Skirt: Urban Outfitters sz XS (buy it here)
Boyfriend blazer: H&M divided, sz 2
Shoes: Aldo sz 36
Belt: J.Crew sz S
After much deliberation, my pickiness about fit won over. Anyone see something funky about the below pics?
If you guessed that the back fits all wrong, then you're right (but I'm sure no one guessed nor cared...I'm just a fit fanatic lol). Blazers (even cheap $30 ones) should have either contoured seams along the back AND/OR a back vent down the middle. The back on this jacket is completely flat, and no one's back is flat! Hence it is all bunchy at the back waist - sadly a no-go for me. Curls & Pearls got this jacket too so check it out on her.
Too bad about the fit ... the inside is real pretty!
On another note, thank you all so much for your feedback on my last idea. With your encouragement I'm going to start the challenges, but I'd love it if fellow bloggers volunteered to host future ones. I'm kicking off the Petite Fashion Challenges with...
PFC # 1 - "Do a Petite Don't"
The Challenge:Create an outfit for weekend brunch with your girlfriends. The outfit must include one garment that is typically notorious for being a petite "don't." Such garments include: dresses, skirts, or pants that hit at the scary mid-calf length (not cute, cuffed jeans...I'm talking real capris) or below the knee, maxi dresses, full A-lined skirts, or wide-legged pants.
If this is too much of a challenge for you, you can take the easy route too with stuff like horizontal stripes, huge prints, or a gigantic belt, or oversized items. But I'd really love to see you guys push yourselves out of the box. I know I'll be challenged! I have no idea about what to post!
My thought process for this one is that I've never liked the rigid "do or don't" fashion rules that you see in magazines and such. I think that many of the above items MAY work on petites if done carefully (or they just may not work period, we'll have to see!), and I'm looking forward to seeing how you guys incorporate them into your outfits.
How to participate:
1. Leave me a comment here letting me know if you're going to participate.
2. Schedule your post in 2 weeks for the evening of Thurs, August 26th. I'll post mine Thursday at midnight eastern time and link to all your blogs.
3. Include the "PFC" button above when you post the outfit and link back here.
For those of you who don't have a blog but want to join in on the fun, email me your pic or open a blogger account! I can't wait to see all of these in two weeks : )

Don't worry, I also noticed the funky back fit right away! That's a definite no-no for me because I need the back definition to help create a bottom curve... otherwise I'd be flat up and down in the back! Did you end up keeping the skirt though? I returned mine.
ReplyDeleteThat blazer's cute! Too bad about the fit. :( I think there's a bit too much nude going on there, but you wear it well.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting challenge! I'm interested, but don't sign me up yet. I have to brainstorm first. :P
I think you should keep them! This outfit is so feminine and cute! I love the belt around your waist. It accentuates your teeny tiny perfectly small waist! LUCKY! Hehehe! Ohh I love your white nail polish! Your nails always look so pretty in your YouTube videos by the way!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the jacket still looks GREAt on you! I know you like a perfect fit, but I think this jacket looks fantastic on you!
Oh boy! Gotta start looking through my closet!
ReplyDeletePS - Of course I saw the bad fit in the back of that blazer! =)
I would have returned it too...that would have driven me nuts.
Oh how fun!!! I will let you know for sure if I'm in or out very soon. I have to check the innards of my closet for these items :)
ReplyDeleteToo bad about the blazer! The skirt is a bit too girly for me, but you look great in anything as usual!
ReplyDeleteAHH! Yay, this is such a good one! I'm totally excited cause I thought of a fantastic thing that I read petites shouldn't do!
ReplyDelete[:
Do we have to state what we're doing so everyone doesn't do the same thing?... Or, how does this work?
I noticed the back of the blazer, too bad it doesn't fit because the color looks pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI'm up for the challenge and I have a few ideas in mind.
I would love to host a challenge on my blog - I am still not employed so I have plenty of free time on my hands.
ReplyDeleteJust one clarification - is our goal to create a fashion don't that is bad, or is our goal to take something that is traditionally a don't and figure out a way to style it so that it is no longer a don't?
I'm totally in!
ReplyDeleteLOL - funny I'm wearing that blazer today - it's the only thing I decided to keep despite the lack of back vent.
I need clarification too - should we be taking a normally petite don't element and trying to make it work with other wardrobe elements?
This challenge is timely - I got invited to brunch this weekend :P
your boyfriend blazer, gosh, I've been eyeing for a blazer in that color for weeks now.
ReplyDeletepretty blazer! too bad the fit isn't good

