Petite Lookbook: Pretty in Pewter

I've been wanting to try Ann Taylor's "Tropical Wool" pencil skirts, but the $108 price tag scared me. They also don't carry 00Ps in store anymore (unlike BR), and I never felt compelled enough to order online. During their 40% off sale last week, I wandered into a store and lo and behold there was a 00P hanging on a rack, in a color that I've been loving this season!
Tee: H&M sz XS
Skirt: Ann Taylor Tropical Wool Pencil Skirt in Soft Pewter, 00P
Shoes: Ann Taylor Exotic Pump in 5.5 - on sale again!
Pearls: eBay

While I was in the store, I also couldn't help but try on this cute swing jacket in a matching fabric. They had it in 0P only, but I was surprised by the slim fit. I think a 00P would actually be perfect on someone my size for wearing over dark denim or black suit pants. It's currently on sale here for $112.50 from $228, and still left in 00P!
I also tried this jacket on with the matching skirt, but it was hideous pewter overload. I will spare readers from the pics.

The fit of the skirt in 00P is not perfect. As you can see below, on an empty stomach there is an inch or so of fabric to spare at the waist band. The hips are also not snug on me. However, this is the best fit I've come across right off the rack in a long time for pencil skirts...the silhouette is actually a true pencil (my biggest qualm with BR skirts) with the entire skirt tapering down at the knees.

I'm going to hold off on alterations, because my waist expands after each meal and actually fills out the skirt - scary.
Another concern I had was about the quality of the "Tropical wool." I loathe wrinkles, and sure didn't want to pay $65 for a skirt that crumples up after a few sittings. In a previous post, a reader (Vix) mentioned that "one sign of a good wool is that [the wrinkles] fall right out after an overnight hang." I put this skirt to the test, and wore it for a couple of hours in my hotel room - sitting, lying down, rolling around, etc. It got a few wrinklies, so I hung it up in the closet. The next day ... voila ... looked normal again. Satisfied, I then removed the tag and wore it to work. These photos were taken after I wore the skirt for 12 hours (sitting) then stuffed it into a suitcase.

  1. That's a gorgeous pencil skirt. I bought one way back, and even though I love the fit, it wrinkles very easily :(.

  4. So pretty on - if only I could wear pencil skirts to work! Pewter is a unique color choice and it looks perfect for Spring - matches perfectly with pastels :)

  5. I definitely agree with you about the "true" pencil skirt silhouette. I bought a dark grey AT skirt last year, and it's still the best fitting pencil skirt I own. My BR size OP ones bunch too much around the butt and rise up ridiculously when I walk to work. I love how the AT cinches perfectly at the waist and hits right above the knee, without rising up when walking or sitting.

  7. I hate eating things in a pencil skirt though. I feel like I'll burst the skirt open into shreds!
But I love the colors and the line it gives<3 Very pretty~ ^___^

+1 for your lovely smile ^__~

    XOXO

  8. So lucky to find the 00P in store! I always check the AT racks for 00P or XXSP returns and I never find anything. =(

So glad to hear they fit nice, and the wool is of decent quality.

aspiringminimalist - maybe they've changed their fabrics since you last bought them?

  9. you are so pretty! love the oufit, and that second jacket you tried on...lol, is that a giant pillow in the background? :)

  10. This looks great - I used to avoid pencil skirts or anything that covered my waist because I hate the tight feeling after a meal. For the last 10 year I only wore skirts that were more than likely too big for me, as they always hung around my hips.

After seeing how great you look in pencil style skirts and seeking advice on the AN forum, I decided to make one for my job interview outfit since it would look better with a jacket. Now it's my favorite one and I find myself wanting to make another out of some gray wool flannel.

  11. Is there a giant smooshie pillow in front of your door? :)

I love the Pewter pencil skirt on you-and how the shoes match your tee! This is a great looking outfit!

One of my qualms about Ann Taylor? No international shipping=no shoes for me...*sigh*

  15. I love that first outfit photo- such a pretty soft color palette. It looks so understated and elegant. And the pearls are a perfect accent.

You know I picked up that exact jacket when I was in Ann Taylor a couple days ago. It is a really cute jacket.

And there are your snakeskin perfect pumps. Those are gorgeous! :)

  17. I really love pale-colored wools in warm weather seasons and since you already have the perfect shoes for it, fate clearly wanted you to have that skirt without having to work for it...and at a good price to boot!

Love the 1st pic and probably would have died of happiness with the "pewter overload" jacket added, ha.

Glad to hear my tip about how to check on wool quality helped, and am amazed at how good that skirt looks after 12 hours sitting + a suitcase ride.

ps Are you thinking you'll leave it that length? I know above-the-knee is almost always better when petite, but FWIW I think that particular length with that skirt looks great on you...very elegant.

  22. Wow, that skirt looks fabulous on you, esp combined with your H&M top!!!! LOL at rolling around, that's so me. I wanted to get the shoes, but I wasn't sure about the comfort, I'm pretty sure you've already mentioned the comfort and I've already forgotten...I blame my brain the size of a gnat...haha

  23. I stopped by the sale and bought sunglasses (not on sale). I remembered your blog about the AT pumps and checked them out, but sadly none in size 5 or 5.5!

  24. nice outfit! great find at your ann taylor store. i almost never see any 00P, usually only 0P. but i really do love pencil skirts! they are professional and feminine .. and easier to maintain than pants.

  25. Looks great but... what`s with that giant pillow!? I have been wondering about that for a while!

  26. Thanks everyone! You guys are so sweet.

Vix - keepin the length...I haven't visited my tailor in months, and can't compel myself to spend the extra money on something that I can get away without : )

Sunny - it sucks! nothing less than a 6, 6.5 at some stores.

As for the pillow - lol, it's been in almost every lookbook post so I'm amused by all the questions this time around. It's my giant Lovesac rocking chair for napping. I push it into that corner to block the horrid mess of shoes and recycling, plus empty shipping boxes from online shopping.

  28. I'm surprised that the pewter actually looks quite flattering on your skin tone! I always figured such a shade was beyond my reach, but maybe I'll have to give pewter another try.

I love the side ruffle on it. and those shoes are to die for! love the python print and round toe. they look comfy too!
