Review: Gap "Premium Black Pants" - Slim Cropped in 00P

This summer, Gap introduced their "premium black pants" in 7 cuts, retailing from $49.50 - $59.50 (at least 40% less than their sister brand, Banana Republic). Intrigued, I ordered several styles to try on in size 00P. Gap does not offer petites in stores, so I had to get everything online.
Blouse: LOFT Ruffle Halter in XSP (love this!)
Belt & Shoes: Banana Republic
My favorite of the bunch, by far, were the slim crops. I'm a legging lover, so these were a welcome alternative for less casual outfits. They are comfy, like a cross between jeans and pants, and have nice trouser details like the tab waist and pockets. I've seen a lot of Gap employees wearing these, so I think it's safe to say they are a universal favorite.
Pros:
- Sturdy & stretchy 95% cotton/5% spandex material- Slimming & versatile cut
- Affordable (especially with Gap's frequent coupons & sales)
- Runs smaller than all their other pants

Cons:
- Extra room in the tush and thighs causes creases (on my body type, maybe better for curvier types). However, I have not washed these yet. Since the material is 95% cotton, they might shrink.
- Material is a lint magnet
- Waistband is a little big, yet the hips and thighs were snug
Measurements: 13.5" across the waist, 16.5" across the hips, 24" inseam, 7" rise

On Saturday I wore these with a simple tank and flats. The waist problem is fixed by a belt, but you can still see visible creasing in the back view.
Back:

Overall, I recommend these pants for those who are either my size or bigger. I'm interested in seeing how they look on fellow petites with different body types.

Side anecdote: When I went online to write a review for these pants, I did a double take:
Jean Lover...who are you, and can we be friends?

Readers - What do you think? Will you be trying on these pants?

  1. Hmm. Very interesting! I guess I will have to give it a go. I haven't been able to fit GAP pants, umm, ever?? But what concerns me about the crop pant is the inseam. It might fall at a really awkward length on me since my natural inseam in flats is almost at a full 31". They seem to be a great length for you though!

  2. Ohh they look great on you!!!

  3. It's so exciting that Gap/ON/BR are all shipping to Canada now! :D These pants look awesome. I love how you can dress it up or down.

  4. Yay good deal! And no altering, that's a plus!

I'm in love with the new Gap commercial ~ the models and jeans are so super skinny! My sister saw the new jeans in store and she said they run really tiny!

LOL at Jean lover.. little does she know that's a double entendre! If she were in SF I wouldn't be surprised, given that Gap is headquartered here and we have so many Asian girls.. but in Boston O_o?

  5. I really love your top from ann taylor loft. I've been trying to buy it but they sold out online the xxsP size and my stores do not haven't either on the P sizes. Tell me about the fit of the XSp...I might take the plug and order online after seeing on you.

My experience with Gap pants (mainly jeans which I love from them) is that I need to order always a couple to try them on (lol thanks to Luxe card..free shipping:))...their sizing is very inconsistent. So, is trial and error...but lately their skinny/leggings jeans have worked for me.

  6. Oh the gap pants looks great on you :) Love it.

  7. You look FAB in the first pic! I've always liked the look of cropped pants, but never on me. Now that these come in Petite sizes, I must give them another shot!

  8. Jean -- i love the 1st pic! i'm glad these worked out for you out of the bunch. i am definitely open to gap petites now :)

Old Navy has petite pants that I'm eye-ing. I wonder if they will fit too. Have you or anyone tried them before?

Thanks for the sweet comment btw. I am far from edgy!

  9. These fit you pretty well, but I see what you mean about a bit of bunching and creasing. Thinking about trying these on in store (non petites obviously) it might be a good comparaison to see how different the petite is from the regular.

  10. Awesome review ^^!! I'm not as small as you (5' but 105lb - I have bigger thighs and tush than you) and I love Gap jeans! <3 The cropped ones fit really well, especially this year's skinnies.

