Hello readers - I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I did a quick video to share a look that I've been wearing recently on weekends. In this vid I am using a Stila smokey eye palette that was just $14 from Hautelook (thanks Christine for your coupon : D) and my fave new falsies gifted by DSK Steph. I loved the makeup in Jen of Frmheadtotoe's bra-fitting video, and felt inspired to do a version for myself.
Before and After:
Ah, the good ole "before" photo. Strangely enough, the more I dabble in makeup, the more comfortable I am with my bare face and liner-less eyes (not the case throughout HS and college, against my parents' rules). As I'm "aging" I try to remember that makeup should be used to enhance and not hide who you are : )
After watching this vid I didn't even want to share it on here, lol. I need lots more practice (uneven shadow, liner, lash glue smeared all over lids...awesome) but thankfully YouTubers provide a wealth of tutorials. My other favorites to watch are Stephielaclac and MszJackieChu - more beautiful girls who have very helpful tutorials.
I encourage anyone who is venturing into eyeshadow to try out taupe, brown, and gray tones. I always thought eyeshadow was "too much" for work, but these shades are subtle and wearable (as seen in my last lookbook post).
Products used, in order of application:
1. Mac select cover-up in NC 40
3. Rock & Republic Blush in Kinky
5. Stila Smokey Eye Palette (from Hautelook)
6. Shisem falsies gifted by the lovely DSK Steph
7. e.l.f. Essentials Lipstick in Classy
I picked up three of these $1 e.l.f. Essentials Lipsticks
Swatches: 1. Seductive, 2. Gipsy (berry pink), 3. Classy (medium pink with bluish undertones)
Thanks for reading, guys! If you have any favorite (affordable) beauty products or other beauty gurus that you like to watch, share below in the comments : )

Yes! I definitely use the $1 elf lipsticks every day too. They have a strange not-unpleasant smell that piques my interest every time I wear them. I really like Fantasy for its brown hues. I wore Classy to my research lab and felt like I looked too much because it is inside a hospital x_x
ReplyDeleteI think you look great! It's naturally enhanced beauty with visible makeup. Your natural bare face isn't bad at all but we all need a little pick-me-up in the mornings in the eye dept. You have it down pat :D
I think the look is soft and pretty on you. The ELF lipstick shade is not bad either. Didn't get to see you put on blush though... did you find a good brush for that? The one I have now isn't working too well for me... I think I want one with a flatter brush surface.
ReplyDeleteYou did so great! Love this video - very easy to follow :)
ReplyDeleteUmmm...how the heck did you manage to put on liquid liner with one hand?!? I always have to be super close to the mirror and I have to hold my eyelid with the other hand in the proper way so as to not get the liner all over the place! LOl! Great job!
awe jean! you look great! im like a total makeup noob, and i watched youtube, and tried it out and it still never looks right, haha FAIL! but you did a good job :) yay!
ReplyDeleteYou look lovely as always. I love the smokey look and natural color lipsticks. Those $1.00 lipsticks are the super nice. They look pretty awesome on you.
ReplyDeleteYour video is way too cute. I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteAnother easy eye shadow to try is olive green, and I LOVE eyeliners that color too. It's softer than black. Liquid is too strong for me. I use Mary Kay's eyeliner that is almost like a liquid but much easer to apply. I just went and bought Airy Fairy today to try after watching Jen's video. It looks ok on me, not as pretty as on Jen.
Beautiful makeup job and very informative video! I am so far behind on the makeup scene and definitely need to play catch-up as well. Thanks so much for the YT recommendations. I've always wanted to watch tutorials but there are so many makeup videos out there it's overwhelming for a newbie to pick a place to start.
ReplyDeleteI like the pink lipstick! I think I own about 7 pink l/s by different brands.. they're all the same haha but I'm compelled to keep buying them! I'm like you in that I just use a mishmash of cheap and dept store makeup.. but honestly I think it works fine and if someone was to look at our faces I doubt they'd be able to point out that we use $1 makeup!
ReplyDeleteNice video. Those elf lipsticks look nice. One of my favorite eyeliner is from palladio you can get it at nordstrom rack, easy to apply, looks nice and is very inexpensive.
