H&M Fall Update - Pretty accessories and fitting-room reviews

HMFall
Mustard "suede-y" belt, $5.95 and Orange & gold belt with adjustable back, $12.95.

It seems that no matter where I work, I'm steps away from an H&M. I popped in a few times this week but left with just two belts, which I used a coupon on. While in store, I made sure the orange was the same color as the swing jacket, and couldn't resist wearing them together today (twitpic).
Above: Clutch-crossbody bag in 3 colors (seen here). Below: Loved these loafer pumps, but $50 & sz 35 too big.
There's tons of lace items in every store right now, but I'm being cautious. It's easy for lace to be uncomfortable (itchy, not breathable) and also to look cheap. I've tried on so many lace pieces from various retailers recently, and nothing has been "right" so far.

This material below comes in blouse and A-line dress form, in both ivory and navy blue. The blouse ($24.95) was pretty on the rack, but looked grandma-ish on and was poofy in the back when tucked in. The lace is on the stiffer side. It's the exact same cut as this print top, with a row of buttons going down the back.
There's also a softer lace, that comes in black, ivory, and gray. It comes in sheath dress form (pictured below), a pencil skirt, as well as a strapless dress. The lace is stretchy, the waist is elastic, and the shape gives off the illusion of curves. I passed because I don't need it, but a very nice LBD option for $34.95.
There was also a long navy blazer which reminded me in length of the Aritzia one, except that one was a wool blend and this one is knit. It has big suede-y brown elbow pads and striped lining. $49.95 correction, $39.95!
Lastly, I tried on an orange skirt (also in navy) that fit tiny in sz 2. The cotton-like material was too wrinkle-prone for me, but I just wanted to show the fit and slight A-line cut. $24.95 includes a brown braided belt, which goes nicely with a variety of things.
Readers - get anything good at H&M recently?

  1. I've been looking for elbow patched tops for the past year, but never found anything I *loved*. I saw this blazer and liked how it looked, but the material felt cheap and I didn't like the buttons. Maybe if it was on sale...

  2. Ok, Jean, it's not fair you live near one... Online shopping isn't even available where I live. Is that sad? I think so. I'm jealous!

  4. I cannot even describe how much I've wanted those loafer pumps ever since I saw them on the H&M website, but as I am now in Texas and live nowhere near a store, I've just been resigning myself to hoping that maybe someday they'll show up on eBay (and hopefully not at too much of a markup!). How was the material and quality? Did they fit a little big, do you think?

The black lace makes you look so elegantly curvy! And the orange skirt reminds me a little of the J. Crew wool bell skirt from this past winter. It looks nice on you -- despite the wrinkles!

  5. I tried on that knit blazer (hello, elbow patches!) in every color in the hopes at least one would look good on me. I really tried. But it was just too long and looked really weird on me, especially from the back. Darn you and your too long blazers, H&M!

  6. Aren't colours this coming season GORGEOUS? I'm in love with those cross body bags, but I have to stop myself... I've spent a bit already in Montreal and really should be using whatever I have left for that camera that I've been wanting to get...

  7. you look great in that LBD. great reviews. i really like the accessories. i'll have to stop in an H&M tomorrow. thanks! ;)

  8. @CynthiaC Yes! Gorgeous colors, and it seems like many of us are experimenting more than in our past years of blogging.

@Alterations Needed Aha, I knew you'd be drawn to the patches ; ) But yes, much too long for us and a bit frumpy.

@Vivian Soon! Supposedly early next year : )

@The Little Dust Princess It did feel cheap (compared to the red knit one I have from a year ago) and I thought the elbow patches were too big!

@aetherbound I rarely if ever look at shoes at H&M because I'm trying to stay away from cheap quality shoes, but I was seriously drawn to these and ran all around until I found a sz 35. They were fairly comfortable, but a sz 35 definitely fit like a 5.5-6 and slipped off my feet. Quality is typical of H&M shoes - synthetic materials and slight issues with workmanship, but I paid $40 for booties from there last Fall and wore them every week for two seasons. After I walked around in these loafers, several women came to ask where they were and commented on how great they looked, which made me want to get them more ; ) But alas, they were $50 which I truly think is steep for H&M shoes. If you really love the style and don't mind paying that much, maybe post a request in the Item Request thread on forum.alterationsneeded.com and hopefully someone may pick it up for you!

@Anonymous Thank you! And I wonder if their sign up for email promo is still going on on the hm.com website. You get a 20% off coupon if you do.

  9. "It seems that no matter where I work, I'm steps away from an H&M." Jealous! I'm at least a 30 min drive from my H&M, which is probably good for my wallet. Love how the belt matches your swing jacket! I also really like how the blazer fits you. I don't have an Aritzia near me but they seem too pricey for me, so I think I'm going to try and find this blazer this weekend. I like elbow patches. I bought an H&M b&w striped sweater with brown elbow patches, though sadly the patches fall under my elbows due to my short arms.