  11. Thanks for the review! The deal breaker for me when buying pants is the creasing in the back.

  12. I think you are hysterical with the "jean lover" lol!

I mean - you look fabulous! what more is there to say?! I love the top, too! I can't wait to get back to the U.S., get a real job, & dress cute for work!

  13. Oh, I like these pants! I wonder if you got these for free at the pant event, hehe. I didn't go myself.

  14. My Gap package STILL hasn't arrived yet... but I'm curious now how these will fit on me.. Given the waist gap on you I'm thinking it's probably not going to work out. And I have to say I think I'd almost prefer the pants to be slightly longer?

On the other hand, I'm so glad I got my hands on that LOFT ruffle halter! I totally missed out on the pretty AT ruffle tank that you and AN have so I'm happy I didn't miss the boat this time since the XXSP sold out fast!

  15. LOL. My post is on GAP pants too...tomorrow. But I'm reviewing the Perfect Trouser Pant. I was thinking of trying those, but since I have the Theory cropped pant, I'm not sure I need another one.

I think the cropped pants need to be a little longer...or they're just cropped at an awkward length.

  16. I wear petite tops, but my legs are too long for me to wear petite pants. Gap jeans used to fit me well, but recently they have been way too big in the waist for me. It's not just Gap, though - I'm suddenly having trouble finding any pants that aren't too big in the waist for me. I am thinking/hoping this has something to do with current styles and maybe eventually the old, better Gap fit will come back. I think the pants look nice on you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. They look really cute! I think because of the waist gap they probably wouldn't fit on me either.

  18. You look great! Super stunning :) xx

  19. thanks for the insightful review! i was waiting for your reviews to pop up because all the 00s have already disappeared from the shelves here in singapore dashing all my hopes of trying them. plucked up the courage and ordered the slim cropped and straight cut ones in 00P online and hope that they fit! i was actually hoping that the crooped pants would be a bit more cropped. you look really great in the halter top!

    ReplyDelete
  20. sorry, i meant '00P' instead of 'OOS'!

    ReplyDelete
  21. OMG, I was JUST at Gap today trying these on! I ended up buying 2 pairs of "jeggings" instead because of their sale... plus the smallest size the store had in stock was a 2P which DEFINITELY didn't fit me!

In reference to your comment on my blog -

The Ann Taylor store at the mall closest to my house carries all the petite sizes including 00P. I honestly thought all the Ann Taylor stores carried them... but may be only some do? The one at the mall near me is a larger store so may be that's why? I'm not sure! (In fact, oddly enough, even the GAP store at the mall near my house carries the 00P size... that's the size I bought both my "jeggings" in. That's SO strange that all the stores don't carry it! Never knew that!)

And as per my measurements (OMG this is embarassing!) - my waist is 21.5-22" and the largest part of my hips is about 26", give or take half an inch.

  22. Hi Jean,

Let me just say I love love love ur blog =)! Sorry to go off topic here, but the cold draws near and I am hoping to snag my first(and hopefully not the last ;p) burberry coat for my birthday next month, thanks to your awesome reviews =)! I was wondering if you could explain in some detail as to what the difference between the cashmere trenches vs the cashmere coats at burberry might be? I come from a super warm country, so I want to make a good choice, I am just not that well acquainted with brands and am a fresh graduate so would really appreciate any advice to help in using my grad life savings in a constructive way! Thanks!

    -Very Confused =(

  23. Lol @ the Gap comment - I giggled at the name thinking it was you, but it was written by someone else who sounds just like you! Haha.

I like the side view of the pants, but not feeling the creases in the back.. hm.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Aww shucks. If they're a smidge too big on you, they won't work for me. =(

They look great on you with heels, and hopefully after a wash they'll take up that tiny bit you need them to.

