Petite Fashion Challenge #4: "Holiday Party"

This edition of Petite Fashion Challenge (PFC) is hosted by Curls and Pearls. Thank you Curls for hosting! Be sure to visit her blog to see all the other participants' outfits. I've already seen a few tonight and they are AMAZING!

The challenge: "Create a holiday party look using festive colors and/or holiday pieces without looking like a greeting card."
This was a timely challenge for me as I have two holiday parties this week...ho ho ho. I'm sorry guys, I took the easy way out again and used little creativity. After seeing the challenge I made a beeline for my closet and blew off the dust on the only remotely festive item I have. I splurged on this silk dress during J.Crew's winter 2009 final sale, then coughed up $40 more to get it altered all-around.

Dress: J.Crew Terra Paisley shift 0P (see before alterations here)
Accessories: Forever 21 - olive tights ($3.50), olive earrings ($4.95), bow headband ($1.50)

Oh how I wish I had sexy shoes to jazz up this outfit. Alas I shop more for practicality and less for fun, so I only have these plain pumps. The olive tights (see post here) and belt looping are inspired by Anh of 9-to-5 chic. I only did black and gray tights until she got me pumped for the robin hood look this Fall. The belt looping is a simple tip Anh shared earlier this year which should come in handy for many petites...no one likes floppy ends!

For petites who want cute holiday dresses on a budget, I think Target juniors dresses in XS are a decent choice. I saw a lot of lace and ruffles during my last visit, but the bf whisked me out the door before I could make it to the fitting room. Below are some of my picks, all just $20 plus there's always a $5 off online coupon and 3% cashback with ebates.

Refer to this post from one year ago to see how a Target juniors XS fits on me.

Readers - what are you ladies donning for holiday parties this year?

  3. I remember this dress (!), and it's perfect for the holidays (I simply love the print). I love how you accentuated the colors with the olive tones. Lol, so what you are wearing to the other holiday party? You weren't going to repeat the same outfit for both parties, were you? :)

  4. oooh I like that dress! And so cute pairing it with olive! Love the bow headband on you, did you try the bump it with it? I saw your talk on twitter :P

  6. I shop more for practicality too...unfortunately my budget won't allow for more "fun". You still look great even with the plain pumps though!

  7. Oh I love the beautiful paisley print of this dress. Blue and gold together are just gorgeous. Jcrew 0P was that big on you? unbelievable. Now it fits so perfectly! You can get so much wear out of this dress. Love it!

  8. Hmmm...olive tights huh??? I'm a tight newbie, but loving them so far. Olive might be my next color. =)

Glad to see the J.Crew dress getting some wear! It really does look great after alterations.

  11. (Just found your blog recently and I love it! You look so much taller and then I realize that you're my height, which made me feel so much better about myself, if that makes any sense at all...)

I love the belt loop trick! Very neat! And I guess I'll be donning on some Target dresses! I'm so happy that Target clothes have gotten way better than what they used to be.

  12. I remember this dress from your previous post last year. I love this look. It's very classic and so you. You look lovely with you headband. To answer your question on my post - Yes, I am wearing TLBC bra. Don't you love them? I do. They gave me the cleavage that I was craving for. Thanks for noticing :)

  13. I love the detailing of the dress so I'm glad you wore "plain" pumps with it. Let the dress shine! I'm going to have to steal the belt looping :)

  14. You look so pretty! I like how your dress matches the bedsheets. Did you purposely take the photos there? :P Wow, those tights are olive? I couldn't tell! Thought they were grey. Your earrings are so pretty and I love the simple makeup. : )

P.S. is that your room? SO pretty.

  15. @The Little Dust Princess: I thought the tights were grey too. I really need to get tights/pantyhose that aren't either "nude" or black/grey...any suggestions, PAG? I really like the dress! It's a nice alternative to all the reds, greens, silver/golds and LBDs we're seeing :)

  16. Oh man, my eyes totally lit up when I saw your dress! It is so pretty! I might have found some inspiration for my work party! Now the part is to sneak into your closet... and find a way to get your clothes to grow a size... :)

  17. I love dressing up for the holidays! Thanks for the dress ideas! :)

  18. Jean you look so beautiful! I love your accessories that you paired with this look! The bow headband is adorable-now I want to try for a girlier look :)

  19. Oh, what a fabulous dress! It's 'holiday' in such a chic and unexpected way. And I love how you paired a belt with it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Your earrings are the perfect complement to the paisley print. You look so put-together and classy, as usual :)

  21. I remember this dress and it works really well for this challenge! I love the details you added to it that makes it more interesting...the headband, the belt, and even the tights. Btw, your place looks great too! =)

  22. this dress is gorgeous on you and i'm in love with the print!! it's incredible to go back to the original fit and see how big it was on you. you have one great tailor and it was definitely worth the money!!

i need to invest in some olive tights still. i finally bought a pair of olive pumps from F21 when I saw that they had some in size 5 online for $15. they've been a really nice addition without looking too green. :)

your headband is super cute! love everything about this look!

  24. That is a beautiful dress and I love the accessories you wore with it!

  25. You look great Jean - far cry from holiday card - a very unique & unexpected look for the holidays - probably will stand out amidst all the sparkle and sequins. :)

I think I spot some R&R blush too? Pretty!!! Nice chill-in-the-air flush!

