Blouse: Gap Tie-Neck Blouse sz XSP (also in mustard)
Pants: J.Crew Bi-Stretch Wool Minnie sz 00P (bah, unflattering, going back...)
Belt: H&M sz XS Shoes: Louboutin Simple 100 Pumps sz 35
The sale: Today through Sunday, Gap is having 35% off everything in stores and online with code GAPCHIC. If you're shopping in-store, you can get an extra 5% off using your Gap/BR/ON card. If you're shopping online, Ebates (referral link) is giving 10% increased cash back. Here are my picks, all around $30 or less after promos/cash back:
1. Gap Tie-Neck Blouse, available online in petites. Ties can be worn hanging down scarf-style, or looped in a big bow. I like that they add interest when layered under a plain cardigan or blazer. The material is a bit unusual - slightly coarse, but still comfortable.
I got this blouse last month and wore it a few times already. Each time, someone has given it a half-compliment (never a gushing compliment, but at least there is interest) and asked where it was from. The smallest size available is XSP - a little roomy on me, but nothing that DIY slimming doesn't fix. I'll show it again soon, post-alterations.
2. Dropped-Shoulder Dolman Sweater in XS regular, no petites. This comes in 3 colors, but my fave is "sulphur" - it's very neon in person and I love it. Material is light and comfy but thin, so you can see my bra outline here. I wavered on this in-store, but ended up picking it up online with 35% off + 10% ebates = $29.25.
3. Shirred Shoulder Blouse, available online in petites. I am trying on an XS regular in sand brown. Although most Gap blouses are 100% polyester, the drape and cut of the polyester is nice. Good drape can help conceal the fact that something is big on you, whereas stiffer fabrics will poof out or be boxy. I came home and ordered XS Petite online for $23.40 after sales and ebates. If you can fit regular sizing, it's cheaper in-store (around $17 after the promo).
4. Raw-edge Henley Shirt in XS regular, no petites. Only about $18 after promos! This shirt is less stuffy in-person than it appears online. There are many features that I like: shoulder epaulets with shirring detail, raw-edge layers along the front button placket, and again - nice drape for a polyester material.
They styled all the shirts by tightly rolling up the sleeves, so I didn't check how long the sleeves really were. I passed on this one, but it could look very nice on someone a size up.
Readers - Have you tried on any blouses from Gap lately?

how'd you get such clear night shots? great! i really love your necklace you wore while trying on tops
ReplyDeleteI love the first blouse with the bow on you and the drapey green blouse is great, too. I might have to try that one myself. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI like the yellow top the best:-)
ReplyDeleteThat tie-neck blouse is so cute! Looks so cute and delicate. I love the nude pumps that you wore with them..... :)
ReplyDeleteI have the green blouse! I loveeeeeeeeeeeee it. I've worn it so many times already. I like the oversized fit : )
ReplyDeleteI was just looking at the GAP legging cords. I LOVE skinny cords. Have you tried them slash would you suggest them for someone about your size? (We are probably the same size). Thanksss :)
ReplyDeletejean-- i love all the blouses you picked out!! the first one with the tie... i was going to say it's big but i see that you're getting it altered so can't wait to see it after. i love sweaters and blouses, i'm off to gap now!
ReplyDeletei sold a lot of my stuff today at crossroads so i must replenish my closet....hahhaha!
oh one last comment before i leave, i think those minnies fit better than the h&m mustard pants.
I almost bought that Gap blouse on the top, but in a different color. Now I feel bad that I didn't get it! It looks perfect on you, though.
ReplyDeletethe tie-neck blouse looks great on you and the bow is so cute!
ReplyDeleteEven if you don't like the fit, I really love the material of the JCrew minnies! Reminds me of the LOFT equestrian pants. You'll have to share how you do your DIY slimming on that blouse. Most of my blouses need it. I have a bunch of returns to make tomorrow (oh the joys of online shopping), so I definitely want to check out the Henley shirt. I love the epaulettes!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, when I returned GAP jeggings from their last sale the cashier was shocked for how good a deal I got on them lol.
i was at gap today and saw the henley shirts but i had passed on it.
ReplyDeleteyou look great as always but i really like the tie-neck blouse and sulphur sweater on you. good picks!
I actually really like the Raw Edge Henley shirt on you - I think maybe the color gives it an edge over the Shirred Shoulder Blouse.
ReplyDeleteI so heart your necklace and once my fingers stop being chubby swollen things, I am going to try my hand at a DIY version :)
all of these blouses look so pretty on you! great picks!
ReplyDeletenumber 1 and 3 are my faves! The bow in 1 is too cute on you! Love the night photography too, so sharp and you're stunning!
ReplyDeleteI really like your choices. I buy from GAP all the time and they had a really good sale yesterday.

Where did you get those fantastic shorts?