LOL to Jean Lover. I wonder if she's a reader of our blogs...and if she's not, she should!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You look great with these pants! The smidge of room doesn't look distracting at all. In fact, I'm sure it's only to enhance comfort. They fit so great on you without alterations. That's saying something! :) Oh, and the Ann Taylor top is just so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  26. These look at least slimmer than a lot of other bottoms you've tried and reviewed in the past. The back doesn't look that distracting but I'm sure up close you just want to keep smoothing out the wrinkles. The tiny bit of extra space is for expansion room for PV work after hitting the Chinese buffet xD

Worst pet peeve: lint magnets! I have a big shedding golden retriever too so anything dark I wear turns salt and pepper in an instant haha.

Thank you for your comment :D Yes, us poor Mac users have to deal with Blogger not showing love to our photos. At least all my swatches will be colour true for you from now on xD

    ReplyDelete
  27. The pants look and fit great! I like how the length of the leg isn't too long either. I'm definitely going to have to go in and try on a pair for myself. I could always use more dress pants for work!

    ReplyDelete
  28. They don't look bad on you at all. We want everything to be a perfect fit and sometimes it's hard to achive. I have to try it on me andn see how they look. Great review as always!

    ReplyDelete
  29. These sound great!! I actually depise pants shopping just because I know I will never find a pair that will fit perfectly but these sound close enough =) They suit you perfectly and have a nice shape, unlike most jeans which don't hug a petite in the right places at all!

    ReplyDelete
  30. ch3r - they will probably look better on you with your 31" inseam, like they do on the model.

Jessy - I saw that! I hope they offer a full selection though, with petites and all.

Claud - what are your measurements? I wear a 32A, have 24-25 inch waist, and the top is no doubt, flowy. But it's do-able...I've worn this 3 times already. An xxsP would've fit much better. Since the sides are straight up and down, I'm thinking about taking it in a little myself. You should try on the XSP with the next sale they have (if it's still left)!

Ping - never noticed Old Navy petite pants. Reviews used to say their petites stuff ran big, but if you do order you'll have to let us know!

Chung - everyone loves their skinnies this year! And their jeggings lol.

Sephanie - by the time I shoved my way through, the smallest size they had left was like a 16. I claimed it anyways then returned it for store credit to get the right size : )

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lady Cardigan - have you tried their jeans this season though in petite sizing? I've seen the skinnies reviewed by Ping at allaboutfashionstuff.com and also have read reviews on their jeggings and it looks like the styles run pretty small in the waist.

metta - There are petites in store in Singapore? You're kidding! (though it would make sense b/c there are more petite ladies in Asia). Oh Gap why do you do this to me...
Oh, and the straight cut ones were a big flop on me. I don't know your body type but I hope you have better luck!

Aradhana - omg, please tell me what city do you live in? I'm seriously shocked...here I am providing false info saying Gap doesn't carry any petites in stores (that's what the sales people always tell me!) and Ann Taylor says the same about 00P. I'm so envious. Also your measurements sound unusual, did you measure them from pants you own, or with a measuring tape on the body? I measure 33 inches around the hips (hopefully not a whole 7 inches bigger than you there?) but I imagine I'd look similar in 00P pants by Ann Taylor.

Anonymous@1:42 AM...hi there! Hmm, I'm not familiar with cashmere trenches. I know they have cashmere-wool blend winter coats that are structured just like belted trenches though. If you want, you can email me via the "about" page and we can chat more! We need to make sure your money goes well spent : ) Also even though it's your bday next month, you might want to hold out for their winter sale which starts right in the beginning of January.

AN - it's a rare day when something I review may be suitable for the tinies like you : ) I'll let you know if they shrink beyond belief tho. Then you can have this pair, lol!

