Preview: H&M Print Shift & Orange Swing Jacket

H&Mtunic2H&Mtunic
Easily my favorite purchase from last week, I was saving this dress (style # 045676) for post-alteration pics but wanted to share briefly. Runs generously so I'll be doing DIY slimming for this sz 2 (see on Gigi in sz 12). It's so reminiscent of dresses from higher-end contemporary brands, but for a fraction of the price at $39.99 (sign up for H&M's e-newsletter to get a 20% off coupon). I'll be wearing this little shift for many seasons to come!

  4. Lovely color, you will get tons of wear out of this beauty really soon. I am so in love with orange. Saw a skirt on Annie in a similar color. Orange must be a hot trend.

  5. I love it Jean! So Mad Man-esque!

  6. I went to store in Cambridge but did not see this cute little dress at all. it is a very wearable and good match with the jacket.

  7. I love this h&m dress, I saw it over the weekend at my h&m store but they were sold out of size 2. I can't wait for your full review. They also have a button back blouse on the same print which is very pretty too.

  8. Jean, I'm checking with the Newbury store for both the dress and the jacket and they don't seem to know what I'm talking about. I honestly didn't see them in the store yesterday also. Which H&M store did you get the items from (I'm in Boston also)? And the SA seems to want to know what 'department' the items are from too. The style number doesn't seem to help them.

    Thanks much for your help!

  9. Oh how I wish we had a little H&M love here in Austin. I LOVE the orange jacket - it seems to be cut quite well. Can't wait to see the after photos of the dress once it's tailored - you've inspired me to take many of my poorly fitting pieces in for refreshing!

  10. Love that jacket on you! Perfect for fall and summer!

  11. Love this burnt orange color- I bought a skirt in this color and its adorable! I bought both of these pieces but not sure if I am keeping. Fell in love w/the dress after seeing Gigi's post but the dress is huge like you said and I don't know how to sew and def don't want to spend money on alterations. You are lucky you know how to DIY! The jacket is lovely and have a feeling it will be a petite favorite along w/the orange skirt:)

  12. Awesome finds! It does remind me of a DVF dress! This is totally giving off the current seventies trend! I love it!

  13. Love your swing jacket! One quick question: should the swing jacket be just fit or fit loosely (ie. flare out). I can never understand how to wear it right. Thank you in advance!

  14. @cinnyangel I was grabbing lunch and saw a sz 2 (fits 2-4) at downtown crossing, put it on hold for ya under Jean.

  15. I was at H&M yesterday and the jacket was nowhere to be found! Is it possible it hasn't made it to LA yet? Or perhaps they just sold out.

Has anyone else tried on the brown skirt with pockets on the front and a belt? It was cute until I zipped it all the way, and then it was really tight (sz 2).

  16. Jean, thanks so much! Is it the dress or the jacket that you put on hold?

I also just dropped by H&M Newbury and showed your pictures to a floor SA and was shown the items. Turned out the dress *just* came into the store late this morning and the jacket is pretty much sold out. There was a last size 2 jacket, though the register SA was very annoyed at my idea to use the 20% coupon twice for both items, and thus I only got the dress for now :(. Should I try the Downtown Crossing store with the same coupon? I wonder if that coupon number is already in their system somehow...

  17. Hi jean, i have just discovered your blog! Such an useful & informative blog for those that belongs to the "petite" group, which includes me as well :) Love ur blog so much! I have a question I hope you could help. I'm buying a "petite" dress from Asos but i'm not sure which size suits me. I'm 5", 44kg. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! :)

  18. @cinnyangel Whoops! Sorry, the sz 2 in the dress is on hold at downtown crossing under Jean. I guess it's up for grabs for anyone else who is interested! Didn't see any jackets.

Thank you everyone else for your comments - will try and respond later this evening!

  19. I just called the Downtown Crossing location and they said you put a top on hold for me :P. They definitely described the 'dress', but they see it as a 'top', and I suppose that explains the 'strange' fit :). Thanks again Jean!

