23. That dress looks amazing! What an awesome find for only $30. It wouldn't work on me because my hips are big enough, but it looks so good on you :)

It's such a pity that skirt is so weird and short. I would love it if it was as long in the front as it is in the back, even with the weird slit.

It's so sad looking at your reviews of things and knowing I can't get them even if I want to because of my country! :(

  24. I love the peplum dress on you. Peplum has always looked a bit clownish in 2D on websites imo, it definitely doesn't look like that in real life when you're modeling it. Great pick!

  25. Ooh, the peplum dress looks great! I have always been afraid of them, but now I'm thinking I should give it a try! I also love the front-placket blouse... It does look like the one from AT. A great alternative!

  26. The peplum dress fits you PERFECTLY! great find:)!

  27. Love the peplum dress on you - looks amazing with the pearl necklace you're wearing.

I've been looking for a Chanel-esque jacket too - I think I've found one online at F21 (black and white tweed with a flower pin)...I'll have to see how it fits once I get it.

I picked up 2 lovely dresses at H&M recently (though I haven't had a chance to do OOTDs with them). A cream lace dress and a navy button front dress with a horse print.

  28. The peplum dress looks incredible on you!

PS Are you wearing flats? I would love to see more suggestions/posts about flat shoes. For instance, some of my pants are hemmed for heel-wearing, but they're too long for flats, which I prefer to wear when I commute by subway to work. It presents a problem finding the right footwear sometimes.

  29. That peplum dress makes me think of the 80s ... but in a good way.

I hope you can make a post about wearing pearls. I always admire them on others but can't figure out how to make them work on myself.

  30. Wow! That peplum dress looks like perfection on you! All the stuff at H&M I've been liking are on the high end (like Zara prices now). I have gotten a couple of fun jacket/coats for a good deal.

  36. So glad you purchased that H&M dress - it looks gorgeous on you! (And I love peplum dresses/skirts! They have so much character!) Can't wait to see your Chanel-esque purchase!

  37. Nice score, Jean! Not only do you look adorable in the dress but you also found an occasional piece with a price that makes sense. Cocktail dresses are tough because they are usually so pricey and normally people don't want to wear the same one all the time! That is why it is great you were able to score one for $30. It looks like you found it in a vintage shop or something.

Have not been in H&M lately, but as I said before, H&M hit it out of the park this season. I got a gorgeous orange A-line shift dress plus a navy&black brocade-y/jacquard floral pencil skirt. The orange dress was swingy but the pencil skirt (which also came in a dress) fit so snugly that I had to size up! I was surprised that no other petites found it or snagged it. I also got two sweaterdresses (the ones that they were featuring in the ads) - the size 2 was roomy so I can see why tiny petites might not have bothered.

The side slit is so funny! Why bother if the slit is going to be so tiny? I entered the workforce in 1999 when this look was the rage - the slits were longer though and boy did they look dated shortly thereafter! Looking back, they must have looked pretty ridiculous back then too.

  38. Since you're a HauteLook lover too, I thought I'd let you know that today's Plum District deal is $25 for $50 to spend at HauteLook (good until 2/8/2012)! The deal will end this Saturday.

Great H&M dress! Love your blog!

  39. love the dress! best thing about peplums is that 1) creates curves
    2) hides your gut

  42. Jean, I just found your blog and am loving it! My girlfriends and I have all been talking about this lately, and I feel like it's something you could totally answer for us - how do you dress to commute to work in the winter on public transportation??

We are California girls dealing with our first, working world Chicago winter, and have no idea what we are doing. Do you wear snow boots to the office and just keep some pumps there to change into? How do you wear pants since they would just get all wrinkled from stuffing them in your boots? Are skirts/dresses the better option? Overall, how do you keep from looking ridiculous?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I would never have tried on a peplum dress, especially with an asymmetrical shoulder. But this dress looks lovely on you. I like the exposed shoulder in the back too! :)

I don't really like the quality of H&M blazers, bu they photograph really well. Maybe I should give them a second chance.

Are you going to do a Goyard reveal? :)

  44. H&M has great little pieces right now! I love that dress and jacket on you! Great LBD to add to the closet!

  45. @Lesa Thank you for thinking of me!

@Anonymous I've been getting a lot of requests for this topic so I hope to do a post soon! For me personally I just avoid pants altogether, and wear black rainboots in the winter when it's raining or snowing outside. I'm looking for a pair of sleek black leather flat boots to commute in when it's cold and dry outside. ANd yes I always change into pumps at the office to avoid ruining them while commuting : )

@Susan It's coming, it's coming ; ) And I agree, most H&m blazers are not the best quality, but for the price and fit it's not bad at all.

  46. that peplum dress looks amazing on you! i'm glad you purchased it. i'm also glad you didn't purchase the pink tweed jacket. looks like something my aunt would've bought me and forced me to wear back in middle school. love the crinkly blouses, although not for that price. an h&m finally opens in our state tomorrow so i'm really excited!

  47. I love that peplum dress! Sadly, neither of my stores have it :( If anyone comes across a size 2 this weekend, I'd love to buy it!

  48. Is everyone doing a tweed jacket like that? Banana had one for S/S 2011, Coach a few months ago and I saw one at Zara too. As for H&M in general, I find that it's a hit and miss. A lot of the pieces just aren't that great, both in cut and quality. I have found a few that I like (and have bought), but I've found that other similarly-priced stores were better...for me, anyway.

p.s. Most (all?) of the pieces in the Versace for H&M collection start at size 4. I hear that it's sized smaller than usual.

  49. I really like the first two pictures! The Chanel Style jacket is just amazing! =)