  32. I recently bought the modern boot pant and from the quick try on I did before leaving town, I liked them. I am for size purposes about a 4 but I do have hips, thighs, and a butt. So my biggest issue is my thighs and they seem to fit ok around that area but still a little snug. I will have to let you know when I post pictures of it so you can see them. Overall I am satisfied.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oooo....these pants look great on you! I think it's fairly obvious that the waist is big on you especially from the side profile but I still love how you wore it!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow, cropped jeans is a really difficult piece for me. For some reason the fit will just flare at the ankles so I my fix would be to roll them up. I shall look into Gap at some point and try these on myself. and LOL at Jean Lover! Perhaps you have an alter ego??!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Jean,

Thank you for the information about the XSP loft top. My measurements at about the same as yours, 32A and have 23-24 inch waist. oh I wish we can go shopping together. I'm also curious which city gap and ann taylor carried petites. Mine does not, I always have to order online.

    ReplyDelete
  36. HAHA! I love that you found a friend in the reviews online :) Those are definitely cute pants and they look great overall, but I'm glad you pointed out the little flaws too. It definitely helps me with what to look for when I go shopping :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like you in those GAP jeans but I personally love how Allison Izu's jeans flatter your petite figure far better.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Those trousers look great on you! :)

Unfortunately I'm not able to find petite sizes for the premium trousers range online or in store in GAP stores in the United Kingdom and I've even sent an email to customer services asking when they'd be available but unfortunately they said not at the moment so im left to admire them from afar :(

    ReplyDelete
  39. those pants look great on you, as does everything you wear! seriously girl, do you ever have a bad fashion moment? that ruffled top is so cute too, i have a ruffled top too but it makes me look like a turkey :P

    ReplyDelete
  40. is it just me? I have to say these look awkwardly short on you. It hits you right at the top of ankles, doing your legs no favors. I think the pants needs to be 1 inch longer, and if you wash it these may get shorter.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I like these pants on you! Esp. when you paired it with your heeled shoes/wedges? :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. A little off topic.. but for whatever reason I saw the ruffle top on LOFT's website today in petite XXS! I saw it last night with petite XS only. I couldn't believe my eyes! But now both the XXS/XS size disappeared.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I've been SO curious about these! I'm going to see if I can try on the regular sizing though and just wear them as skinnies instead of 'cropped' but we'll see. The jeggings are also intriguing as well! Thanks for the review Jean! <3 <3 <3! :D

    ReplyDelete
  44. You look great in these pants as usual, I'll have to try them out. Have you tried the JCrew Minnie pants? they look similar. I own a pair and I LOOOOVE them. I'm 5ft but curvier and they're very flattering.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Great detail on your review! I was all stoked up to try these, but then you mentioned that they are a lint magnet which would be a big problem for me since I have a long haired cat.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anon @ 9:06 - nope, not yet, but Jen frmheadtotoe gave me the measurements of sz 00P twill minnie pants and they are nearly identical to these in size! I hope they fit better in the bum, though!

prosephina - wow, you have to be quick. I know they re-stock online when returns come in, but those are probably snatched up in a flash.

Anon @ 4:11PM - I think they need to be either a little longer, or a little shorter. I may not dry them in the wash because the thighs are already so fitted! I agree right now they hit awkwardly, but it doesn't bother me too much...I have a couple of pairs of ankle pants at almost the same length.

Stylishly Petite - I'm interested in seeing how they fit on you!

Anonymous @ 2:09 - darn the no international shipping, but don't UK sizes run pretty small? Seems like your UK6 fits almost like a 00 here, and a UK4 is extra tiny!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I took a measuring tape and measured around my stomach/hips... I'm going to the tailor tomorrow to get things altered! I'll ask him to give me my measurements again and let you know for sure!

And I live in Pittsburgh; Boston for the fall/winter/spring. The Boston stores I've been to don't carry the sizes, but the Pittsburgh stores definitely do. I even drove out to a different mall today to make sure it wasn't just my mall; the 2 Ann Taylors I checked really do carry petites! The Gap store at the other mall however, didn't have petite sizes in every item, but it did in some of the pants.

You would think stores would be more consistent... so strange!

If you look on the Ann Taylor website, they have a "store locator" thing that you can click on and it'll tell you if the stores near you carry petites. Not all of them do, but if the store does carry it, it'll tell you online. [: May be you already knew that but I thought I'd share in case you didn't!