ReplyDeletelovely vid!
ReplyDeleteI love your observation about the "mom look" that LOFT used to have...very true!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the youtube beauty tutorials by Michelle Phan? She was my intro into the youtube beauty tutorial world...great stuff!
Great final product! Those falsies look so good.
Also...thanks for "following" me so quickly!! I am so excited about the blog! :)
You look stunning. This smokey eyes are perfect for daytime look but enough to turn heads. I just experimented with smokey eyes this weekend as well and posted it on my blog. What a coincidence!
ReplyDeleteYou look great with and without makeup, but I will admit the 'with' photo has a little extra impact.
ReplyDeleteI tend to focus more on skincare than makeup (less to cover up, and my work sometimes requires me to shower mid-day and I'm too lazy usually to want to reapply after) but I'm a fan of Bare Minerals. Find it forgiving to apply, and while a thing of foundation is $25 it's just pure dry minerals so it never goes bad.
you look great without make up!! you look a lot younger without... :)
ReplyDeleteGeez can you be any more gorgeous? The tutorial and the make up are great!
ReplyDeleteAs an affordable brand, I love using L'oreal.
How fun a beauty video from you! You look amazing even without makeup! I always knew you were a natural beauty! I love Stephielaclac for sure and Jackie. I also love Holly's (hollyannaeree), Nee's channel (Bebexo), Becky's (MissBecky0207) and a couple hundred more! LOL! Wow, Steph gave you Shisem lashes? She must really like you since that is her holy grail of lashes. I bet you'd make a great DSK model.
ReplyDeleteHow pretty! :) I'm also finding that the more I play with my makeup, the more comfortable I am bare-faced. Strange, isn't it? :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout out! lol, my name is mentioned on extrapetite.com!!! *SMILES* =^_^=
ReplyDeleteDid you find the two little bottles of lash glue that came with the lashes? I had no idea they came with glue when I first got them, but the Korean lash maker does an excellent job hiding them within the packaging lol.
Aw thanks for the shout out girlie! I'm loving the look you created! I've definitely moved more towards the enhancing features side of using makeup too. I love the Shisem lashes! Steph also sent me a pair a long time ago & I wore them to death lol
ReplyDeleteI think natural, subtle colors suit you well, you look beautiful! It took me a long time (many many months) to put makeup on with ease.. but I loved every minute of practicing it :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I love it <3
ReplyDeletegotta get the naked palette jean!
ReplyDeletelol @ Stephie! I wish I was better at remembering where I take my lashes off at...I'm such a lazy hobo!
ReplyDeleteLove your look! I agree about being comfortable in your own skin.. or face. I was always wearing/sneaking makeup during highschool but now I feel more comfortable with my makeup-less face. However, I still love makeup though. You're right, it's all about enhancing your looks -not hiding them.
ReplyDeleteQuestion for you since you buy a lot of Theory. I just bought a white Theory blazer for 130, good deal or no (org. about $350). Unfortunately, there's no Theory outlets near where I live. I once bought a Theory suit for $10 (used) so the thought of paying full price...
ReplyDelete"Airy Fairy" is one of my favorite lipsticks! It it goes on so nicely and I like the candylike scent of Rimmel's lipstick. I found mine at Ulta but you found a pretty close dupe! On me it looks more nude than pink though.
ReplyDeleteOh and favorite Youtube gurus...man I have so many! Frmheadtotoe(thats how I found you), xteeener, raeview, itsjudytime, and oh geeze a handful more.
I'm also subscribed to the makeup guru vloggers you mentioned. However, I LOVE your tutorials. You've got great composure on camera, and your tutorials are immensely helpful to those of us inept at drawing faces. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteawww jean you look so pretty. the before isn't bad at all! haha i know what you mean by aging...even though we're in our 20s. i feel like i need to start buying anti aging stuff to prevent the wrinkles from coming.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I love your work outfit, very chic. Thanks for the tutorial, very useful. :)
ReplyDeleteI hardly ever wear makeup because it always takes me _forever_ in the mornings and I just value my sleep too much ;) But your tutorial is so simple and easy to follow. I can't believe the before and after took only a few steps! I'm definitely inspired to try now :)
ReplyDeleteJean! Now I want to go straight to Target after work and buy some ELF lippies. HAHA.