I actually love your outfit...KEEP IT. It looks really good on you! Heck, I am thinking about getting the exact same outfit (too bad the skirt is sold out in smaller sizes)
ReplyDeleteAnd sign me up for the challenge, I have so many petite no-no pieces.
I'm definitely interested in participating! Does the outfit have to look BAD on us?
ReplyDeleteI already returned both, just wanst meant to be : )
ReplyDeleteKerry / Cynthia / Curls - whoops!! Sorry I was so very unclear. I was hoping to see us make these pieces WORK (if it is possible) knowing all the tips and tricks and rules of "balance" that we do. That'd be silly of me to ask you guys to post an outfit looking completely bad : ) Sorry for the confusion, I added some clarification up top!
Aradhana - nope, no need to share : ) We like surprises!
Too bad about the lack of the slit. You didn't think of possibly getting it altered? In principle, I really like the outfit though. Love the nude/neutral colored theme of it.
ReplyDeleteI've got a ton of petite don't items in my closet. But it's going to be a challenge to see if I can make it all work... Definitely still new to this petite fashion area. But looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!
Yes, Agree with you on the jacket. Not good in the back. I noticed that you are wearing Aldo shoes size 36. Do you always have to go up half a size for Aldo shoes?
ReplyDeleteI will try to come up with something for your challenge. It's a tough one. :)
Jean, I would love to participate! Anywho, I love the outfit even though I did see that the back is flat but nonetheless, you should add necklaces like she does and I think it'll be cute or wear the pieces separately! Love the colors too!
ReplyDeletethat's so strange about the blazer, and such a shame because otherwise that outfit would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteToo bad the back doesn't really fit. BUT the front looks great :D And it goes SO WELL with the lace panel skirt ;) I love those patent nude pumps. They really elongate the legs. But I have a love-hate relationship with patent shoes. They ALWAYS give me blisters and 1 blister is enough to keep myself away from them :(
ReplyDeleteThe Petite Challenge sounds great! Too bad I can't join BUT I can't wait to see all entries :)

Oh love the skirt and too bad about the blazer. did you try it with jeans or shorts? sometimes it looks diff/better with other garments. Other than work, i like my blazers kinda loose with a more relaxed fit. Do you still have it, I'll buy it from you... jk.. anyhow. regarding the challenge I would like to participate, I do all those don'ts on a regular basis, but this should be fun. And that "jungle" is at a random park in Quincy. Quincy itself is kinda like a jungle...
ReplyDeleteloving this neutral look!!! So classy xo
ReplyDeleteJean-- i love the outfit...maybe its hard to really see in pictures, but I think it looks fine. But I can see why you don't like it because of the back. I don't think I'd have noticed.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm down for the challenge.
I love the outfit..but would be even better if the blazer is a size smaller..
ReplyDeleteSo I'm a little torn about that blazer. I do agree with you, there is sad deflating crumble where a curvature should be. However, my experience is that I kind of have a butt, so I don't like that area too defined. I actually still get the blazer for myself. (omg, if I can find it that is, thank you random organized H&M)
ReplyDeleteI LOOVE the pairing though! I got that skirt from UO because of you and PetiteXXS reviews awhile back. I was thinking about pairing it with an oversized long sweater and have it peek out underneath. I never thought about pairing it with a blazer! I have got to give this outfit a try.
Oh whoops, with all of my enthusiasm I forgot to mention that I was going to participate in the PFC! Sorry for posting twice!
ReplyDeletei've always wanted a blazer like yours but in black;D I just haven't found the perfect one though. But i'm really likingo the way you combined everything in this ensemble!
ReplyDeletei am now your newest follower. come and check out my blog. and maybe follow me too? thank you!