  20. I was looking for the beige/navy stripe skirt and the pocket T you posted about in your review, but our local H&M didn't have them, and the nearest other store is about 40 minutes away (not worth it).

I wish I could find it... I was hoping to break my shopping ban on those pieces and then reinstate it immediately.

I love the orange on you. You and Khatu do color so well. A skill I have yet to pick up.

  21. I am no longer impressed with the sleeve length! ;p

  22. What an adorable jacket, it seriously looks like something we'd find from Tory Burch for 4 or 5 times the price. I actually didn't see this jacket at the H&M on Michigan Avenue... It may have already sold out!

  23. I hate a love/hate for your teaser/preview posts. Love how quick you are about showcasing new items so I know what to expect for when I go shopping. Hate that we only see 1-2 photos. Oh I'm such a hypocrite since that's about all the photos I put up lol. But the difference is, your photos are beautiful so I can not wait to see more :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Um... I love the jacket too, but I think it's the dress/top (?) that Jean mentioned to be like a Tory Burch piece?

  25. Hi Jean! I'm a longtime reader and ADORE your blog. I'm a few inches taller but I find helpful tips from your blog all the time, especially your tips on dressing for the workplace!

I wanted to comment to 1) Tell you how much I love your blog and your helpful videos and 2) Tell you that I recently came across a blogger who seems to be outright copying you. I was really surprised at how obvious it was. Even things like layout and blog style! If you could plagiarize a blog I think hers would be plagiarizing yours.

Please excuse me for being anonymous (my name's Michelle), and please feel free to moderate/not publish this comment as I would not want to cause drama for you! :) Part of me thinks she needs to be called out but I also understand that stirring up controversy might not be what you want at all. Just wanted to send my support :) I'm behind you 100% Jean!!

  26. So you did end up buying the H&M Orange Swing Jacket? What prompted the change in mind? It's so cute by the way and I love the shift dress too. Beautiful pattern and the sleeves are too cute!

  27. @Vanessa and @sarahp I've learned that all H&Ms get merchandise at a different pace, and some of the smaller ones may just never get the items. Downtown crossing has the best selection, and that's where I saw this dress first. They tend to restock if sizes immediately sell out, so I usually call first to put one on hold before making the trip.

@Claud Claud i can totally see you in this dress. I saw the cropped button back blouse too and excitedly tried it on, but it did not look good on me, whether with pants or tucked into skirts.

@Michelle After they see how popular the Houston store is, I sure hope they'll expand to Austin! Also their online US store is supposed to launch early 2012 : )

@cici Fitting swing jackets is really tricky. They should not be snug across the chest like regular blazers. This jacket is cut slim in the torso which makes the swing part hard, and if you size up then the shoulders could be too big. I would just find one with shoulders that fit nicely, and wear it unbuttoned if the chest is snug.

@jing Hi Jing, so if 44kg is about 97 pounds, I would say you might be a Petite 2 in ASOS. It wouldn't hurt to try on a 2 and 4 and then return the one that doesn't fit, but make extra sure you're ordering from Petite and not regular as it does make a difference.

  28. As soon as I saw your post, I fell in love with the print and ran to my nearest H&M. I ended up picking up the button back blouse with the same print. Unfortunately, they did not carry the orange jacket here (Mission Viejo, CA) so I am hoping they will have it in the next few days. I totally admire your style!

    ReplyDelete
  29. @cinnyangel I wonder if they just looked at it really hastily because there IS a top in the same exact print, but for $24.95 or something. That'd be crazy if this is supposed to be a top - I understand "tunic length" but this is pretty long!

@Mae Lu That's such a bummer! You should call next time before wasting time on a visit. THey're both in the "everyday basics" collection if that helps. Breaking a shopping ban to spend $13 on a full outfit isn't too shabby!

@B.Inspired You're right, I didn't think of it but the jacket is very reminiscent of TB style - she even has this orange color as one of her signature shades!

@Cee Oh Cee, don't sell yourself short - I love your to the point posts although I wouldn't mind some extra shots and detail pics (maybe even a face shot once in a while)!