ReplyDeleteI got 1 and 4 for twenty each I love both of them!
ReplyDeleteI have that tie-neck blouse! I usually have a hard time tying it into a perfect bow, so I knot it to drape down like a scarf. And you are right about the material... It's coarse, yet still very comfortable! Unfortunately, I bought it all full price-- $60!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering whether a dolman sleeve sweater would be too overwhelming for a petite to pull off, but item 2 shows me otherwise. :) That yellow is lovely too.

Thanks for sharing your Gap picks! So tempted to pick out some items for myself...it's so hard to refrain! lol
ReplyDeletemust agree with ping 100%. for u, I'd totally choose the minnies over the h&m mustard cropped pants.
ReplyDeleteoooh I like the neon slouchy sweater on u.
lastly, sing it with me: who wears short shorts? Jean wears short shorts. hahaha jk I wore my cut offs today too, originally inspired by ping last yr.
I would love to order from GAP, specially now that they have international shipping, but I cannot figure out how much it would cost, and also whether these discounts are applicable for international buyers:(
ReplyDeleteI, too, think those pants fit better than other cropped pants I've seen you in. Unless there is extra material in the thigh area that I'm not seeing.
ReplyDeleteI might check them out for myself. But, even though I'm 95 pounds, they'll probably be like leggings on my body...
@Anonymous Adorable! I haven't tried them yet, but i tried on Crewcuts sz 12 skinny cords (were too short, and not skinny enough) and I thought they were such a nice alternative to jeans for Fall. Now the question is, which color?
ReplyDelete@Ping @AubreyOhDang! @Anonymous Lol, I don't even think those two pants are in the same league to be compared against each other! H&M cropped chino/khaki material pants in $11 which I bought for the nice color, knowing the fit wasn't great. Versus j.Crew $98 pants that need to fit amazingly for the price, but they don't. I'll have to show actual fit pics later but the belt is completely holding these Minnies up, and I'm squirming from how itchy the wool material is.
@Anonymoushehe, you're joking right? These fan-trashy-tastic shorts are from none other than abercrombie kids many many years ago : )
@Anonymous Fantastic deal! I wish I could wear regular sizing because it seems like all of these are marked down lower in-store!
@Megan @ LongLiveClassy After this shirt arrived I seriously searched around online on how to tie a shirt bow because one end of the ties will end up way longer than the other. There needs to be better tutorials out there for the bow-challenged!
@FP It doesn't hurt to fill out a checkout form and try the coupon and see what the final costs and fees are!
I love the raw henley on you - it's gorgeous, and everyone except the first one due to fit, but you're getting that altered, so I'm looking forward to seeing the fit after. The Dolman sweater is pretty awesome too =).. especially that color!
ReplyDeleteAnd on a totally unrelated note, you can really pull off short shorts well :D It looks really good paired with bigger blouses. Gorgeous!
I've been looking for more long sleeved stuff lately - I should check out Gap online.
Oh, and Jean, what pants did you try on with the raw henley? They look khaki colored - is that right? I've been looking for a pair of skinny jeggings/pants that are that color. They look really nicely paired with that green henley!
ReplyDeleteAhh you're tempting me to shop again Jean! I just bought two pairs of the jean leggings from GAP after seeing your previous post. I really like the bow tie blouse and the shirred shoulder blouse on you. I love how the fit looks a bit slimmer than most of their other blouses.
ReplyDeletewhat lipstick is it your wearing on the 1st pic?
ReplyDeletehey jean, could you recommend me any maybelline's color sensational lipsticks or revlon lipsticks?
ReplyDeleteany that you're using? i have the same skin tone as you and just starting using makeup =)
I'm definitely tempted to go shopping again. Dig the casual up hair do you're rocking.
ReplyDeleteWow, is it just me, or is anyone else surprised to see you in cut offs? :) I never thought you would wear something so casual! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThose shorts are great on you! Such a cute look with both tops!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your petite finds!
I just saw the raw-edge henley on Chloe...loving it!
aw darn, just tried to bag the tie-neck blouse and it became sold out! =( Darrrn, it looked like an interesting/different piece to have around! It kind of looks pilgrim-ish, haha, so I think I can see where those half-compliments are coming from, but that makes it appealing when it's styled with a more modern outfit, methinks : ). Good pick!
ReplyDeleteI tried on that tie-neck blouse a while ago, was enamoured, went back to get it, and changed me mind. I keep waffling over it... I love the style but something about the weird fabric just doesn't do it for me. Alas!
ReplyDeletei loved all the blouses on you! i bought the tie neck blouse in golden. But i REALLY love your necklace (pearls etc)!! Where did you get it? it looks great on you and with all the above outfits!