  10. I love the accessories! H&M is one of my favorite places to pick up belts and small bags. I love the lace sheath dress on you - it really flatters your figure. It's too bad you passed on it. The navy blazer is really cute too! I may have to keep my eyes open for it at my H&M store :)

  11. This was such a fun post, it was like shopping from my living room and seeing it on a person was more fun that stock photos.

  12. Aah, I wish I lived near an H&M! I studied abroad in Italy for 3 months, and made sure to get my fill of H&M then, haha!

  13. I love that orange belt.. was so happy to read that it's adjustable. I hate the dangly part of belts!

  14. those belts are beautiful - being from the midwest, autumn, by far is my fave season. I loved the look and fit of the navy blazer...that is until I saw the suede elbow patches which felt very cheap and made it look a bit tacky in my opinion. Also, waiting until my store gets in those cognac loafers. At $50 I am eager to atleast check them out b/c they are super cute.

sidenote request: you seem very much like a skirt gal and am wondering if you can do more postings with pants. :) My office is biz casual (more casual than formal) and rarely, if ever, do I wear a skirt to work. Thanks

  16. LOVE H&M! I especially like their blazers and accessories. By the way, I love the belts (especially the colors)!

  17. I really love the fit of the navy blazer on you. I think it is much nicer than the more expensive Aritzia bf blazer.

  18. Does your H&M actually stock size 35 shoes? Mine has size "US 5" shoes, but they're actually Euro size 36.

  19. Cute belt finds!

Nothing on my last trip there. I get easily discouraged trying to sort through everything!

I am so glad menswear-inspired heels are still in style. :)

Regarding Twitter...I think I would be more likely to have one if I had a smart phone. When I am out and find a deal, I just want to tell all you girls! My husband has an iPhone, but gets a little grumpy if I use his Internet for too long: "You are wasting the battery!" Me-"I won't use it all, re-charge when we get home" Him-"It still depletes its lifespan" Lol! :p

  20. it's pretty bad that I work right across from the mall, so during lunch break i sneak over to HM every once in awhile. Going there today to check out their belts! :D

  21. Once again I am having an H&M envy. I think that blazer looks great even though it is a tad bit long. I like many pieces that you pick. Darn it, they better open one here!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Do you know where we can get that lace sheath dress if we don't have an H&M near us? I've been looking for an LBD, but i seriously cannot find one that fits my tiny figure! I couldn't find it online!

  23. I looove H&M! I actually just bought an amazing pair of pants there, they are so 70s and I adore them! I posted them up on my blog here: http://girlmemetic.blogspot.com/2011/08/that-70s-style.html

I'm also in love with all the microsuede they're doing right now, so fun!

  24. i never go to H&M (I hate the layout of the store here) but because of you I'm going to go hunt down that navy blazer today! loves it! Hope you can take off those elbow patches though, not a huge fan.

  25. I want the belts! I love the colors. I got the last skirt a couple of weeks ago but in a tan color. I love the fit but it does get wrinkled easily. Still, it's cute and I like the belt too. Ha, I didn't even try on that navy blazer because I thought it would be too long but it looks cute on. Seems like every time I go I find something.

I also got a plain but good wardrobe staple blue cardigan. Size 2 from divided section fits very small, and it's not long either.

  26. Last weekend I went to H&M and bought that blue blazer you tried on. I love the fit but am scared that it'll stretch out weirdly very quickly. Weird thing is though that my store sold them for $39.95. Is it usual for H&M price to differ in different stores? I bought mine at the Santana row store in the SF Bay Area

  27. I got the navy knit blazer. I used my 20% off coupon. Love it!!! However, I wish I kept last fall's version w/1 button and shorter in length, but I returned it & then regretted it so this version will have to do.

Really diggin' that orange belt and how it's adjustable and the hook is clever. I wonder if it comes in any other color. I'll be on the lookout.

Saw those lace pieces. Blegh. I thought the lace wasn't pretty and kind of rough. skip!

this is random and I can't believe I tried it on, but I saw this green jumpsuit w/a waist tie. hahaha, it actually looked awesome on. definitely smthg khatu could pull off. it just didn't fit my style.

  28. Love the belts! Picked them out a few days ago because I've been wanting to try out colored belts ever since reading your blog. There was also a lime belt made of real leather, but it requires hole punching ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Jean again, I think the blazer looks really good on you--you think it's too long?

@Ravina Sniper--I checked out your picture. Those pants do look awesome on you.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @jeanna I almost never wear pants for the sole reason that they drag on the ground when I'm commuting in flats! But do you read Petite Early Morning Style? Callandra is often in pants and she looks awesome in all her ensembles!

@throughkseyes Oops! Good catch...I just went to look at a pair of H&M shoes I own and sure enough they are 36, US 5. Which doesn't seem right. I wear a 35 or 35.5 in euro brands, and a US 5, so I don't know why they converted a US 5 as a euro 36. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!