  26. I'm not a huge fan of paisley usually, but this print looks gorgeous on you! The belt loop is genius, I am definitely using that one.

  27. I am glad I am not the only one with shoe issues when it comes to styling a fancier dress. This looks great and I love the use of the tights. It's so hard to dress for winter weather here in New England and tights are way more practical. I tend to avoid tights for dressier looks, but maybe I can try that. And I am a sucker for paisley, so I would totally wear this. I fear prints (being petite makes it harder to wear large prints) but you look fantastic in this. I have to confess ever since I started reading your blog I have a lot more styling inspiration. And I have to share with you my latest Savers fin - a brand new faux fur collar exactly like yours from H&M.

  28. I love it! Don't think you need fancier shoes - the tone-on-tone thing elongates your legs. Extra points for winterizing a summery dress and for sharing the belt loop trick Enjoy your parties.

  29. I love the whole outfit, you look amazing! The dress is stunning and the tailoring job on it was very good. You look stunning!

Your blog is so inspiring, I love it :)

  30. Ahh, I so love that dress on you!! What a great idea to pull it out for the holidays, I never would have thought of that! Gold is so "in" right now too =D

    ReplyDelete
  31. you are beyond adorable! love the whole look on you! i don't have olive tights nor many "practical" shoes...i don't have any holiday parties, i suck...no one wants me at their parties, maybe i talk too much...oh wells

If I were to go to a party, it would be a gold dress, lots of gold and sparkly makeup. Nude platforms to not overdo it on the gold.

  32. The olive accents are fantastic with this dress! I love the pattern and fit on you and it seems like a dress that will take you through seasons!

  33. Oh you look adorable in this dress and the bow headband is so pretty ^_^ You are tempting me with those f21 tights. I like to wear by belts like that too. So cute!

    ReplyDelete
  34. this does not look like the easy way out at all! haha I would never thought of pairing olive belt and tights with that dress. This is one of my favorite outfit in this challenge! The accessories and shoes are perfect, otherwise it can get too over-the-top with fancier stuff. You have an eye for style, lady! I always love your posts!

  36. after seeing you don the headband, I think it's so perfect for a holiday party. Now, I'm going to consider working a headband into my outfit for my comp's holiday party.

  37. Love this look! The target dresses are really cute too!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I remember this dress! It's definitely holiday appropriate and the headband is darling too. I've been too scared to try colored tights, but I think it works really well to add interest, especially for the holidays!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Gorgeous!!! This is an amazing pattern!! I love that the accessorizing possibilities are nearly endless since there are so many colors in the dress...but it is not so overwhelming like some patterns can be.

Great accessories! I am regretting not ordering tights from Forever 21 when there was free shipping. :(

  40. gorgeous photos and outfit! =) but honestly i couldn't stop staring at your decor.. is that your apartment/bedroom???

  41. geez do you ever look bad in anything!? you look gorg!

  42. Thank you guys for all your lovely notes! I loved reading all the other entries for this challenge.

@Elle I have another one stashed away from H&M lol, will show soon : )

@curls-and-pearls Hahah I skipped the bumpit for these photos but I did wear it to work with the same headband! Lots of chatter from coworkers about my poof lol, which probably means I failed.

@Vicky J.crew 0P might fit you a little better, especially if it's a stretchier material and not silk!

@Alterations Needed Kelly, you will love olive. I like gray but light gray can make legs look "chalky." Olive is the solution!

@Thao Welcome! I think the photos are deceiving because depending on what angle they're taken from one can look quite short or tall : ) And I have to thank Anh for the belt loop trick!

@The Little Dust Princess Hehe my camera messed up the color, but I promise they are a dark green. And oh no it is not my tiny little apartment...I'm at my parents' house for Thanksgiving : )

@CynthiaC I've been looking at a number of colored tights (aside from black and gray) and I have to say none of them are too wearable except for olive. I'd love a pair of dark navy tights, so if you can find them, give it a shot! All the "navy" I've seen in stores though so far appear more blue than dark navy.

@kileen Ahh I just went to F21.com and found the pumps I think you're talking about, but they only have gray. Wish I saw those when they had free shipping! I forgot that they carried sz 5 online.

@Irene Wow, crazy good eye you have girl. It's a bit of R&R and a bit real chill-in-the-air...I think my parents keep that bedroom at 50 degrees in the winter. Was FRIGID!

@littlenashua More Savers fun? Sounds like an amazing find! I'm quite sad the one by me is a 30 minute drive with nothing else in the direction, hence the bf hardly ever wants to trek out that way. I did buy the savers calendar though to get my coupons all set for 2011. For someone who fears prints you did a great job making your dress for this challenge!

@Annapurna Thank you Annapurna...bundle up and stay warm this winter during your pregnancy : )

@J-ezzy LOL, please, I am sure you are the life of the parties. Enjoy your holiday relaxing : )

  43. @AubreyOhDang! I don't have this headband thing figured out...while at work it kept slipping down and I faced ridicule from the coworkers. I hate people with hair that holds!

@elleandish haha I wish, I live in a 550 sq foot apartment in Boston with minimal decor...that is a bedroom in my parents' house : )

@PetiteXXS Start with the 40 den ones at H&M and hopefully that will ease you into the F21 colored ones! The F21 $3.50 ones are very warm but they are all opaque.