ReplyDeleteWhat necklace are you wearing with the yellow sweater? It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking for something like the j. crew pants. I recommend these: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=57240&pid=760954&mlink=57240,2963291,7&clink=2963291
ReplyDeleteI bought them a few weeks ago when Gap had their pants sale in a 00R. Fit like a glove. If you want to give them a shot, get a 00P because I've been reading your blog around a year now and I'm certain your legs are shorter than mine.
I love the bow-tie and henley blouses!! They're so elegant.

Hi Jean! I'm new to the petite community and I have been stalking your site since I've found you a week ago. I love your sense of style and I'm still kind of trying to develop my own personal style. Btw, how do you store all your accessories such as earrings & necklaces? I tend to pile them up in one place which makes it hard for me to see which ones I should wear at that moment. Please advice! Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteDarn! I bought the tie-neck blouse in that same color last Tuesday...I emailed Gap about a price adjustment and am crossing my fingers. The henley shirt is very pretty, I wish I had noticed it. Your jean shorts do look great, especially with the dolman sweater.
ReplyDeleteI'll second girly girl's request on advice for storing earrings and necklaces. My necklaces are all hanging on the corner of my dresser.
I just picked up that exact same tie neck blouse on Saturday! Can't wait to wear it, instant classic!
ReplyDeleteI have an off topic question for you but couldn't find a contact you link! Do you know when Ann Taylor will be brining back the nude color of the perfect pumps? Reading your blog has made me long for them and right now they only have the blacks/lizard skin grays. Do you know if it's a seasonal thing...?
ReplyDeleteI really like your first blouse! =)
ReplyDelete@grace Hi Grace! They're called the Gummy Legging Jeans and I was trying them on at Gap in size 00 regular.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous It's a discontinued color from Rimmel called Bordeaux...maybe it can be found online on Amazon or ebay still?
@Anonymous Hi there, I haven't ventured into the world of Maybelline or Revlon lipsticks yet. I only use two Revlon glosses and they are more summer colors - the super lustrous glosses in Coral Reef and Pink Pop, both of which I really love. The other lipsticks I use are discontinued Rimmel London colors b/c they were so cheap. If I find flattering colors from the drugstore later I will be sure to share. There are many beauty bloggers (thebeautylookbook does LOTs of lipcolor reviews) with similar asian skin tones, so check them out!
@Erica Haha...I know pockets hanging out longer than the hem of cutoffs = instant nonclassy, but I do love my "j-orts" ; )
@tahitian88 @Steph Thanks! It's old, from Talbot's online outlet.
@M Ah yes, Gap's good ole slim crop pants. I reviewed them earlier last year. They fit ok in 00P and have rave reviews online, but then I looked at a photo of the back view and it was very strange on me.
@girly girl Hi there! Right now all of my necklaces are stored in individual plastic zip loc bags (supposedly to keep cheap metal jewelry from oxidizing quickly) and my earrings are in a jewelry tray from marshalls/TJMaxx's homegoods section. I've been working on a DIY display case for easier access, and will definitely share when/if I finish!
@Vanessa Ah, hope they can give you the adjustment!
@Ghost Hi there, I don't think AT has ever done a true nude yet. They had "porcini' in the past which is more of a taupe gray than a nude. I've emailed them and even harassed on them on Facebook, hehe, for a true nude and they said they would pass the word along (probably didn't) but didn't have any planned in future seasons.
I bought a pair of pants from J.Crew couple of years back when I was still in the States and they were horribly baggy on me (I'm a size 00p too). Their shirts were huge on me too when I tried them on at the stores, so I've never bought anything from there.
ReplyDeleteAbout the bow blouse, I own/sell lots of them. Here's my secret to getting both ends to look more even.
After you've tied the first knot, compare both ends to see which side is shorter. That's the one you'll be holding in place. The longer tie is the one that "goes around". Once you've looped it through, all you need to do is adjust the size of the loops/ends until they match up.
Hope this helps! It's rather difficult trying to explain the process simply without visuals.
Hi Jean! Great blog!! Could you please do a tutorial about how to tie that perfect bow? - It is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI love the mustard top! I also love the necklace you wore with that same top, please do share...would love to have those pearls!
ReplyDeleteJean, thanks for posting your reviews during that fantastic sale. I ended up picking up the Tie-Neck Blouse in "golden plate" after reading your review. It is a great fit for a non-petite item! I would have missed it if it weren't for you.
ReplyDeletecan you show us how you alter your loose-fitting clothes? i.e. slimming it down
ReplyDeletei'm about 4"9' and most tops are too loose for me.
Thanks so much for reviewing the GAP raw-edge henley shirt!!(I love the tie-neck one as well but no sign of it on the uk web store...) Got a size xs in the online sale for £14, bargin! Love your style! Really appreciate sharing your great finds on chic yet budget pieces with us. Brilliant work!!