@Michelle Aww! You must get a smart phone soon and when you do you can tweet us pics of your finds : )

@Anonymous Until their online store opens in early 2012, the only suggestion I have is to go on the Alterations Needed forum (forum.alterationsneeded.com) and post a request in the "Item Requests" thread. Good luck!

    @Ravina Sniper Looks great, Ravina!

@Vanessa Even if you just wear that skirt a few times, the belt will make the price worth it. I have F21 shorts that I have NEVER worn, but the belt became a wardrobe staple : )

@Victoria Whoopsies, good catch! The prices should all be the same, but SALE prices can differ. I just made a typo here, thanks for letting me know : )

@Vanessa It seems like without heels, I personally cannot wear blazers longer than my upper hipbone. With heels it's perfectly fine at that length, plus other women can pull off the look better than me!

  31. Thanks for the review! I'm heading to H&M this weekend. It is disappointing that their shoes run so large- I get excited every time I see the sz. 5s, but they're always too big. I'd love to get one of the belts and the navy version of that skirt! I love when skirts have belt loops. Skirts never seem to look right on me without a belt.

  32. I love the skinny belts!! I didn't see them on my last trip. I must check again!

-Also, on the 11th I included the same blazer in a posting (you can check it out here: http://preponderance-of-fashion.blogspot.com/2011/08/fitting-room-fashion.html)

I went back for it in the smaller size to remedy the back panel situation and given the stretch, the smaller size hugs my waist better.

    Thanks for sharing! xoxo

  33. Thanks for posting these belts! I always have trouble finding belts small enough to fit, so I'm glad H&M has some options!

  34. H&M opened their first Texas store yesterday (in Dallas). I just went this afternoon, after waiting 10 minutes to get in and another 30 to get into the dressing room, I walked away with several things. A nice braided red belt (did not see the one above, really cute striped button up shirt, a black vest, a high waist knee length skirt, and a few other things. I need to take some pictures to post on fit review.

  35. oh wow... such a nice blazer and fits you nicely! It doesn't fit my friend so nicely because it look so big on her even though I'm sure she got the smallest size there was a couple months ago. I love H&M =] It used to be much cheaper and affordable but the prices are reasonable and not so dead on expensive which is okay to me.

  36. Banana Republic has a white lace dress in its Mad Men collection, and Anthropologize has one called the Horkelia shift. I got one a few weeks ago from Lands End Canvas, but I think it's sold out now.

  37. Check out the Nine West Abalene or Unmixed for very similar loafer pumps. They are a bit pricey compared to H&M but are of much better quality in my opinion. Both styles come in sizes as small as 5. The Abalene comes in narrow widths too!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cute finds! I was so disappointed to not find anything I loved when I visited (twice!) this week. :( Anything I did like was sold out in small sizes.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I just bought that blue blazer on my last trip to H&M Jean! Totally love it! It has such special details too ;)

  40. I'm going to have to drop by H&M eventually to see all the newest pieces - love the belts you picked up!

I've been busy buying things for a hiking trip, so no pretty frilly things for a while for my wallet... but I've made a mental note of what I should check for when I get there. Those loafers look so cute, i may have to take peek. The price for them is a bit @_@, but it'd be nice to see what they look like in person.

That crossbody clutch that you have been sporting lately looks so classy I may have to pick one up!

  41. I am LOVING that blazer from H&M. However, it looks a lot like the Zara one.

  42. It wasn't until your post that I caved in and headed to H&M for some retail therapy. I was eyeing the same loafer pumps for some time -- was disappointed in the quality and the large fit.

Ended up with a fun zipper-back dress and a cardi for the man:

  43. I haven't bought anything from the autumn collection yet, though the catalogue is full of inspiration. I was eyeing this cute tweed blazer (available here at the UK online shop), but like a lot of H&M jackets it's a bit too short in the body and sleeves for me; I think it could be great for someone with petite proportions.

  44. I wanted to comment on the orange H & M skirt.

    I'm 5'2" and generally wear a size 2/4.

For this skirt I tired on the 4. Way too small, the 6, again too small. The size 8 fit perfect.

I don't know if Canadian sizing is different from the US but my self-esteem took a real hit with a size 8.

I really debated the purchase. The size and a fabric that wrinkles easily were huge negatives. I actually did purchase for 2 reasons; (1) price was good (only $CAN 29.95) and (2) I have no access to the awesome Ann Taylor orange skirt with the exposed side zipper that I desperately want as part of my F/W 2011 wardrobe.

I'm wearing the skirt today with a chambray linen button down shirt. I'm a hot mess of wrinkles but I'm loving the orange.

Totally love your blog. Terrific advice for petite girls.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Deirdre- I picked up the skirt in tan and am wearing mine today. Despite being a hot mess of wrinkles, I've already worn mine several times. I didn't have a tan skirt yet and the style is so cute.