good eye on the fit of the back!
ReplyDeleteI would return both items too if I was you. You have put together many fabulous outfits. This one is not one of them. The blazer didn't fit you right. As for the petite fashion challenge, I'll join. I have no idea what I am going to do yet but I'll take the challenge :) Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteIt does sound challenging but I am in! I have many "don't items".
ReplyDeleteI noticed a lot of Ann Taylor stuff in your blog. Check out how they photoshop the model pics making it near-impossible for petite women to imagine how their clothes would fit us:
ReplyDeletehttp://photoshopdisasters.blogspot.com/2010/08/ann-taylor-ann-failure.html
I'm going to participate! And I also noticed the bad back fit. Darts are much needed!! :)
ReplyDeletethe lining is pretty on that blazer! it's a shame that it didn't fit that way too. and I absolutely love that lace skirt! you look so chic and sophisticated in that outfit :)
ReplyDeleteaww this outfit looks cute on you! i got a bf blazer from h&m the other day too on sale for $20 and it's so pretty. however the fit is funky because the sleeves are too long but ionno. i'll have to take pics and have you help me decide all the things that are wrong with it xD
ReplyDeletei have lots of clothes that qualify for petite no-no's" but idk sometimes it's borderline all right since i'm barely a petite. my legs are really strange though in that i have really shirt lower legs. actually rompers looks icky on me and make me look short. maybe i'll do a disproving these myths posts who knows? these challenges are so fun!
I'm in!
ReplyDeleteToo bad on the fit, I liked the coral colours.
Jean: I also have an idea for the future challenge. How do I propose it? Do I email it to you? I am all fired up today!
ReplyDeleteaw it's so cute :) so did you return the jacket but keep the skirt? following my own sjp advice, i bought this lace skirt from target in blush. i think i have that exact same belt from jcrew! i can't wait to see all the petite don'ts!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.target.com/Xhilaration-Juniors-Lace-Skirt-Blush/dp/B003OQYXH8/ref=br_1_17?ie=UTF8&id=Xhilaration%20Juniors%20Lace%20Skirt%20Blush&node=13828451&searchSize=30&searchView=grid3&searchPage=1&sr=1-17&qid=1281710647&rh=&searchBinNameList=style_name%2Clifestyle-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&searchRank=salesrank&frombrowse=1
I'm excited about this challenge. Count me in :).
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing but yea once I saw the picture of the back, it did look well "lifeless". Hehehe. but nevertheless you still look amazing. :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the challenge, can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. :D
I agree with you, that blazer is a really gorgeous shade but a fit like that doesn't warrant keeping it, although the price is right. Hope you continue on your quest for a blush blazer and find one that fits you like a glove.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you specialized petite fashion bloggers come up with for the challenge!
Happy Friday!
Jen
i think this is one of my favorite outfits! i love the monochromatic look:) omgosh, how did i miss this blazer at H&M??? this is the exact color i've been searching for! i'm sorry to hear about the back, but i think it still looks great on u! it's not too noticeable at all. what a fun challenge! im looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with:) i'm a huge fan of wide leg pants and as a fellow petite, i know it's a big no-no lol, but they're so darn comfy! haha! have a great weekend!

=) I am all smiles. You didn't have to. What I want most is for all ladies to help share secrets because beauty is endless. There are particular people who will refuse to let you in, thinking that their beauty will fade if they tell you, but I think otherwise!
ReplyDeletethe blazer looks great on you!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited I found about this petite community, because goodness knows I need help in clothes. I'm probably one of those people who should be put on those what-not-to-wear shows. But I'm trying to self-improve! So count me in on the challenge! I actually have this outfit I just bought and not sure if it's right for me, so I need advice, so I'll be posting that for the challenge. ps. I like the jacket color on you, if not fit :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in! I have a few items in mind already.... I don't have a blog (yet), so I'll be sending you the photos.
ReplyDeleteHi Jean! Just snapped some pics for the challenge, so I'm in! Thank you for this fun idea :D
ReplyDeleteWhoo! I almost missed it!! I'm glad I came back to see how soon the deadline was coming up...Definitely in!
ReplyDeleteI'm in! Actually, I think I'll enter a pic with both me and my sister (although she doesn't have a blog) if that's alright!