    ReplyDelete
  48. You look good in the 1st pic (both top and pants). I'm rounder than you so those pants would probably give me muffin top and the thighs would make me look like a sausage (I run hence thicker thighs and am a mom so cannot seem to rid of tummy bulge).
I recently came back from a short trip to Vancouver Island and saw that Burberry trench that you returned (because of the awful material). I understand now why you didn't like it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Haha you and Jean Lover! I like it when you wear it with a tank top tugged in. The creasing doesn't bother me

    ReplyDelete
  50. I heard a lot of good reviews about this new premium pants line. And you just sold these pants to me! I love how they're ankle-length and not super low rise. Perfect for work! I must hunt these down :D

  51. I think they look super cute on you from the front and side views.

These remind me of the (pricier) J.Crew Minnie Pants (which I wear all the time) so I'm hoping they'll be a good alternative. Will have to try them out with the Gap F&F sale going on now!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I bought these similar pants at Gap Outlet for $20 bucks and love , love them! I am 5'0" and 96 lbs. so the size 1 fit me perfectly and they stretch alittle as you wear them. They make you look so slim and the cut is perfect for us petites.

  53. Jean,

You look great (you always do) but I am not loving these pants on you. Something about the proportion is off to my untrained eye. They don't elongate your leg and the crop hits you a little weirdly at the ankle.

I think you might like JCrew's bistretch wool minnies - I am 5-2, 97 pounds (but bigger than you as I normally wear size 0 and PXS (not 00P or PXXS). For example, while the H$M tiered skirt in size 4 is big on you, it fits me perfectly. Anyway, I got the Minnies in P0for around $60 with a coupon and a code and they are dreamy. I think the P00 would look awesome on you. The twill ones are nice and are often on sale.

I haven't had much luck with GAP pants (they don't wash&wear well). I tried 0 in-store yesterday and they were HUGE not to mention stupidly long. Ordered some of the petite stuff online (in 0P) in the hope that the "premium" line is better quality than their normal pants.

  54. Anon - oh I had no idea they made size "1" ? I'm so glad you found them for cheap : )

Anu - the more I read these comments (and thank you for the feedback btw, that is the reason why I post!) the more I agree with you. These are not great for elongating. I would love to try the minnie bi stretch but I never see them on sale! And when when wehn is there a coupon? Can you please let me know the next time you see them on sale online or come across public coupons? My friend gave me the measurements of a 00P and they measure almost exactly like these, so I'm dying to try on a pair but don't want to pay full price.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The minnie bi-stretch are new - so they won't be on sale yet - but I bet Jcrew will do 20% off pants soon (every week it is 20% off a different item).

I will give you a heads up when there is a coupon.
http://jcrewaficionada.blogspot.com/ has codes all the time as well.

The trick with Jcrew is to order and try the size when it is full price (or 20% off), see if you like or love it. Then, you decide whether you need to keep it at that price or not. Then, you need to stalk it when it is on sale or final sale - and Jcrew has a 30% final sale + free shipping - because you already know it will work for you, you don't have to worry about buyer's remorse and you get it at a a ridiculously low price. Plus, if you buy it on the "redphone" at a store, it is free shipping anyway.

I got a thinsulate-lined lady day coat for something like $80 by doing this and twill minnies for $38.

  56. (This is an FYI for Kelly @ AN too)

I called the Gap in Fashion Valley in San Diego, and they told me the same thing. No GAP carries petites, only their online store. Lies?! I d k. Guess I won't be adding GAP to AN's forum for San Diego.

  57. Even though I'm only 95 lbs, I'm way too curvy for tapered pants. I end up looking like a teapot.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I am 5'2, 95 lbs. I fit a 00R just fine. The inseam of the regular was 27 inches vs. 25 inches for the 00p, so it was ankle length just like yours. I am glad either size would work...crop or ankle.