@Anonymous Michelle - Thank you so much for your kind words and support. I've tried to address this in the past without success, but in the end, blogging to me is about the friendships I make with readers/fellow bloggers and also the inspiration and suggestions I garner from you guys. It's not worth it to let the positive aspects be clouded by something trivial : )

@Kristin I went home and kept on thinking about it, and realized that it was a much more versatile piece than I originally imagined. Also, being work friendly = bonus points! I got it with a 20% off coupon so there were slight savings, and already wore it to work today over a pencil dress.

@Anonymous Do you have Twitter or are you on the AlterationsNeeded forum? Because I'd love to see how you style it! i loved the top and immediately ran to try it on, but it fit differently and I could only see myself wearing it with skinny bottoms. I love the button-back detail though and it was a great price for a piece that looks much more expensive. As for the orange jacket, only the stores that stock H&M's "trend" line will have it...so ask your store if they do : )

  30. I tried on that orange blazer but it looked horrible on me. It looks lovely on you though!

  31. Thank you for posting your purchases so quickly. Your blog is a must read for me.

  32. I know Jean. I am waiting for your DIY and would like to try it out myself - definitely wearing this as a dress :). Though out of curiosity, and just for some extra info, I came back to the Newbury store after work, pointed to the dress to ask 2 separate SAs if that was a top or dress - both said it was a top, though it could be worn as a dress because of the length, but definitely a top. When I asked what they thought people wore with that 'top', they said probably tights...

  33. Hi Jean! I have a question for you about the swing jacket...does the placket lay flat when you close it? I snagged the 2 and a 4 and am deciding which to keep. The 2 fits the shoulders but is a tad tight over the chest; the 4 fits the chest better but is too loose in the shoulder.... Interestingly, the front placket of both jackets does not lie "flat" when closed...even with the larger 4 that is not tight at all over the chest.

So, I have the option of keeping the better-fiting 2 and wearing it open or sticking with the 4...argh. Waiting to get a 2nd opinion form a friend.

Anyway, if I do return the 2 and/or 4, , I will probably return it to Downtown Crossing in Boston...if any readers want me to put the returned item on hold for them let me know annapurna.bf@gmail.com

  34. Jean, you are so great about replying! Anyway, the problem was that the H&M closest to me doesn't carry the trend line. I was able to get the jacket yesterday at a different store using the coupon (thank you for the tip). I guess not that many people use them because the employees hadn't even seen one before.

I also read the comment that Anonymous Michelle made about the other blog. It intrigued me so I took a look--I think there's definitely a point, but you take a good attitude about it. Isn't imitation supposed to be a form of flattery?

  35. Stopped by H&M today and I didn't see this jacket, but I saw a ton of gorgeous dresses for only $10. :)

  36. I just got the dress in size 2! I'm still debating whether I should keep it or not since its a bit big and I need to get it tailored, but I've never done that and I'm nervous to take it in, lol. (And also because I spent a chunk at Zara and I'm studying in Shanghai in a few weeks...)

  39. Hi Jean, could you please do a post on styling this dress for work? I am not sure i ca style it without looking like its too casual. Same for the dot pleated skirt. i love both pieces but can only buy work clothes. thank you in advance. A.

  40. Hi Jean, I just started reading your blog and I love your classic style. I recently came across the same printed dress at H&M and purchased both size 2 and 4. The size 2 is perfect, width and length, however the back of the shoulders is a tad tight so I purchased the size 4. Just wondering if you experienced any shrinkage in the dress after washing it. I always wash in cold water and hang dry. If there is some shrinkage, I will keep the 4. Would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @Anonymous Hi there - I have never machine dried this dress, so have experienced no shrinkage. I hand washed it once and just let it hang dry. It fits the same like it always did. Good luck deciding on the size! HOpe you got this for a good sale price.

@Anonymous Hi there, unless you are shorter than me (5 ft tall) I unfortunately think this is too short for work! WHen I sit down the hem comes up pretty short. If you work in a casual environment, you can do opaque tights (like gray or navy) with this dress.