ReplyDeleteYou look great! You're so funny how you keep saying you don't know anything about make-up. I spent the summer before work watching a ton of YouTube videos. Check out xteeener. She uses a lot of drugstore products and is super down to earth. :)
That's a beautiful look, very soft and perfect for accenting what you already have.
ReplyDeleteHi Jean, you look great.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you; I'm a believer of less is more, especially when it comes to makeup. I feel that if makeup is very obvious, then it defeats the purpose. I believe the best makeup makes you look good in a subtle and natural way, so that people think it's you and not the makeup.
Some of my personal makeup discoveries, from lots of trial and error, include brown eyeliner, which looks more naural than black (black can look harsh and obvious sometimes), and very light shimmery taupe eye shadow, which give eyes beautiful definition in a subtle way.
I discovered Michelle Phan on YouTube recently and her videos are very good. I also like Carmindy on "What Not To Wear." I really love that show; I learned a lot from it.
Thanks for the tutorial and for turning me on to the other vloggers. I spent half the night watching make up videos and then googling circle lenses. I am totally out of touch. Dolly eyes?!
ReplyDeletei love this look!
ReplyDeletethanks for the vid for the look. i love the look from Jen in frmheadtotoe and wanted to try it but didn't know where to start. And i love the top!
ReplyDeleteAww such a cute video! You do a great job!

before = natural beauty. after = polished stunner. awesome job! I like taupe eyeshadows too. It looks deceiving in its packaging but it's surprisingly subtle and flattering on Asian skin tones.
ReplyDeleteI'm Em. I recently started blogging about small-sized clothes and shopping at tiny-in-nyc.com. Please check it out. Your feedback and suggestions are welcome! :)
Girl, you are a natural beauty for sure!!! despite this, LOVE the look you did with the smokey palette - I love how natural the look came out, even with the 'kinky' blush!
ReplyDeleteYou look great! I also love Jen's makeup tutorials, and I second xteeener on YouTube as well :)
ReplyDeleteBeen reading your blog for a while now and because your style is so classic, I'd love to see you in a simple eye + bold lip combo - perhaps a future post?
- J
my pleasure!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying this look. I have never used ELF but it's right in my price range! =P You look very nice with a pink lip.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I feel like makeup makes me more confident in myself that I CAN look good so when I don't get a chance to put it on I don't really mind being without it (if that makes any sense) lol
Check out pixiwoo on youtube- they are 2 sisters, but I prefer the older one with long hair.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the comments and tips, girls! I wish I had a better commenting system so I could easily respond to each of you. I am going to check out your recommended youtubers' and products.
ReplyDeletePetiteXXS - still no brush, which sucks because I apply way more color than I want at once. Let me know if you find a good (and affordable) one! And i recorded the first few steps but the sound didn't match up to the audio..bleh, waste of time.
Curls N Pearls - haha, it took a few weeks of practice. If you use a lighter hand and look down, you won't need to tug with your other hand : )
Amy - It's hard to say how much something is worth...but for Theory I've paid ranging from $50 to $200. I'd say everything is at least half off from retail or so I hope. I might not pay that much for a white blazer just because I don't know if I can keep it clean! Which reminds me...gotta send mine off to the dry cleaners now (more added cost, ick).
Kandice- hmm, I've never tried brown liner. And I think liquid mostly comes in black so I never saw the option!
Couture & Crayons - hahaaa, you're not the only one who is out of touch. When I first saw Dolly Eyes I was a little freaked out. Ginorm pink contact lens? lower and upper fake lashes?
J @ 11:20 - simple eye and bold lip...yikes lol! I've never tried bold lip with anything. I like Jen's bold red look but no way i can pull that off. What color do generally you like for doing a bold lip?
You look great, with or without makeup!

This is my first time visiting your blog! You are so cute in your video -- and pretty with/or without makeup!
ReplyDeletewhen i tried to watch the video. it says it is private :( and i cannot watch the video.
